Lately he has been keeping a very close eye on me as I just had my second hip surgery a month ago. He makes sure I’m comforted and even behaved for my mom when he went to the self serve dog wash when he was stinky and needed a bath. Now that I am more mobile and can put weight on my leg I have been working on walking Heath with my crutches. He is very attentive and doesn’t forge forward. We even went on a day out running errands and he stayed by my side in a busy kid filled Walmart adventure. He is also figuring out that it is ok to just lay on a bed and play with a toy while being loose in the house and that he doesn’t have to be playing with his sisters or being outside the whole time.

Heath attended a lot of Christmas gatherings and wore his snoopy sweater to college and to outdoor events. He participated in our family photo shoot and went to the down town Christmas tree lighting and got to experience fake snow which was just a bubble maker and when it was time to decorate the Christmas tree he was a great helper and model of Christmas decor.

Heath has had a lot of fall and winter adventures, we rode and bus to go see an air show and the planes and people had no affect on him. While we were there he watched the planes take off and fly in the air as well as meet a lovely group of police men there at the event. He went to a trunk or treat event later that month and walked beautifully while ignoring the candy and children in costumes. He attended a NMSU outdoor live music event and even went to the pumpkin patch and rode a tractor. He likes to be a goof ball and roll around while playing with toys but he also finds it really easy to fall asleep and settle in all kinds of places.

On September 22nd, 2023 we attended the NM Volunteer Appreciation and Puppy Workshop where we had people come from California to talk to us about the company and to teach us a few things about training our puppies. It was really fun, informative, and Heath got to play with a bunch of other puppies at a get together afterwards. He then was at the point where he could attend college classes with me. He would stay in his place and would even stay by my seat when I would get up to go give a presentation to the class. We then celebrated his 1st Birthday and he even had a little doggies iced cookie as his birthday cake, he was such a good boy he even wore his birthday top hat to classes later that day.

On July 7th, 2023 we were able to attend a puppy class in Albuquerque and even tho it took him a while to ignore the other dogs he did really well with his surroundings and the noise in the mall. Heath then started going on more outings like malls, kids jumping places, church, the BMX track and even a NMSU tabling event with a lot of noise as well as other peoples houses to help him learn to adjust and listen in new places. He even started going to doctor appointments and meetings where he would be very still and quiet. He started the habit of carrying his bone in his mouth like a cigar and he would also vocalize when he wanted to play with us but was being ignored.

Shortly after my first hip surgery Heath would go on trips with my mom to the store and accompany me to physical therapy appointments. After I would stand and walk for a while we took Heath on a day adventure in El Paso, he got to ride in an elevator, look down from a glass balcony, and try on some doggy hats. During the summer he went to McDonalds play places to work on watching little kids and the different noises and smells. We even got to be poolside and watch some kids play.

When it was time for a family vacation back east Heath took his own adventure to Albuquerque as it would be hard for my mom to manage two young boys and myself during the trip. While in Albuquerque he got to work on some commands like jump and up as well as play with friends and he even had his first time swimming in a pool. He was so tired when we picked him up that he slept for most of the car ride and settled very nicely in restaurants and when we got back at home.

It’s been a long while my friends and I haven’t been able to keep this page up to date as much as I would like to, with family members passing and myself having two hip surgeries life has been a little hectic for getting on social media. Regardless I’m back and Heath is doing very well. Over the next few weeks I will be posting a little update on Heath with videos in the comments and pictures for you all to see to catch you up on the time that has passed.

Heath has been attending more outings and working on staying in one position for a longer duration before getting up. He has been chilling at the house on his bed, going to church, BMX races, and swim class. He started and has just completed his first set of training classes. The other day we attended swim class and encountered a great learning opportunity as there was a service dog there, he was able to lay nicely and ignore the other dog.

In addition, we went to the Farmers Market and walked in large crowds around other dogs who wanted to greet him, he stayed focused and maintained a loose leash during walking. Finally, afterwards we went to the park to do some duck and people watching.

Today’s adventure was traveling to Albuquerque, NM for a pre-opt appointment and getting together for a play date with Betsy Knight and her change of career Zaldi and future service dog Bosque. We were also joined by Sharon and her future service dog Tex. In addition we did a little training and Heath worked with a large amount of stairs and lost another tooth.

Heath joined us on our Spring Break adventures. He had a lot of experience with new noises and different environments. He went to White Sands, National Monument, the Alamogordo Space Museum, a Jumping Park, Deming, and multiple malls. Very proud of this Boy!

Heath received his full vaccines on 2/10/23 and has been accompanying me on small outings such as Anime Club, NSLS Orientation, Choir/Band Concert, Swim/Ninja Class and Outings with friends. Each time he settles in quicker than the last and get practice with ignoring and greeting people at the proper time in the proper manner.

As many of you know having a young puppy takes up a lot of time and with my spring semester of college starting I have been delayed in updating everyone, so 20 days later here is the next update! Heath has been getting along really well with our previous pets and they play well together. Heath did well with his second vet visit and is now a good and healthy 25.4 lbs.

He’s been doing well with commands and we are currently working on duration in the sit, down, and bed commands. He is also doing well at staying loose around the house and not getting into anything. He still needs more work with the gentle leader as he try’s to remove it every so often but I know we’ll get there. Thankfully, all of my professors don’t mind having Heath attend class with me once he is old enough and ready to brave the challenges of a college campus. He’s also got the weirdest sleeping positions 😂!

On 12/30/22 Heath had his first vet visit. He fell asleep in my lap while waiting for the doctor, during his shots he behaved and did not move or notice that they were treating him. He ended up leaving the vet with a gift baggie that he had been given a new toy which he loves!

For the past few days starting on 12/26/22 Heath has been practicing playing with a leash on, cradling, sleeping in peoples laps and when they’re not available he ops for his platypus, and finally he has been learning how to wear his cape and gentle leader during feeding and training sessions! He is also making good progress with his commands!

This holiday season Heath has attended many family holiday gatherings. During these gatherings he gets to greet many different family members after they have washed their hands to keep him safe. During these gatherings he stays in his exert pen to play and then to his crate to help him feel safe and secure. He has even started to join in the Christmas Spirit by helping wrap presents 🎁!
