Working exclusively with K9 Otto and Ofc. Delanoy today. This team has come a long way in the few months they've been together. Otto went from a "leave 'em in the car" overly aggressive reaction to the hospital environment to now calmly patroling the very busy ER, standing posts, and people sniff search work. It has been nothing but hard work in training by this team to achieve these results. In the last video, Otto very proficiently scans the main entrance line crowd, alerting to the assault rifle magazine and ammunition concealed in my bag. TGH is innovating with this program and leading the industry in hospital security.

Picture yourself as an athlete, only you never know when your game is. How ready would you stay for the game? Adopt this mentality in K9, and success will follow. Maintain a constant state of readiness in your partner and yourself.

🐾 Meet our Muddy Paws Fur-Family 🐾

Mars “The Old Man” was Tony’s dual purpose working dog from 2012-2019. He now spends his days enjoying brunches with mom and dad and (reluctantly) being the new puppy’s jungle gym and pillow.

Logan is Tony’s current dual purpose working dog since 2019. He is the happiest, craziest, most energetic dog, and he loves going to work and fetching planks (yes… planks of wood).

Gus Gus is the newest member of our family, a lab/plot hound/who knows little mutt we rescued in May. He is so smart and sweet and loves running around with Logan and snuggling with everyone, but especially Mars (when Mars lets him 🤣).

"Every handler gets the dog they deserve"

As I finished what was possibly my millionth training track today during my 20 year K9 career I was reminded of recently hearing someone refer to a handler as "lucky" he has a good dog in a way that seemed to dismiss the hours, years of hard work I know that team has put in. No dog is perfect, and neither is it's human counterpart. To achieve this "push button" status takes a properly selected animal sure, quality training techniques, of course, but the most undeniable ingredient is a committed handler hammering away day after day. Attacking every deficiency of their own and their partners. Countless failures and frustrations. Striving to comminicate more effectively with their K9, learning and applying new techniques, teaching new behaviors, achieving higher standards, and constantly growing as individuals and as a team. Truly maintaining a constant state of readiness. In my time I have seen great dogs brought to unworkable status by poor handlers. We are quick to blame the dog then. Or shell out the mantra, "every handler gets the dog they deserve." And we are quick to see those that are good OR better than us as "lucky" with the dog they have. Luck is not given it is earned. The harder they train, the "luckier" those teams seem to get. Make no mistake, there is no talent here, only obsession. An obsession to be the best at my craft. Every training night was dedicated to me and my problems those early years. I was not naturally skilled or raised as a dog trainer. I was simply not good enough yet to get my dog to do what he was capable of. My K9s were not pre-trained, and they were made up from the same genetic material and drives all good police dogs are. The same make up your K9s are. They are not special, they are not "crazy" or "stupid." No more than any other K9 is. 😁 You just need to be better to get them there.

We always get the dog we deserve.
