Did you know it's the second baby season of the year for Eastern Grey Squirrels?

Squirrels have their litters around March/April, and again in August/September. That means the squirrels calls have picked up again! So what do you do when you find baby squirrels that are too young to be on their own? The visual below has very helpful information to answer that very question.

Most of the time, it is possible to reunite with the parents. If the babies are sick or injured, or parents do not get the babies after attempting to reunite, they need to get to a certified wildlife rehabilitation center. Remember, it is illegal to raise wildlife, so do not feed the babies anything. Keep in a warm, quiet place until you are able to find a rehabber for them!
To find a local wildlife center, please visit www.PAWR.com.

Mabel is still available for adoption!

Mabel was most likely abandoned and was on the run in the wild for at least 5 days before she was able to be captured. She had many ticks around her neck and ears and wounds from ones that had already fallen off. Luckily, she was otherwise okay. She received a wound healing spray to help the wounds from the ticks and everything cleared up well. Mabel will need sometime to warm up to a new person. We believe she has a hard trying to trust people after what happened to her. She still will come up to us and is friendly, but if she doesn’t like something, she will let you know. We hope to find someone who will be patient with her and give her the space and love she needs. Mabel is approx 2 years old.

If you are interested in adopting Mabel, please fill out the adoption application on our website: https://www.orcarescue.org/adoptable-pets

⚠️Some may find photos below disturbing⚠️

Zura’s story.

On July 25th, we got a call about a cat with a piece of metal in her face. The caller had taken care of her and other cats so they knew this cat well. Luckily she was used to people and they were able to get her quickly. Once she was contained, we went out to get her right away cause we knew she needed treatment for whatever was going on. There was potential of this being done on purpose but we didn’t know for sure… yet. She was safely picked up by Libby and she took her to Red Rose Pet Care Center.

Dr Shah first sedated her and took an X-ray to see what we were dealing with. The results of that are below. An arrow, clear as day, was in her cheek. We couldn’t believe it, cause she had even eating that morning! Dr Shah quickly made a plan on how to safely remove the arrow. Somehow, it had already missed her major arteries, jaw and trachea, so he needed to be careful. He was able to make a small incision and pull the arrow out the way it was facing. It came out clean and caused no damage, other then the wound to pull it out. It still sounds unbelievable, but we are so thankful she is okay, thanks to Dr Shah and his wonderful vet techs.

She was named Zura, which means “strength”. Zura has been recovering at our office and has been doing so well. Her wounds are almost healed! That being said, we hope to find who did this to her. This incident happened around the 100 block of West Willow Road. The day of her surgery, we reported this to Pequea Township Police Department. If anyone has any information, please contact them with any details you may have: 717-945-7546. Please share her story!

Zura will be up for adoption once she is fully healed and cleared by our vet. At this time, we are not taking applications for her. We will update once she is ready!

Meet Ernie!

Ernie came to us with an upper respiratory infection and both eye were infected. Everything cleared up well, but as you can see, he’s missing his left eye! His eye was most likely deformed when he was born. Since the infection cleared up, he has had no issues with his eye or eye socket. The vet believe he will but just fine with his left eye as it is. There is sometimes a little watery discharge, but this is normal and it just needs to be kept clean. He can still see perfectly fine and it does not stop him at all! Ernie loves to do zoomies and play. He loves the other kittens. He is also very snuggly and likes to be held. Ernie is approx. 3 months old, fully vaccinated and neutered once he is old enough.

If you are interested in adopting Ernie, please fill out the adoption application on our website: https://www.orcarescue.org/adoptable-pets

Meet Bert!

Bert came to us with severe eye infections and the start of an upper respiratory infection. He was started on medication and everything cleared up well. Bert’s left eye does have some cosmetic damage. The inner eye lids were connected where they shouldn’t be. When he got neutered, the vet slipped the eye lids to separate them and it has healed well. Bert has really come out of his shell in his time here. He was very reserved, and still can be, but has become playful and more outgoing. He loves to play with the other kittens. He is still pretty laid back and might need some time to warm up to his new family. Bert has been around dogs and isn’t a huge fan of them but might open up to one with some time. Bert is approx. 3 months old, fully vaccinated, and neutered.

If you are interested in adopting Bert, please fill out the adoption application on our website: https://www.orcarescue.org/adoptable-pets

Smaug is still available for adoption!

Smaug came to us when he was about 4 weeks old and had been found stuck in a car engine. Luckily, the callers were able to safely get him out and we picked him up to be checked for injuries. He was very lucky and was in great shape! Smaug is a little shy but is warms up to people with time. He loves his other kitten friends and is often playing with them or his favorite toy. We often find him curled up on his back in funny positions for nap time. Smaug is approx. 4 months old and is fully vaccinated and neutered.

‼️WE NEED YOUR HELP‼️

It has been an extremely busy season so far, and the honest truth is that we are low on funds. Vet bills add up quickly, especially with cases like Willow's. Willow has a severe break in her front, right leg. She will need her leg amputated. While Manheim Pike Vet is so great to us and gives us a discount, this is still a huge bill. Willow's surgery on the high end will be $1,800.

PLEASE, if you are able, help us raise the funds to cover her surgery. She is a sweet girl who deserves her chance to live a pain free life. If you prefer to not donate through Facebook, you can also donate through our website (linked below), or send a check to our office (401 E Orange Street, Lancaster, 17602).

We have 2,600 followers, if everyone just sends us $5, we can easily raise this money. Thank you for your support, especially during the tough ltimes.

Meet Gunther!

Gunther came to us with small wounds all over his body. We are unsure of how this happened, but he was possibly attacked by something. Everything healed up very well and he is doing great! He was also underweight, and has gained some weight, but still needs to gain a little more. Gunther is more on the quiet side and laid back. He does well with the other animals but mostly keeps to himself. He loves to be pet and get attention from the staff. Gunther is approx. 5 years old, fully vaccinated and neutered.

If you are interested in adopting Gunther, please fill out the adoption application on our website: https://www.orcarescue.org/adoptable-pets

Mo came to us after he was found alongside of Route 30. He had a swollen nose and some other trauma to his face. We believe he may have been clipped by a car. He likes to play with the other kittens as well, usually with Mozzarella or Simba. Mo is approx. 4 months old, fully vaccinated and neutered.

Meet Hubert!

Hubert came to us with a limp. He has put on pain meds and the limp cleared up very quickly, our vet believe he just pulled a muscle. His left eye has slight cosmetic damage, but this does not affect his vision. Hubert is very laid back and is usually hanging out in a box or somewhere else comfy. He is very sweet and likes attention. He does well with the other animals but mostly keeps to himself. Hubert is approx. 3 years old, fully vaccinated and neutered.

UPDATE! Rusty has been adopted!🩵

Meet Rusty!

Rusty came to us with a deep ear infection in her left ear. She received a long lasting, antibiotic shot, a steroid and an oral medication to clear it up. She recovered quickly and has not been uncomfortable. Since we believe she had the infection for quite some time, the vet thinks the ear infection slightly affects her balance. Her head tilts to the left side, but she can walk well, only sometimes going off balance. She is not bothered by this, she just has a cute, little quirk! Rusty is very lovey and sweet. She does very well with the other cats and dogs. She usually is in her little hideout (pictured). Another special quality Rusty has, is that she is a rare, orange female! Rusty is approx. 1 year old, spayed and fully vaccinated.

If you are interested in adopting Rusty, please fill out the adoption application on our website: https://www.orcarescue.org/adoptable-pets
