Double D Ranch Wyoming

Double D Ranch Wyoming The Double D brand began in 1996 when Doctor Dwayne and Denise Oldham started a Veterinary Clinic together.

It has since evolved to include multiple enterprises and now represents the Oldham family ranch. Double D is a working cattle ranch located at the foot of the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming. It's always been our goal here at Double D to raise and produce only the finest of beef that we wouldn't be ashamed to put on our own table. We've had the wonderful opportunity to raise high quality beef to put in our freezers for generations. Now we are proud to offer the same great opportunity to you!

Tuesday Tip: Be Prepared for Lambing & Kidding in Cold Weather! 🐑❄️🐐

Many are dealing with snow, ice and cold temperatures this week. Cold weather can be tough on newborn lambs and kids, but with the right preparations, you can help them thrive:

1️⃣ Warm & Dry Environment: Ensure your lambing/kidding pens are clean, draft-free, and well-bedded. Consider heat lamps or warming boxes for extra cold nights.

2️⃣ Colostrum is Key: Make sure lambs and kids nurse within the first hour to get the vital antibodies and energy they need. Keep colostrum replacer on hand for emergencies.

3️⃣ Dry Them Off Quickly: Newborns can lose body heat rapidly. Use clean towels to dry them thoroughly, focusing on their head and ears.

4️⃣ Check Umbilical Cords: Dip cords in iodine or chlorhexidine to prevent infections in damp, cold conditions.

5️⃣ Monitor Closely: Watch for signs of hypothermia or weakness, and act quickly if needed.

Preparation makes all the difference in ensuring strong, healthy lambs and kids this season.

We're between lambing groups and thought sharing our lambing kit might be helpful to folks gearing up for their own sets. We're big fans of being over prepared and working as clean as possible in a barn environment and believe most problems can be solved with the right gear and correct technique. But, you can't carry every tool and gadget into a lambing jug.

This is the stripped down kit of essentials we have with us:

1. Baby Lamb Strength - Each lamb gets two pumps to help provide energy and vitamin E.
2. Iodine - We spray every umbilical cord to try to prevent navel ill. We believe the spray method is more hygienic than dipping and are intentional about spraying the opening of the cord where pathogens are most likely to enter. We couple this effort with fresh bedding immediately after birth.
3. Antiseptic lubricant - For use in the event a ewe needs help with a malpresented lamb.
4. BoSe - To combat any selenium deficiency concerns (consult your veterinarian on this).
5. Brand new, single use needles and syringes - Keep your medications and animals contamination free and just use a new setup every time.
6. Stomach tube and 5oz catheter tip syringe - If a lamb isn't smart enough or strong enough to nurse mom within 30 minutes of birth, we milk her and tube feed the baby. There are mountains of data indicating how important colostrum is in terms of volume, speed of ingestion, and quality. Faster consumption is always better and there are tons of videos online demonstrating the safe use of these tools. We also keep spare setups on hand and wash them after each use to prevent contamination.
7. Bulb sucker - We use this to suck mucus out of newborn lambs' mouths/throats, particularly for lambs who had difficult births.
8. Rubber OB snare (sanitized after every use and kept in a new ziplock baggie) - Much easier to disinfect than rope or twine and less danger of uterine perforation than a wire snare.
9. Resuscitator - Not technically part of the kit, but we keep it out and handy for use and like to keep it close for any lamb born backwards or breech. One end pushes air and the other end pulls mucus. It can literally be a life saver and is more effective and safe for the shepherd than mouth-to-mouth.
* Nitrile gloves - Not pictured, because they're stored in a drawer, but we glove up every single time we assist a ewe with a presentation issue. Every time. Human medical professionals have time to put gloves on in emergency rooms, you have time to protect your and your ewes' health by throwing some gloves on before fixing a malpresented lamb.

💡🐑🐐 Tuesday Tip: Warming Up Newborn Lambs & Kids in Cold Weather ❄️

When a lamb or kid is born in cold weather, quick action is key to prevent hypothermia. Here’s the best way to warm them up:

1️⃣ Dry Them Off: Use clean, dry towels to remove moisture and stimulate circulation. A gentle rub also helps warm them up.

2️⃣ Provide Heat: Use a heat lamp, warming box, or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel. Never put a lamb or kid directly on a heating pad or too close to a lamp—overheating is dangerous!

3️⃣ Warm Supplementation: If they’re weak or cold, warm up colostrum or an electrolyte solution to body temperature (around 102°F) and feed it to give energy.

4️⃣ Move Them Indoors: If conditions are severe, temporarily move them to a dry, draft-free area like a barn or house until they’re stable.

A warm, dry lamb or kid is a healthy one! 🐑🐐🌡️

😬Another... potentially sensitive topic: ni***es🙊

In the process of cleaning out the cabinet of bottle lamb supplies, we found one of the old school, red, screw on ni***es every shepherd has cursed while attempting to coax a delicate baby sheep to pretend it's texture, shape, or leaky nature remotely resemble something like their mother.

A few years ago we swapped to human baby bottles, like the one on the right, and have never looked back. They're far better to measure total volume fed, they're more durable, dramatically decrease the risk of aspiration, are vented properly to decrease bloat/pot bellies, and lambs almost always take to the shape of the ni**le significantly more quickly. In our experience, you'll want to slit the very end of the ni**le and buy some Y cut additional ni***es as the lambs grow and want a faster flow of milk.

We regret to admit having become pretty proficient in the labor of love that is bottle feeding lambs. To have sheep is to have bummers and there's no reason they can't turn out just as good as their naturally reared siblings. With different facilities or setup we might consider switching to a milk machine or a dairy goat, but we're over a decade in and the tried and true method of either raising them on or supplementing triplets still with their mother with a bottle has been extremely successful for us. With that said, there's probably a character limit we'd exceed discussing the topic of bottle baby rearing, but if nothing else, do yourself a favor this lambing season and trash the old screw top ni***es and buy yourself something 👌real nice, Clark👌 and try the human baby bottle method.

👩‍🌾A quick word on animal husbandry as lambing is upon us🍼

This image is of a lamb in the "rescue position." We put all newborns (especially those who have harder births) in this position immediately after being born. This position (on their haunches, front legs extended, head between front legs) has been shown by significant research across many species to best facilitate lung expansion and fluids being naturally absorbed by the lamb to maximize breathing. We also like using a bulb sucker (you know, the thing children hate having put up their noses) to remove excess mucus from nostrils and mouths. And, a good old fashioned piece of straw up the nose to encourage coughing and breathing can't be beat.

🚫What don't we do?🙅‍♀️We do not hang baby sheep (or calves for that matter) up by their back legs, we don't hang them over a panel, and we don't spin them around like a figure skater by their ankles (iron lotus style). These strategies might have been suggested by an older generation to get fluid out of the lungs, but what we know now is that the fluid that comes out is actually from the animal's stomach, and causes greater respiratory distress in combination with the compression of their lungs caused by gravity from such positioning.

Good luck lambing! Let us know if you like this kind of content. We love hearing strategies for improved animal care and lamb survival. Drop yours in the comments below!
