It has been a little over one year since I put my own business endeavors aside to take the job as manager of the city animal shelter.
My goal was to help get things set up so the animals in the city shelter would have the best chance possible at finding homes and receieving the care they need.
Needless to say, it has been a hell of a year and I will continue my efforts as manager of the shelter, but I am also gearing up to revisit my goals for this business.

My hope is to get The Big Picture back up and running as soon as I can.

I will be offering a broader scope of services to our community, such as:
Pet boarding & sitting
Pet training
Pet care education for kids
Lost Dog Recovery services
Etc

My specialty is fearful/feral dogs, as that is where my passion truly lies, but I want to make sure I offer a wider range of options to support the pet owners in my community. There is clearly very little options for people in our area for pet sitting/boarding, training, etc.

While services will not be available immediately, I would like to announce that The Big Picture will reopening as soon as I am able to get some things in order so that I may pursue this.

With that being said, be on the lookout for updates on my page in the coming months. ๐Ÿค—

Ohji has officially learned to wait at the car door when we are getting ready to load up. I can get myself situated without worrying he will run off. He can hear lots of barking across the street and while he will turn to look, he knows that whatever is going on is not his problem.

One of the coolest things about working with dogs who are extremely shut down is watching them open up and gain confidence. These dogs don't always know how to go about interacting with people, so they do some silly stuff.
Teshawn wants to play but isn't quite sure how to invite me to play with him, so he play bows and then sits in front of me like this, waiting to see how I respond.

When this guy got to the shelter, he would cower in the corner when people were around. He was completely terrified and shut down. He is a really sweet dog.

Trust takes time to build when working with a fearful/feral dog. Without trust, we have nothing.
Ohji can relax around large groups of people because he trusts me and trusts that I will not put him in bad situations. I could not be happier with the progress he has made since he arrived at the AWC shelter two years ago.

Learning to walk on a leash can be scary. Thankfully, Gemini looks to humans for reassurance, so teaching him to trust the leash was easy.

This guy is a huge teddy bear. โค

DID YOU KNOW?
Just because puppies can eat on their own, does not mean they are old enough to be away from mom?

Not only do puppies depend on their mother for food until their teeth arrive, they depend on their mothers to teach them how to be dogs and how to take care of themselves.
A puppy's mother and it's siblings help teach basic manners, cleanliness, and polite play. They learn how to make decisions and learn consequences for their actions from interacting with their mother and littermates.
When a puppy is separated from it's litter too soon, major behavior problems can arise. Nipping/biting, resource guarding, and aggression toward other dogs are just a few problems that can present themselves as the puppy gets older.

Getting a new puppy is exciting and we all want to bring in our new member of the family as soon as possible, but it is SO important to give litters the time they need with their mother. Ideally, a puppy should not be taken away from it's litter until at least 8 weeks of age.

If your dog is having puppies, or you are looking to bring a puppy into your family, do your part in making sure the puppy has gotten the time it needs to learn all the valuable lessons that mom has to teach. Do your part to ensure the puppy can grow up with the skills it needs to be a safe pet for it's family.

ATTENTION Pet Parents!

A chemical used in Milk-Bones, Olโ€™Roy, Kibblesโ€™n Bits, Hillโ€™s Pet Food and other pet foods should no longer be considered safe for consumption due to concerns about its ability to damage DNA according to a new animal-model study.

According to the Environmental Working Group: โ€œA scientific panel created by the European Food Safety Authority found that titanium dioxide โ€œcan no longer be considered as safe when used as a food additive.โ€ The panel, citing concerns about titanium dioxideโ€™s genotoxicity, or its ability to damage DNA, based its conclusion on a review of hundreds of scientific studies. EWG called on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to quickly consider whether to ban titanium dioxide from use in food."

A chemical that may damage our pet's DNA should not be fed to pets.

Titanium dioxide is on The Forever Dogโ€™s Dirty Dozen list of additives you need to avoid in your pet food. www.ForeverDog.com/about
