TINY, CUTE PATIENT:

Pectus excavatum is a congenital defect resulting in a chest wall deformity.

This defect affects the ribs and sternum which do not grow properly, resulting in a concavity in the chest. This deformity causes compression of the right side of the heart creating difficulty breathing, exercise intolerance, inappetence, recurrent respiratory infections, weight loss, cough, and heart murmurs.

Predisposition for pectus excavatum is seen in Bengal and Burmese cats as well as brachycephalic dogs, most commonly in the Maltese and English Bulldog.

OUR AMAZING SURGEON:
In the typical canine and feline patient that have clinical signs for this disease, an external splint can be placed by suturing it around its sternum to allow opening of the thoracic cavity and allow full inflation of the lungs and improved cardiac output. In the rare case of a puppy or kitten over 4 or 5 months old a more invasive technique is needed.
