Because there is always one.. DO NOT inject banamine in the muscle. EVER.

Yellowstone fans that are real horse people got a little confusing information on the Sunday, November 17, 2024 episode. This popular show appears to take pride in its western production on being very authentic - yet some how they had a BIG mistake with treating a horse with intramuscular Banamine.

What is the BIG deal? In this Yellowstone episode a horse was administered Banamine (Flunixin Meglumine) intramuscularly. Yet the nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory is only administered orally (in the mouth) or intravenously (in the vein). Remember Banamine is never recommend to be administered to horses any other way.

Why not? Banamine causes muscle damage when injected intramuscularly! There are spores of bacteria known as clostridium that can rest in healthy muscle; however, the bacteria may awaken if the muscle becomes damaged from an IM injection particularly when Banamine is administered this way. This may cause clostridial myositis - which is a serious and sometimes fatal disease. Post injection signs of a problem would be swelling and a painful injection site with gas underneath the skin. The bacterial toxins may migrate into the bloodstream causing depression, colic, fever and a lose of appetite. Treatment by a licensed DVM is necessary if you make this mistake. Supportive care, antibiotics, and possibly a surgical excision of the infected injected site may be necessary.

This episode of Yellowstone was a good reminder - what is entertaining may not always be real and correct. Check with your equine veterinarian if you are unsure how to administer Banamine.

Ok, after lots of "tire kickers", the PB pig has found a home and will be starting her new life there Monday. Appreciate everyone's interest.

All ducks and chickens have been taken. We still have Rosie a 10 yr old female pot belly who lives outside with a barn to hang out in. Her mate passed few years back . Sanctuaries are full. Owners are down to the wire and need to find a home asap.

Didn't expect such a huge response. Owner has been given list and I will delete post once new home is found. Turning off commenting for now. Thank you for everyone's interest.

Client relocating out of state due to job and needs to rehome approximately 7 chickens, 7 ducks and 1 pot belly pig ASAP. Please private message if interested.

Ever wondered how our anatomy compares to a horse’s? 🧐 Check out this colorful schematic of a human foot and a horse’s hind limb! Did you know that our heel is actually the equivalent of the point of the hock in a horse? 🦶➡️🐴

UPCOMING DATES and INFORMATION TO KNOW

11/4 - DR SMITH UNAVAILABLE
11/20 - DR SMITH UNAVAILABLE AND OFFICE CLOSED
11/28 + 11/29 OFFICE CLOSED FOR THANKSGIVING.

FYI - The office will be working on adjusted hours after November 20th for a while. Please call ahead to ensure a trip is not wasted.

That said... If you are planning to attend upcoming shows such as NAILE or other national shows PLEASE READ YOUR PREMIUM BOOKS FOR SHOW REQUIREMENTS. Some shows require testing or statements above and beyond what state entry requirements are. Do not wait til the last minute to figure this out. Some lab tests take longer than others. Failure to plan and research for YOUR show does not constitute an emergency on our part.
Exhibitors have been turned away and refused entry for not having proper testing.

State requirements can be found at www.interstatelivestock.com

Each show may have additional requirements and therefore it's important for you to read your entry requirements and get on the book for Doc to inspect your animals for your Certificate of Veterinary Inspection to be completed.

The following information is required for ALL health certificates.

Name, address and phone of Owner/Exhibitor

Name, address and phone of Show/Sale/Buyer

Animal Info:
Name, date of birth, breed, color, and s*x .

Depending on species, 840 tags, scrapie tags, tattoos , registration papers if registered , will be required for identification.

My job is to tell you that you need a CVI. Not to force you to get one. Many risk it and are fine but some states have been known to impound your animals, truck and trailers, as well as,fine you for failure to do so. Most reputable transporters will not accept your animals without one.

A Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI), also known as a health certificate, is required when transporting animals or participating in certain events:

Interstate and international travel: A CVI is required to transport animals across state lines or out of the country.

Intrastate travel: Some states require a CVI for travel within the state.

Events: A CVI is often required for animals participating in events like shows, sales, and rides.

We need your help!

We are in need of wet and dry dog food and wet and dry cat food. We are very low on food for the shelter animals and this means we are also unable to help the community members that come to us for help feeding their animals.
We are also in need of toys for our pups.
Below are some links for food and a link to our Amazon wishlist.
We provide these links for ease of ordering. We will gratefully accept any donations from any retail store you choose.
We prefer Purina for dry food and wet food for the dogs, Pedigree for wet dog food as well, Purina for dry food for the cats and Friskies Pate for the cats. Kittens get Fancy Feast for kittens, but again we will use and appreciate any donations.
Toy ideas can be found in Amazon wishlist link at the bottom of this post.
Donations can be sent to the shelter at 2855 West State Rd. 2 LaPorte,In 46350 or dropped off at the shelter during business hours. For the month of September those hours are 10am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.
We thank you for your continued support.
