Spring time means mulch time! If you have mulch in your yard, especially in an area that your dog or cat has access to, it is very important to avoid using Cocoa Mulch. This mulch smells like chocolate, which can be enticing to our pets to eat, but it is toxic to them. The mulch, like chocolate, contains Theobromine which is toxic to dogs and cats and can cause serious issues if ingested in large quantities. Be safe and use a different type of mulch!

As the eclipse next week gets closer, we have had some ask if they need to make any preparations for their pets. As most dogs know better than to look directly at the sun, it is unlikely that your pup will notice. There have been instances recorded during past eclipses of wildlife and livestock acting strangely though, so you may want to keep your pets indoors during the eclipse, just to ensure they are in a safe environment from other animals. If the eclipse does appear to be causing your dog stress or anxiety you can take them into a quiet room and distract them with treats, training, or toys. As the eclipse should only last about 5 minutes, in our area, any stress caused should be brief. If you do have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out!

Important update for our out-of-state boarders: The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has put into effect new requirements for dogs coming into the state for boarding. Effective January 24th, dogs crossing into PA for boarding will need a health certificate, issued by their vet, confirming that they are healthy and not showing symptoms of a communicable disease prior to their boarding. This update does NOT affect PA residents. We understand that this is an inconvenience and are here to help with any questions you may have!

It's National Black Cat Day! Here are a few interesting tidbits about our curious, charcoal friends:

1. There are 22 official breeds of cat that can have a solid black coat!
2. Some black cats possess the underlying tabby gene and if they lay in the sun for an extended period, the sun's rays break down the pigment in their fur revealing faint stripes!
3. Due to genetics, black cats have amber eyes because they produce a large amount of melanin.
4. Black is the most common fur color in cats!
5. Negative superstition around black cats likely started in the Middle Ages. It is even possible that the negativity around black cats led to a decrease in the cat population, resulting in an increased population in rats that were instrumental in the spread of the bubonic plague!
6. Their black coats have provided an evolutionary advantage of camouflage at night AND it has been found by the National Institutes of Health that the melanism that gives their pigmentation boosts their immune system!
7. British sailors would have black cats on board for luck to ensure a safe return home, with the added benefit of rat control, while fishermen's wives would keep them at home for the same reason!
