*Kennel Cough Update*
Since our last update, we've had 1 more report of a dog coughing. (3 confirmed cases reported total)

From the information we've gathered so far, this strain's symptoms are a cough that is lasting 5+ days. No reports of nasal discharge or fever.

If your dog has stayed with us recently and has displayed any coughing symptoms, please give us a call at 517-482-7799.
Any time we are dealing with a strain of this we like to gather as much information as possible so that we know better what we are dealing with.

How you can stop the spread:
*If your dog has stayed with us recently, please refrain from taking them to other dog friendly places such as dog parks, pet stores, other facilities for 14 days.
*Wash your hands after petting dogs from other households.
*Keep your pet home and away from others if they start showing any symptoms of coughing, sneezing, respiratory symptoms.

To answer some common questions regarding kennel cough:
Can my dog get it since they are vaccinated? Yes, dogs who are vaccinated can still get kennel cough. The vaccine only covers the most common strains. Viruses are always changing and there will be strains that the vaccine doesn't fully protect against.
I have a reservation coming up. I can't cancel my trip. What do I do? That's ok! We are still happy to board your dog. We are doing everything in our power to stop the spread but there is still a chance that your dog could be exposed. If you decide to cancel your stay after all, you can do so and will not be charged any fee for canceling.
Why is kennel cough back already? The last time we had an outbreak was late October/ early November 2024. Although it is not ideal to be potentially dealing with this again, our community is really dog friendly. Dogs can pick up these illnesses from going inside the pet store, visiting an area that is popular as a sniff spot for other dogs (fire hydrant or popular rock to sniff and potty on), visiting a dog park, going to other facilities for grooming/daycare, etc.
What is Wag'n Tails doing to help stop the spread?
Since kennel cough inevitably happens, all kennels should have a protocol in place when facing a potential outbreak.
Our cleaning procedures have been changed to include disinfecting dilution ratios (not just sanitizing) of our products. We have brought in additional air filtration. We are also leaving our outside middle yard empty to lessen chances of dogs touching noses outside. We are washing everything repeatedly.

My dog has a grooming appointment coming up, is that an issue? As of right now, the reported case was a dog who stayed in our kennel area. Our grooming salon dogs are rarely reported to contract it while here.

This is very early but we've received word about a case of kennel cough. We don't have much information to go off of right now as far as incubation time or length of time symptoms go on for. If you have boarded your dog with us since 3/1 and your dog displayed any coughing behavior (that is unusual for them), please give us a call at 517-482-7799 so we can gather some information from you.
