Cats benefit from, and love the opportunity to climb and access elevated locations. This instinctual behavior is important for their well-being because being on a higher vantage point allows them to survey their environment safely. In addition to always having the option to hide, the option to retreat to an elevated location for fearful or nervous cats, offers a sense of security.
In a multicat household, use vertical space to help contribute to feline harmony. The higher-ranking cat may choose elevated levels as a display of status, reducing the likelihood of confrontations, or a nervous kitty may choose an elevated location to prevent being ambushed. This strategic use of space may prevent, or at least reduce squabbles, and promote a more peaceful coexistence.

Cats may bite people for various reasons. Addressing the problem effectively, or better yet, preventing it from happening in the first place, starts with identifying the underlying cause. When a cat is very agitated or displaying aggression, the best thing to do is provide quiet space so kitty can find a place that feels safe. If you attempt to comfort, pet, or hold your cat, you may end up being the target of redirected aggression. Also, don't punish your cat for displaying aggression. When a cat shows aggressive behavior it means the cat is either frightened, in pain, feels threatened, or communication signals indicating no desire to interact have been ignored.

Scruffing has been a common practice in cat handling for a long time. It’s the method of cat restraint most veterinary professionals were originally taught. Scruffing is where the cat is grasped by the loose skin on the back of the neck. Even though this restraining technique has been widely used ...

When a cat eliminates outside of the litter box, it's because there's a problem. One of the most common reasons for litter box aversion is due to an underlying medical problem. It's critical to rule medical issues out before assuming the problem is behavioral. Have your cat checked by the veterinarian. Never skip that step.

Another common reason for litter box aversion is due to unappealing or uncomfortable litter box conditions. Is the box not scooped and cleaned often enough? Is the box too small? Is it a covered box? If your cat is a senior, is the box too difficult to step into? Take time to identify what needs to improved with the litter box set-up.

Finally, household dynamics could be the issue. Is there tension between cats in a multicat home? Is your home chaotic? Does your cat feel scared to be in the box? Is it located in an area where a cat has to cross another cat's path, or maybe encounter the dog? Is it separation anxiety? It's time to take a look at what might be happening in your cat's world that's causing stress, fear, or confusion.

You can find more information on litter box issues in my books, but please, start by talking with your veterinarian.

Baby, it's cold outside...

To help cats stay as safe as possible in the cold weather, keep them inside if they live with you. Make sure that you pound on the hood of your car and/or honk the horn before starting the engine to avoid harming cats that may be seeking warmth under the hood or in the wheel wells and do the same before starting a tractor or enclosed generator. While controversial in some places, providing food, shelter, and access to water for stray/feral cats can also help them through periods when the thermometer drops.

Despite their best intentions, pet owners can mistake what their cats want and need based on their own beliefs about feline preferences, rather than what’s actually fulfilling and desirable from the cat’s point of view. Research revealed that when it comes to feline urinary issues, it is more than just about the bladder. There is a connection between the urinary recurrences and stress.

The cats who are most susceptible are the ones who are more nervous, fearful, and sensitive in general. It is believed these cats have an abnormal stress response system. They startle more easily than other cats and stay hyper alert. As a result of cats remaining in stress alert, systems of the body (immune, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and so on) are affected and that sets the cats up for various illnesses. It’s not unusual for cats with Pandora Syndrome to also exhibit other sickness behaviors such as loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, etc.

All About Lisa

As you might guess, Lisa, the creator of All About Purrs, loves cats! She is passionate about caring for them, and their health and well-being as well.

Lisa was raised on a ranch in Northern California where she loved and cared for many different animals; however, she has always had a particular fondness for cats. She discovered at a young age she had an innate ability to connect with felines–to communicate with them and to understand their individual differences and needs.

Lisa has a special place in her heart for our rescue friends as well. She recognizes that they need their space and gives them time to warm to her so a trust builds that can last a lifetime.

Lisa had been pet sitting part-time for friends and family for 10 years in Las Vegas before making it a full-time business in February 2013 after being laid off from the Nevada Cancer Institute. This was the purrfect time to turn her love for animals into a business in which she could assist others with their pet care needs while also fulfilling her passion for animals.
