There's nothing quite like seeing the pure joy on your pup's face as they paddle through the cool waters. Swimming is not only a fantastic way to beat the heat, but it's also an essential exercise for dogs, keeping them active and healthy. Soaking up the sun and making a splash creates an even stronger bond and memories that will last forever!

There’s a strange asymmetry I see over and over: Dogs engaging in all manner of poor behavior—from the annoying to the truly dangerous—and owners who are more concerned about hurting the dog’s feelings, or making them sad, than they are with ensuring that they the owners aren’t compromised, saddened, stressed, anxious, or even injured. It’s a strange, dysfunctional, and unhealthy world where we as owners place ourselves so low on the priority list, and our dogs so high.

Is there much difference between dysfunctional, unhealthy, abusive human-human relationships? Of course many of the dynamics are different, but far too many are the same. The allowances, the excuses, the rationalizations, the justifications. At the end of the day it still comes down to allowing others to compromise you because you’re not willing to stand up for yourself, value yourself, and draw the line. And while it’s definitely more complicated with human-human dynamics, that should be good news for sorting the dog-human dynamic.

Dogs are amazing. They’re also incredibly opportunistic. And if the “right” dog comes across the “right” human, pain, suffering, and problems will occur. It’s up to you to reset the priorities. It’s up to you to value yourself over the concern of hurting your dog’s feelings. We’ve become so disabled in this regard that the shear volume of struggling owners, and terribly behaved dogs grow daily. And while we continue to see dogs as angelic creatures, capable of only good, and ourselves as less than, and therefore deserving of less, this dysfunctional, sad, and unnecessary dynamic will play on.

🎆HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY 🇺🇸

💥Training can truly benefit a dog who’s fearful of fireworks and other loud noises. Fearfulness is common in dogs and can quickly turn into a “fight or flight” response when they’re not managed correctly. They can easily hurt themselves or get lost in these moments. Don’t let your dog be fearful or anxious, hire a professional dog trainer to help you learn how to successfully help them gain confidence and overcome their fears.

✨We work with dogs of any age, size, breed and temperament. Our main goal is keeping dogs in happy homes and out of shelters. 🏡💕

🎇FIREWORK SAFETY TIPS🎆

1. Keep Your Dog Away From Fireworks
“First of all, don’t take your dogs to fireworks shows,” says Morgan. “And don’t leave them outside during fireworks.” Keeping your dog inside on the evening in question is the best idea, especially if you fear they might not react well.

2. Make Sure Your Pet Has Proper ID
Ensure that the information on your pet’s collar is current and make sure your dog is microchipped and has a GPS device. “If they escape, there’s a better chance they’ll get returned,” says Morgan.

3. Create a Safe Haven For Your Dog
Morgan recommends creating a place where your dog will (hopefully) feel comfortable. “You should get your pet used to a calming environment beforehand. Dogs are den animals — they’re looking for that cave to get away from it all.”

Try setting up an area in a quiet space away from windows — such as a basement or a larger closet — so that they can’t hear or see fireworks. Use a crate if that’s where your dog feels safe, and make sure to provide your pup with familiar toys and treats (Morgan will freeze bone broth in ice cube trays).

4. Play White Noise
You can try leaving a fan, TV, or radio on to help mask the sounds of the fireworks. “There’s some classical music called ‘Through a Dog’s Ear’ that has been shown to have calming effects for dogs,” says Jenn Stanley, certified behavior consultant and professional dog trainer, and co-owner of Awesome Pawsabilities Pet Training & Behavior Consultations, based in North Carolina.

5. Comfort Your Dog
If you can, try staying home with your dog or leaving them in the hands of a trusted person. One of Morgan’s relatives usually stays with her dog in the closet to help soothe the animal.

“You absolutely can and should comfort your dog if he’s afraid,” says Stanley. “The key here is in how you do so. It’s important to remain calm and use a soothing, even tone. Petting them can be comforting — long, slow, firm strokes along the length of their body are typically very soothing.”

The one thing to avoid? Seeming frantic in any way, says Stanley. Rapidly saying, “It’s OK, it’s OK, it’s OK” in a higher-than-average pitch may make your dog think that there really is something to fear. Try your best to remain calm and reassuring to help your canine companion.

6. Walk Them Before the Fireworks Start
Head out for your long walk before the sun sets to increase the chances that you’ll avoid the sounds. When you do go out, you’ll want to ensure your dog is secure on a leash before your walk.

“Double-check the fit of your dog’s collar or harness before going outside. A leash, even if you have a fenced-in area, is a great added safety measure to help keep your dog close to you and under control should they get startled,” says Stanley.

7. Desensitize Your Dog to the Sounds of Fireworks
If you suspect your dog will freak out at the sound of fireworks, try playing sounds of fireworks (softly) so your dog is used to hearing them. Try pairing a video of the sounds of fireworks with a treat your dog likes, suggests Stanley, in a process called counter-conditioning.

“The volume should be low enough that your dog can notice it, but does not show signs of stress like panting, pacing, leaving the area, or trying to hide,” says Stanley. “We call this keeping the dog ‘below threshold,’ and it makes it possible for learning to take place. If the dog is overwhelmed, they’re looking to escape the situation and are not going to be nearly as capable of learning that it’s not a threat.” Her other tips including increasing the volume gradually, varying the source of the sound, and using different recordings.

