This is a public service announcement. Please be aware that it is getting cold everywhere and that cold makes especially cats get into warm engines. Even when the car is turned off that is a very warm spot for them to be. As an example we have a car that we do not use and we are extremely aware that some of the feral cats get into that car when it gets cold. I never turned it on without checking. You also need to check for kittens because they have no idea what's going on even when the car turns on. So please be careful be safe and always be cautious. Our furry little friends deserve our best intentions always.

We often get asked about eartipping—what it is and why adoptable cats have them.

Eartipping is a procedure done under anesthesia that removes the tip of the left ear as an easy-to-spot indication that the cat is neutered or spayed. It’s performed while the cat is already under anesthesia for the neuter/spay surgery.

According to Alley Cat Allies, no other method of identification is as safe or effective. The group notes that ear-notching could be mistaken for an injury and tattoos can’t be seen until the cat is already trapped. Additionally, eartipping creates little or no bleeding and very little pain.

It’s easy to understand why a feral or “community cat” benefits from eartipping: Caretakers know which animals still need sterilization and which don’t. But why might a cat or kitten up for adoption at your local shelter or rescue have one?

A common reason is the cat started out in a feral/stray colony or litter. TNR (trap, neuter, release) volunteers and programs often capture mothers and their litters to be sterilized and vaccinated. Eartipping is a routine part of TNR, regardless of the individual animal’s temperament. Cats and kittens that show promise of being adoptable may be pulled afterward to go into rescue, or may be rescued by another person at a later point.

It’s important to remember that rescuers are always evaluating the potential sociability of community cats with the goal of providing adoptable cats the opportunity to know a loving home. Please don’t hold an eartip against a kitty. Chances are, they’ve worked hard to survive in spite of a rough start in life, and they are as capable of being a beloved family member as any other cat.

Containers desperately needed

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN!
Our shelter maker is in need of styrofoam containers to make for the outdoor kitties to stay warm this winter!

They need to be at least 14x18 which leaves an inside dimensions of 12x16 if it’s thick. The BIGGER, the BETTER!

Please let us know if you can help us help the cats stay warm this winter
