Great read! I appreciate anyone who breeds dogs that have drive and purpose and don't try to dumb their breeds down.
SUPPORT BREEDERS WHO LOVE DRIVE!
The desire to Chase and Catch to Pin, Wrestle, Shake, and Win are all natural to dogs. To breed away from it is to give the false impression that you can make a dog less than what it really is, when we all know nature is going to pop back up eventually. Instead of breeders attempting to suppress genetics, they should learn to appreciate dog breeds for what they are and promote ways to provide stimulation in methods that are functional, beneficial, and convenient for both dog and handler. We're in a time where more and more people are wanting to explore hunting, working, and sports with their dogs and those people who want to do more with their dog deserve to have a dog that fits their lifestyle.
If drive was more accepted, the more available knowledge would be on how to manage it, and that could lead to less dogs being surrendered in shelters if we can encourage regular pet owners to meet their dogs needs. Anti-Drive breeders say "But it'll be too much to handle" when they should the first ones to teach, guide, or mentor on how to best build a dog and how to give them the best life with the traits they come with. It's only too much to handle because a lot of breeders, despite all the health testing and show titles, are really just trying to sell pets for profit. They say they're ethical and for the breed but is it really ethical if they're attempting to hide what that breed is? They sell the lie that "my dogs are well tempered" because they think they finally removed the dogs natural desire to chase and put their mouth on something.
A breeder who appreciates and understands drive are going to give people insight on what to look out for and how to handle things. They'll let the person know the breeds history and the typography of their behaviors. They'll have experience breaking up fights, putting on a solid obedience foundation to take their dog most places, putting their dogs in events or scenarios to get their stimulation and needs, and proper feeding guidelines. If we keep people who are against drive on a pedestal, the number of misguided people will remain or slowly increase.
Just my thoughts, what are yours?
