We’ve skipped a few Working Dog Wednesdays. Between myself being sick, my partner being sick, and Cricket having what we think was mange, training fell to the wayside.
Over the next few weeks, I’m hoping to do some hardcore training boot camp to get her back to where I want her to be for her age (which we are thinking is actually a couple weeks younger than what we were told).
Also, she gets her rabies and final distemper shots next week! So in a few weeks, we’ll finally be able to do more exposure in public spaces!

Welcome back to Working Dog Wednesday!
One of the most crucial foundational skills to work on with a working dog (or any dog) is socialization. There is some debate regarding the "prime" socialization period, but generally between 5 and 16 weeks puppies' brains are absolute sponges, and any scary interactions during this time can affect them forever. Therefore, its extremely important to get in lots of positive interactions with as many things as possible during this time.
Cricket went on an adventure to the Starbucks drive-thru this week, and her wonderful behavior earned her her very first Pup Cup. We want Cricket to be as comfortable as possible while in the car, since she'll be spending so much time in one throughout her working career.
Training a service dog is no joke. The amount of time, thought, and effort that goes into training these dogs is immense. Service dogs take one to two years of training before they are considered ‘fully trained’.
This dedication of time and energy is why bringing untrained, unmanageable dogs into non-pet friendly spaces is so dangerous and frustrating to service dog handlers. Months or years worth of training can be completely unwound within a matter of minutes.

The holiday season can be a fun time to spoil your pet and let them know how loved they are. However, there are many items that we keep in our homes during this season that can be harmful, or even fatal, to our pets. While some symptoms of ingestion can be as mild as drooling or an upset stomach, it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to these foods and plants. In case of accidental ingestion, make sure you have the information for your local emergency vet clinic handy.
Olive woke up this morning and thought it was Friday. She was very disappointed when I told her otherwise.
For those that don’t know Atlas and his history, this might just look like a photo of a stressed out dog. Those that know him know how monumental this is.
Atlas is a retired service dog who had to be pulled from public access work due to a random onset of fear of refrigerators. We worked hard to overcome that fear, but ultimately we decided to retire him.
We’ve been working hard to get him over that fear, mainly for his own mental health. Last night, he offered me this laying down position entirely on his own. While he was still very stressed, this is amazing progress.
Anybody know the going rate for shipping two naughty pups to the North Pole this holiday season?
All jokes aside, teaching your dog to get in and out of boxes or laundry baskets is an excellent confidence building exercise. Also, it’s really really cute.
Jester says it is simply too cold to consider doing anything productive today. She’s just going to stay cuddled up in her blankets.
Love and snuggles aren’t put on hold because of a little bit of snow!
Miss Martini needed some attention this morning, so I trudged out of the house to make sure she had plenty of snacks and play time.
