Capital Area Humane Society The Capital Area Humane Society (CAHS) is a non-profit, animal-welfare organization in Lansing, MI. More than 10,000 animals come through our doors each year.

At the Capital Area Humane Society, we are passionate about animals. Our wide variety of programs and services exist to serve the pets and people of Mid-Michigan. More than 2,500 volunteers devote 32,000+ hours of time each year to ensure our animals are properly socialized, exercised, and loved. The shelter

receives no tax dollars or government funding and relies on the generosity of donors to help us provide love, food, shelter, and medical care to homeless and abandoned pets. We are a local, private, and independent animal welfare organization founded in Lansing in 1936 and all donations and gifts directed to the CAHS are used to assist the animals in the greater Lansing community. Happy Tails!
Sponsored by Dowding Industries, Inc.

Colleen adopted Tiny Tina ( now Nina ) July 2024. Here's some cuteness to enjoy.

" She was a very scared little girl when we adopted her, but her confidence has grown in leaps and bounds. Now she is a goofy little cuddle bug and agent of chaos who loves to snooze on her humans, use dog beds in the most creative ways, and guard the house with her much-adored big brother Banjo (a 2018 CAHS alum). We are so happy Nina has joined our family! "

Thank you for choosing adoption Collen! Banjo and Nina are certainly living their best lives!

In celebration of Black History Month, CAHS would like to recognize the contributions made by Dr. Lila Miller, known as “the Mother of Shelter Medicine” to the animal sheltering community. Much of the success CAHS has had in placing animals in loving homes can be credited to improvements in sheltering developed and advocated by Dr. Miller.

As one of the first Black women to graduate from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1977, Dr. Miller has devoted her career to aiding homeless animals.

When she graduated, life for pets in animal shelters was very different from today. Annual euthanasia rates were in the multi-millions, with animals often put down due to a lack of space, minor temperament issues, or treatable illnesses.

Back then, Dr. Miller notes, caring for those animals wasn’t widely seen as a promising career path. “There was a real stigma attached to veterinarians working in shelters,” she recalls. “The perception was that the only vets who worked there were at the end of their careers, or they couldn’t hack it in the real world.”

Today, thanks in large part to Dr. Miller’s efforts, shelter medicine is its own recognized specialty. It’s essentially a hybrid of two fields, combining the practices of large-animal veterinarians (managing the health of creatures living closely together in large groups, like herds of dairy cows) with that of companion animal vets, who care for individual dogs, cats, and other household pets.

Shelter medicine also addresses how the stress and logistics of living in a shelter can impact both mental and physical wellbeing. “One of the things we’ve implemented, that I’m very proud of, is understanding the importance of environmental and behavioral enrichment,” Dr. Miller says. “In the past, you’d put an animal in a cage and give them food and water, and that was it. Now, we recognize that the animal needs so much more.”

Throughout her career, Dr. Miller has helped countless shelters and at-risk animals. In the late seventies, as an animal care supervisor for the ASPCA—which then operated five full-service shelters in NYC—she developed and implemented new animal care and triage training programs for staff and created new adoptability criteria to move animals out of shelters quickly to prevent the spread of disease.

Dr. Miller also co-taught the first shelter medicine class at Cornell. She co-founded the Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) and co-authored ASV’s 2010 Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters, the first scientific document by veterinarians that addresses the care and welfare of shelter animals. Dr. Miller also co-edited four shelter medicine textbooks that are widely used today, and she lectures at veterinary colleges and conferences around the world.

Pet of the Week!

Meet Cocoa!!

Cocoa is a sweet 1-year-old pup with a playful and affectionate personality. She loves playing with toys and enjoys treats, although she can be a bit picky about them. Chest and shoulder pets are her favorite, and she quickly warms up to people after a little time.

Cocoa spent some time in foster care, where she settled in quickly and revealed her cuddly side. Once comfortable, she has no sense of personal space and loves being close to her people.

While she still has some puppy energy, she knows how to relax and snuggle, making her a delightful companion. Although she doesn’t seem to know any commands yet, she has plenty of potential to learn with a bit of patience and encouragement.

Pop by the shelter to meet this lovely girl with the best ears today!

Cocoa is spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccines and preventatives.
