Loving Care Animal Hospital has been serving the greater Largo area's pet lovers for over twenty years. During that time, we have consistently been known for providing quality care and making it accessible to all families. Our mission is to help all pet owning families provide the loving care their pets deserve. In 2009, Dr. Richard Dinon purchased Loving Care Animal Hospital, and has strived to k

eep these traditions alive, but at the same time elevating the level of service, medicine, and compassion to the highest possible. During this time, we have become a full-service veterinary hospital and have added innovations such as advanced anesthetic monitoring programs, microchipping, ultrasound, and wellness care to keep our patients safe, healthy, and happy. These, and many other great new changes have been made, all while holding on to the ideal that this compassionate standard of care should be available to every single one of our patients and pet owners. At Loving Care Animal Hospital, we are also proud to say that since our beginnings, we have been the sole veterinary office of both the Pinellas County Sherriff's Office and Largo Police Department's K9 Officer Units. We continue to provide care to these vital officers so that they can safely and effectively keep our community free from crime and a great place to live. As a service to these heroes, we offer free lifetime care for retired K9 officers of all police agencies, and truly believe that this isn't nearly enough to thank these officers for their daily sacrifice. We urge all of our friends and clients to thank these heroes by donating to charities that support them.

Meet Lexie, our pet of the week. She is a 9 week old domestic shorthair that came in for her second round of kitty vaccines. Her favorite toy to play with is an orange mouse. Dr. Richard is very excited to be Lexie's veterinarian.

Normally on Saturdays we like to post our Pet of the Week, but this week there is a more serious matter to share. Another outbreak of K9 Distemper has occurred in the racoon population of Ft DeSoto. It is believed that the source is unvaccinated dogs bringing the virus into the park, which is then spread by the local raccoons. An outbreak also occurred several years ago and has the potential to spread beyond Ft DeSoto into Pinellas County.
Dr. Richard has worked in animal hospitals since he was 14 years old and has been a veterinarian since 2002, and has never seen a case of K9 Distemper (as is the case with most veterinarians). We have been lucky that it has mostly been eradicated around the US. It is a very serious disease which can cause major neurologic, respiratory, and gastrointestinal symptoms, We want make sure to bring this news to your attention because now more than ever it's important to keep your dogs up to date on their vaccinations. Dr. Richard is hoping to keep his streak of never seeing a case of Distemper going.

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you have a great day tomorrow with family and friends.
We will be closed Thursday, but back in the office for our normal schedule on Friday at 8AM.
As a reminder, please don't feed your pets from the Thanksgiving table. We know you want to include your furry friends, but all of that people food will lead to upset stomachs or pancreatitis. If you do, there's a good chance you'll have to spend Black Friday with us.

Mental Enrichment

We always try to focus on discussing the physical health of our patients with their owners, but one thing that often doesn't get discussed is mental and emotional health and enrichment. Now that Dr. Richard has a new puppy, it's a good time to discuss them. Dogs of all ages, not just puppies need mental enrichment to keep them both physically and mentally healthy. Dogs love to explore, learn, and problem solve, but unforunately we often don't give them enough opportunities. Do you have or know of a dog that's always hyper, neurotic, seems board, digs holes constantly, or is a serious barker? Often these are symptoms of a bored dog. We can make our dogs be physically active by throwing a ball or taking them for a walk, but that's just part of the equation. They need mental stimulation as well, and that's often hard to attain. During puppy classes, the trainer had a discussion about ways to stimulate a dog's mind. She had several "treat puzzles" that she highly recommended. Dr Richard and his wife ordered a few, and the results have been amazing. Both the puppy, Molly and Nas, their older dog, have used the treat puzzles and they love them. Not only that, you can see that the puzzles wear them out more than a run around the block or the backyard. They go crazy doing the puzzles and figuring them out, and shortly afterwards pass out or play quietly. At times Molly has been a handful to deal with. Dr. Richard will feed her her entire dinner from the treat puzzle seen in the video, and she becomes a model citizen. If you want to give it a try and see how your dog does, we'll add links to a couple of the puzzles. One in particular, the Buster matt, allows for adding multiple different puzzles as your dog progresses.
