If you have ever wondered why some dogs are afraid of the vacuum cleaner, this will help you to understand. Dogs have a very keen sense of hearing, much better then humans. The vacuum produces a very high frequency sound, which is extremely loud to a dog compared to what we are hearing. This can frighten or annoy some dogs. Dog trainers deal with this with a lot of their clients’ dogs. This can easily be avoided if very young puppies are exposed to typical everyday sounds they will encounter when they grow up. We should not be sheltering young puppies so much, but allow them to experience real life, and of course taking it slow, a little at a time. It is best to let dogs figure things out for themselves and not interfere or force them into doing something they are not yet comfortable doing. In this video, we placed the vacuum in the middle of the room with the motor off at first. The puppies were then brought in the room. We turned the motor on and you can see how the puppies didn’t quite know what to do, and they all reacted a little differently. By exposing young puppies to this a few minutes each day, any fear or anxiety will soon slip away as the sound and also the movement becomes familiar. It will still bother their hearing and they should have the opportunity to leave the room to get further away from it if they prefer.
