Breeders: Interested in helping build a breeding foundation in Nevada? Then consider Broodmares for Nevada and sires in states that enable dual eligibility. Nevada is a drop state, so those who have sires they may wish to promote, contact us at [email protected] to let us know your interest. A member of our team will reach out to you as time permits.

For Immediate Release
January 21, 2021
Nevada Standardbred Association, Inc. Announcement
Horse Racing Approved in Nye County, Nevada

Las Vegas, NV – January 21, 2021 – Wednesday, January 20th was an important day for horse racing in Nevada, as the Nye County Commission approved horse racing by a vote of 5 to 0. The approval related to zoning issues of a quarter horse racetrack that has been serving as a training center since 1995, in Pahrump. The track is approved for non-betting races only.

T.J. Bohannon, President of the Nevada Standardbred Association (NVSA), was a significant contributor during open community comment and spoke to the integrity and safety of horse racing and compliance from governing bodies such as the United States Trotting Association (“USTA”), and the American Quarter Horse Association (“AQHA”). He also spoke of the economics related to having horse racing with a focus on jobs, education and the multi-stream revenue sources.

What does this mean for the NVSA? Through this approval, it helps pave the way for future approvals for pari-mutuel racing in Pahrump/Nye County. Additionally, support by the NVSA for our horse racing brethren not only promotes our sport but builds relationships for future partnering opportunities as we promote pari-mutuel racing, equine education, and breeding programs.
Nye County has many activities including a top motorsports track, balloon festival, hiking and recreational areas, Area 51 (and the Extraterrestrial Highway), OHV courses and regional wineries. For those not familiar with Pahrump, it is a rural/bedroom community, and largest Nye County town (unincorporated) which is approximately 35 miles from Las Vegas and 1 hour from the Las Vegas Strip. The trip is like traveling Scioto Downs to the Little Brown Jug at Delaware County Fairgrounds.

The NVSA, a Nevada not-for-profit corporation that promotes and supports Harness Racing, Standardbred breeding and development programs, as well as Equine Education in Nevada. The NVSA also assists racetrack start-ups and represents members in negotiations. The NVSA recommends rule changes and regulations and works with related organizations to further the Standardbred industry.

To watch the public messaging back and forth with the USTA and Jeff Gural is painful. On one hand there's the Reputation Risk of not agreeing with the Horse Racing Integrity Act of 2019. On the other the content in the HRIA 2019 doesn't address known differences between breeds, is incomplete and lacks key information such as leadership, frequency and timing, relevant cost appropriations between breeds, and international impacts. HRIA 2019 also assumes that a governing body similar to the Olympics exists in its consistency, which due to states rights, does not.

Bottom-line, compliance is good, risk management, in the form of reputation risk is good, too. Through NVSA President, TJ Bohannon, we have recommended taking a risk management, internal controls and compliance approach to the problem. This approach works well in regulated industries like ours, financial institutions and others.

This focus takes a risk based approach to the issues of the day as well as sustainable controls. It is debatable that sufficient controls exist to prevent and detect all compliance issues. However, through education and solid framework, we can help improved the integrity of our industry and more importantly protect the horses that fuel our lives. Helping ensure the safety of our livestock, and in many cases our four legged equine friends, is paramount to success.

After all, good governance is good governance!

Condolences to the family and friends of Pleasant Batson Jr., aged 84. His longevity to the world of harness supplies and his leather work was a gift to the world.