8. Talk to Your Vet
If your pet’s anxiety is severe, consider booking an appointment with your vet well in advance of the holiday so you can discuss a medication that could help soothe your dog’s anxiety. “If you have a dog that is bad enough and you haven’t done any prep work, and you know your pet is going to be in panic, try true therapeutic treatment,” says Morgan. You can also ask about trying over-the-counter CBD, dog-calming treats or dog anxiety vests.

9. Consider Hiring a Trainer
If fear is negatively impacting your pup’s life, consider enlisting the expertise of a trainer, says Stanley. “You can work with a trainer or behavior consultant to desensitize your dog to fireworks or other fears gradually — it’s never too soon to start planning for next year.”

✨CLIENT TESTIMONIAL✨

“We adopted Loki in December 2021; he was 7 weeks old. We were not able to start training with him as soon as we had hoped due to family issues, but we were trying to get the basics in sit, don’t, no, off. In October 2022 along came Lucy. We were told that she was 3 months old and was saved from an abusive situation. She had been beaten, attacked by other dogs, and thrown in the backyard to fend for herself. The people would throw food out there for her and the other dogs to fight over. We felt so bad we knew we needed to save her, and we brought her home. She weighed 23lbs and was 6 months old not 3. She was very small, bony, and scared. She barked and snapped at people; she did not warm up right away. She was in constant fight mode. We had no idea what this poor girl had been through, but by her actions we could tell it was not good. When we walked her, she would try attacking cars and people. She was out of control. In the beginning Loki and Lucy seemed to get along really well. Loki is a very easy going dog and really liked her. He wanted to play all the time. We started noticing that Lucy was not playing like normal puppies. She was attacking Loki. She was blocking the door for him to come inside, and she would chase and bite him if he got too close. Sometimes she would just run at him and bite him unprovoked. Loki was in flight mode, he wanted to stay away from her. He would hide and cower in the corner. He would run from her and try to go to one of us to protect him. He had bite marks all over his face and body all the time. Lucy was so sweet when Loki was not around. We decided at that point to separate them unless we were with them. We put up gates, used tables and other things to block doorways. It was not an ideal situation. If Lucy even heard Loki she would freak out and start trying to break out and get him. It got to the point where we did not think they we would ever be able to have them in the same room. We could not have people over, because Lucy would constantly bark and snap at them. We were heartbroken and felt defeated. We did not want to give up on this little girl but had to think of what was best for us and our other pets. We started looking to rehome Lucy. After discussing this decision at our vet’s office, the staff recommended calling Lindsey with Lorenzo’s, they said her, and her team were great and would be able to help us. I was hesitant because I had lost all hope, but I called, and we scheduled a meeting. What could it hurt?
Lindsey, Ally, and Ashton came to our home. Lucy barked for most of the consultation, we had to talk over her barking. Lindsey did some training with Lucy to get her to stop barking, Lucy stopped, she followed directions. I was shocked. I actually cried because that was the moment, I knew there was hope. I never thought in a million years that Lucy would submit and she did. I knew at that moment that we were going to be able to keep her and we would be able to take the gate down.
Ashton trained Lucy and Ally trained Loki. Ashton took Lucy for two weeks and Ally trained Loki at our home. We all had some work to do. I never thought it would take me so long to learn how to hold a leash properly. We took this training very seriously and we still are. We did train with Lucy and Loki together while Lucy was still doing her 2 weeks with Ashton, and I could see a difference at that session. The first day Lucy was home, her and Loki laid together on the couch and napped. Both were very relaxed, I was shocked. Ashton did such a great job with Lucy and Ally was so good with Loki. Loki shuts down very quickly and Ally was right on top of that to get him to perk back up. I have learned so much from Ashton and Ally. They are very patient and helped us remember commands, how to hold the leash, and helped us feel more confident. I cannot even begin to tell you how grateful I am for them. We still have a long way to go, but now we have the proper tools to help us get there. We still monitor the dogs together to make sure Lucy does not revert to attack mode, but I have no doubt that will not happen. Loki has some food aggressions that we have worked on, and things are so much more relaxed. We take Lucy and Loki on regular walks together and they do so well. Truly amazing, we did 8 weeks of training. These dogs have completely transformed.
During the consultation visit Lindsey asked me what my hopes were for Lucy, and I just really wanted her to be happy and relaxed and know we are not giving up on her. For Loki it was not to be in hiding and get attacked. Also, to stop being food aggressive. Most of all I just wanted both dogs to be able to be in the same room with us, watching TV and relaxing. We have that now!
Thank you so much Ally, Ashton, and Lindsey from the bottom of our hearts!”
Pam, William, Loki, and Lucy

🧤Retrieval training is an amazing way to give our dogs a job to focus on. Retrieving different objects from different heights and surfaces as well as holding and carrying an item for a long period of time. It is great for working dogs, anxious dogs, shy dogs, hyperactive dogs etc. Any breeds and personalities. We start off with teaching them the foundation with a glove and the owners can introduce them to new items as they advance.🐾
