As the temperatures continue to climb, we want to remind all pet owners about the importance of safeguarding your pets from the intense heat. โ˜€๏ธ

Unlike us humans, our beloved pets cannot shed their fur or always seek out cooler locations when the temperature rises. Moreover, they do not perspire in the same way we do, making it harder for them to regulate their body temperature. This can lead to a dangerous condition known as heatstroke.

To aid you in protecting your pets, here is an infographic that offers information on how to recognize signs of heatstroke in your pet, prevention strategies, and the necessary actions to take if your pet shows symptoms of heatstroke.โœ…

Please stay alert and keep your furry friends safe this season.

Welcome to our newest extern, Brooke!

Originally from Connecticut, Brooke developed her love for animals at a young age, surrounded by a variety of pets including Australian shepherds, cats, chickens, fish, a horse, guinea pigs, and otterhounds. This early interaction with animals, particularly horses, grew into a deep-rooted interest that she pursued academically.

Brooke's dedication to animal welfare was evident in her high school years when she volunteered at an equine retirement farm and a dog shelter. Her commitment to animal care continued into her undergraduate years. She took on multiple roles including an internship at Connecticut Beardsley Zoo where she worked with hoof stock, giant anteaters, wolves, and even assisted in butterfly research. She also worked at a pet store, a mixed animal practice, an emergency room, and a small animal general practice, often juggling two or three jobs while maintaining her studies.

Brooke earned degrees in Equine Science and Biology from Post University in Connecticut. It was during her sophomore year that she decided to further pursue veterinary medicine.

Brooke is currently studying at Mississippi State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and is set to graduate in May 2025.

This is Brooke's first time in Las Vegas, and sheโ€™s excited to visit a local punk rock museum during her stay. During her externship, she is keen on gaining more experience with avian patients and she holds a particular interest in exotic companion mammals like rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs.

In her free time, Brooke enjoys horseback riding, visiting coffee shops, and reading. She also loves spending time with her two dogs: Maple, a Pitbull, and Kenai, an Otterhound.

Welcome to our newest extern, Hope!

Born and raised in Iowa, Hope developed a lifelong passion for animals, despite not having any pets as a child. Her interest was sparked at a young age by watching shows on Animal Planet.

During high school, Hope was a dedicated athlete, but her dream of becoming a veterinarian never wavered. She attended Northwest Missouri State University for her undergraduate studies, and it was during this time that she shadowed at a veterinary clinic. One day, just as the clinic was about to close, the clinicโ€™s cat was attacked by a dog. Hope assisted in saving the cat and treating its injured leg. This incident confirmed her love for veterinary medicine and reassured her that she was on the right career path.

Hope is currently a student at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, anticipating graduation in May 2026.

During her externship, sheโ€™s looking forward to hands-on experience with exotic animals and learning more about interpreting blood and liver work.

In her spare time, Hope likes playing video games, hanging out with friends, and listening to music. Although she doesnโ€™t have any pets at the moment, she dreams of owning a snake someday.

Welcome to our newest extern, Lindsay!

Lindsay, originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has always had a deep-rooted love for animals. Growing up, she had a variety of pets, including dogs, cats, reptiles, turtles, lizards, and snakes.

During her high school years, Lindsay worked for four years at a small zoo called Tobias Wildlife Park in Central Pennsylvania. This experience, in particular her work in the reptile building, solidified her desire to work with animals.

Lindsay attended Millersville University in Pennsylvania, where she was a member of the zoology club and worked as a peer mentor. During her undergraduate studies, she conducted research on birds and environmental toxins, and had the opportunity to work with lab animals. This exposure to the healthcare side of animal care inspired Lindsay to shadow at a small clinic in Central Pennsylvania, where she continued to work during summers while attending veterinary school.

Currently, Lindsay is currently attending the University of Pennsylvania College of Veterinary Medicine and is expected to graduate in May 2025.

Lindsay is interested in exotic animals and is eager to hone her surgical skills and proficiency in ultrasounds during this externship.

In her free time, Lindsay enjoys reading, hiking, painting, and drawing. She also cherishes time spent with her pets, a Doberman named Zooko, a German Shepherd named Zoe, a ball python named Cash, and a leopard gecko named Thanos.

Welcome to our newest extern, Keishla!

Keishla, originally from Puerto Rico, had a love for animals at a young age, growing up with many dogs including Labs and a Husky. This passion was further fueled by watching nature documentaries and shows on Animal Planet, leading her to a particular interest in wildlife and conservation.

Before Keishla even knew what a vet was, she was certain she wanted to work with animals. This aspiration was reinforced through her high school math and science classes, and followed her into her undergraduate studies where she majored in Biology at the University of Puerto Rico. During her time there, she joined the pre-vet club and volunteered at a clinic near her home.

Keishla was accepted into Purdue University's veterinary school, located in Indiana, through the Vet Up summer program, which offers a crash course on what veterinary school is like to minority students. Keishla has always had an interest in exotics and has externed at two zoos and a wildlife center, gaining significant hands-on experience.

She has an expected graduation of May 2024.

Keishla is passionate about giving back to her community and making a change in the world, especially regarding exotic animals and wildlife.

During this externship, Keishla is looking forward to enhancing her surgical skills and learning from different doctors to compare techniques. She values mentorship and finds being a mentor herself incredibly rewarding. In her spare time, she enjoys napping, watching shows and movies, playing video games, going to the gym, and spending time with friends. She has a traveling cat named Nube, an older dog named Scooby, and two brown Labs named Hershey and Bear.

Did you know that heartworm disease, a serious and potentially fatal condition, is found in all states across the U.S., including Nevada?

Welcome to our newest extern, Maria!

Originally from Puerto Rico, Mariaโ€™s journey is a testament to grit and perseverance. Inspired by her older sister, a practicing doctor, she initially contemplated a career in human medicine. But her childhood, filled with the companionship of dogs, cats, and her father's cockatiels, led her heart towards a different path - veterinary medicine.

Her educational journey took her to the University of Puerto Rico, where she earned her undergraduate degree. Here, she had the opportunity to be part of research with the Caribbean Primates Research Center which was a life-changing experience. However, a defining moment in her life came when her dog, Mimi, had a pyometra. Maria's involvement in Mimi's treatment process deepened her desire to work with animals, confirming her decision to pursue veterinary medicine.

Despite English being her second language and still trying to adjust to a different culture, Maria's determination never faltered and she continued to push forward. She is currently studying at Tuskegee University's College of Veterinary Medicine, with her expected graduation in May 2024.

Maria has always aspired to serve as a beacon for her community, aiming to inspire others who share her roots. She believes in the power of representation and hopes to encourage more people from her background to explore and succeed in the field of veterinary medicine.

During this externship, Maria is excited to gain hands-on experience and further refine her skills. She is also excited about exploring Las Vegas. She has already made trips to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam, and she looks forward to discovering more of what the city has to offer.

In her spare time, she delves into a variety of interests. She loves beach days and discovering new places to eat. She also enjoys hiking and spending quality time in nature. But nothing tops her list of favorite pastimes like spending time with her dog, Kenai.
