We are raising funds for our friend and neighbor Lee Scott. The breaks on his truck went out a couple weeks ago and he ended up crashing into the river, his truck was completely submerged in water (see picture) and he had to struggle to get out before it sunk completely. Luckily he is physically okay but his truck is totaled. Lee needs his vehicle for his work and livelihood and he is now without any form of transportation. Lee’s hot water heater also broke this past month and he has been grieving the loss of a close family member. This month has been particularly trying for him but he remains strong and positive. Lee is active in the community always providing a safe haven for those who need it. He has reversed 7 overdoses by providing life saving Narcan to people. He provides free furniture, clothes and more to the neighborhood through his weekly yard sales and is getting ready to start a substance use recovery class which will be meeting at the Fledge. Let’s show Lee that we appreciate all he does by helping him out now in this moment of need. Please donate if you can.

Hey farm friends! We have been working with and for the last couple of years to establish a FREE farm tool lending library. The library is stocked up with various specialty tools including a really nice walk behind tractor. We are now looking for new members to join this project. By joining the project you will have access to all the tools in the library as well as an equal say in how the library is managed and what new tools you would like to see purchased with our remaining budget. We are hoping to organize a new member meeting in April so if you are interested in joining this project please message me so I can add you to our contact list 💚🌱

Hi everyone! We have some important updates to share about the upcoming season, so please read on if you are interested in the hot farm gossip ❤

As many of you already know, we operate a vegetable, flower and herb farm here in Lansing, MI. We are entering our sixth year of farming (!!!) and are extremely proud and grateful for this work and for the opportunity to access land and to grow fresh, nourishing food for the community. We distribute most of the food we grow on a sliding scale at the Allen Farmers Market, which is just a few blocks from the farm. We have much love for our weekly ritual of setting up our vegetable displays and getting to see and talk to our friends and neighbors when they come to our stand. Farming is hard work, but our market days are a refreshing break in our week and source of joy and fun.

That being said, this year we have made the hard decision to take the season off from the market in order to prioritize two things--engaging more people in this work and planning for the long term future of the farm, both of which are connected. We love this work, but we cannot continue to do it in the way that we are currently. We are growing as much food as we can physically grow with our bare hands and we are selling the majority of what we grow with little to no waste. We feel successful in most measures and yet still, we cannot afford to pay ourselves a living wage. This is the reality of farming in this country. Most farmers have to have another “real” job in order to make ends meet. Off farm income represents 56% of total income for established farmers and 77% of total income for beginner farmers*. The numbers ain’t good folks. Like many other young farmers, we have been working our night jobs and side hustles, but it requires us to burn the candle at both ends in a way that doesn’t feel sustainable or healthy for us in the long term.

All this points us to a conclusion that we’ve known from very early on in this project--that the standard model is not working, at least not for us. And that’s okay. Private farm and business ownership is not really a dream of ours. Food is not a business to us. We believe that the future of farming lies in collective land stewardship. This is how food has been grown for much of human history and was a common place practice across many cultures worldwide prior to colonization.

We are interested in different models of growing and distributing food to the community, ones where the time we spend with our plants is less rushed and commodified and where working together with others is woven into the fabric of the farm. We have been exploring worker owned cooperative models and dreaming about a world of food sovereignty where we all work together to plant, grow, process and distribute the food we eat. We are interested in making space for people to learn and practice their own growing skills, as these are the skills we will all need to have familiarity with if we are going to build the society that we are fighting for.

These are goals that we have had since we first started farming and it has been a challenge to continue to prioritize them when so much of farming is just figuring out how to get through the week ahead with a to-do list that's a mile long. There are times in life when we need to rally and push on and there are times when it is better to take a step back, pause, reflect and strategize. Now is the latter for us.

So, this season we will be scaling back. We will be planting fewer crops and giving the soil a chance to rest. We will be selling veggies through the Veggie Box and the East Lansing Food Co-op, but just what we need to to be able to cover the costs of seed, utilities, and other overhead expenses. We will be getting extra scrappy this year and spending as little as possible!

The bulk of what we grow we will share with folks who come out to the farm to grow with us : ) Instead of going to the market weekly to see you all we will be hosting weekly participation hours at the farm in hopes that you all will come to see us, to help out and to share in the fruits of our collective labor. We will have preservation parties to can veggies and to make herbs into medicine. We will take the season to build better systems for cooperative growing, to reflect on what is working, we will gather input and we will scheme n’ dream for the future of the farm. Then come fall and winter we will make a plan for what this project will look like moving forward.

Thank you again so very much for all your support over the years. We will keep you in the loop as things progress. We are excited for these new seeds we are sowing to sprout. 🌱 💕

Thank you so much to all the people who came out to our chapstick and salve making party last week or threw us some money for supplies! We made 70 tubes of chapstick and salve to donate to Lansing Syringe Access and Punks with Lunch! We got feedback already from someone that it’s helping her clear up a chemical burn 🙏 Calendula is a truly magical plant 🌱🪄

Next month we are gonna have a tincture making party so stay tuned for dates if you’re interested in coming out. We got a lot of feedback last year that people wanted to see and learn how to prepare medicinal herbs so we’re gonna shoot to have one little work party a month so we can prepare them together 💚 Leave us a comment with a request if there’s something in particular you want to make!

Today is our last day at the farmers market for the whole season. is running the stand today so come by and say hey. It’s raining pretty hard, but we’ve got a ton of veggies for you. Please come out if you can, it really makes a difference—each one of you that comes out to get the veggies we grow. We’re open to haggles so it’s a good day to come out and get a deal on some bulk stuff to freeze or can.

This is the close of our 5th season believe it or not! It’s been a tough one because of a lot of health issues and personal stuff going on, but overall it’s been a good season and we’re proud to have seen yet another one through. Thank you all so very much again, from the bottom of our pea pickin’ hearts, for your support. We feel honored to grow food for you. A special thank you goes out to Larry for bringing us fresh fish all summer in exchange for tomatoes and for Saba for giving us homemade dolma every week for eggplant. We love trading so much and this brightened our spirits and nourished our bellies. Thank you to Jenny the market manager for all her organizing efforts and to all the volunteers who help make the market run each week. Thank you to and all the farmers we work with in the Ingram County Community Greenhouse. Thank you to .gif and all our other friends and family who gave us love and support during rough times early this spring, that got us through. It takes a village to raise a farm. With love and gratitude 💗

It’s market day but are hearts are heavy. I don’t feel like posting pictures of vegetables while thousands of Palestinians die and millions suffer. It’s not a war when you drop 6,000 bombs in 6 days, it’s a massacre. We must ask ourselves, why the deaths of some civilians are viewed as “victims of terrorism” and the deaths of others are viewed as “collateral damage”. As a Jew, I’m horrified by the way that accusations of anti semitism are being used to quell criticism of these bombings and the decades of colonial occupation that preceded them. Violence does not justify more violence! Not in our name! Stop weaponizing our grief! Stop the genocide! End the occupation! Freedom for Palestine!

We’ll be collecting donations for the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund today so please donate if you come by the stand. Here are some actions happening in the area over the next couple days. It’s easy to feel like a speck of dust in the eye of a giant, but don’t give up. Go to the protests, make the phone calls, donate if you can. Stay active. Do the small things you can do, collectively they make a difference.
