South Lansing Urban Gardens - SLUG Our SLUG program is a local farm facility that grows clean produce year-round. We grow in greenhouse, hoophouse, and in community garden space.

All produce is donated to the South Lansing community through food pantries and community kitchens. At Slug, we redefine the agricultural system by employing sustainable practices, community collaboration , and food accessibility promotion.

November reminds us to be thankful. The morning sunrise is glistening with frost on everything. My snapdragons will be deadheaded for next years seeds. My daughter, Marie Christina introduced me to dollar store decorations, and she is the queen of home decorating! My slippers are warming my toes and my coffee is opening my eyes! May you be blessed today as your journey awaits. Smile and have a great day!!!

Anyone else experiencing the Fall ladybug appearances? Did you know in some areas Ladybugs are known as "Halloween Beetles"? Ladybugs are moving from our garden areas to find warmer places to live. And yes homes are a good place for them to move. You may not notice or mind a few ladybugs, but if you have an older home, don't be surprised to have more than a few. Why? They like to lay down a pheromone trail to tell others your house is inviting and a great place to lay their eggs. Ladybugs are not harmful, but you can disrupt the pheromone trail with "smelly" things. Consider essential oils or spices in door and window areas if needed.

Don't panic with these cold nights this week. Yes our peppers and tomatoes are shaking a little bit, BUT, it's gonna get warm again. Tomatoes can tolerate 50 degrees at night, but they prefer it a little warmer. Peppers are heat lovers so they prefer at least 60 degrees.

Now this little blip is not a huge problem. What is more important? The length of daylight hours and the suns intensity. Our plants feel the few minutes of darkness creeping in. Yes cold temps slow them down, but even more slowing is the light!

So don't panic yet, but time to start spending these cooler days to do some heavy lifting projects, like I'm doing some work on my block sidewalks and landscape walls at home.

Think about extending your growing season with cool crops, like lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, greens, etc. Maybe a small hoop structure to cover with fabric because our cool crops will tolerate some colder nights, even light frost. Why not enjoy some fresh greens later in the fall. Actually some of these cool crops get sweeter as they get colder.
