Harold, our President Ashley Arellanes, and myself (Sara Jo Mathews) attended and spoke at a meeting between the Governing bodies of the City of Las Vegas, and San Miguel County, NM.

Harold and his heartbreaking story of suffering are all to common in our community. Today the discussion of a JOINT POWERS entity has brought forward. It will be a long road to acquiring funding, building a new shelter, adopting laws and policies, but it's a start.

People of Las Vegas and San Miguel County....
KEEP FIGHTING, KEEP PUSHING.

As Mayor Romero stated today
"What we are currently doing is not working."

We have their attention.
We will keep fighting for the voiceless.
We encourage you do the same.

Say hello to McCoy! Formerly known as Loki

McCoy was once a resident of the Las Vegas Animal Care Center. Through Prairie Hill Cafe and a handful of devoted volunteers he was quickly adopted to a wonderful home in South Carolina after he was featured on our Sunday Adoption Event.

Soon after transport and making it to his new home, his owner took him to a veterinarian for a routine wellness check. Immediately it was discovered that McCoy had most likely been hit by a car and had a healed pelvic fracture and a traumatic hip luxation. This dog had been in pain and no medical treatment was ever rendered. After many discussions with the veterinarian it turns out medical costs for McCoy would be is $2,931.00.

There’s a lot to be angry about here and I think it’s fair that we’re honest about the situation. There was little to no response from the Animal Care Center about covering medical expenses on a newly adopted dog. We’re not sure which veterinarian cleared him to be adopted. The mayor, finance director and chief of police met with us to see if there was a way to help with his medical costs but it can’t be covered due to the anti donation clause. Which in turn leaves an almost three thousand dollar bill on someone who went out of her way to adopt a dog from our community. There’s only two choices here, either the dog is euthanized so it’s no longer suffering and in pain, or we pay the vet fees because nobody else will.

Our group discussed this heavily and decided to take in this responsibility. But furthermore we want people to know the truth behind the work we’re doing. Is it fair? No. But our intent has always been to step up when we’re needed most.

We’ll be raising money to help replenish the funds we’re putting up for McCoy. We hope you’ll help us continue our work as Animal Advocates of Northern NM.

Harold.

He was picked up from one of the many trailer parks in our community where dogs run at large to get hit by cars or killed by one another (Enchanted Hills).

He's covered in sun damage, you can tell at one point he was a little pink Chihuahua, but now his broken little body is covered in scars and wounds, some old, some new. He has no teeth, at one point he had a broken pelvis which went untreated. He was living outside and it's truly a miracle he's made it this long.

The vet suspects he has cancer and we are hoping for more testing soon. He has known mostly pain and suffering in his life. He came to our group when a lady who had been caring for him and two of his siblings out on the streets was able to catch him. All three dogs are now in our care. Harold doesn't have a lot of time left, but we'd like to get him medical care, and make sure he has some quality of life and not all this time here on earth will be spent suffering. 💔

We will make sure he knows love
till he leaves this earth.

Animal Advocates of Northern NM helps little souls like Harold. Volunteers like myself are often too busy to post every story and honestly some stories are too heartbreaking to share; but we are out here doing our best to change the cycle of suffering.

Help on on our mission to keep caring for the voiceless and assist us in covering Harold's Medical care.

When we started this rescue, our mission was to help the abused, neglected and discarded dogs in our city and beyond.

Our mission has never been to relieve you of you of the commitment YOU made to your dog when you took them in.

People have babies and keep their dogs.

People change careers and keep their dogs.

Peoples schedules get hectic and they keep their dogs.

People move and find a way to keep their dog.

People run into issues with manageable/trainable behavior AND THEY KEEP THEIR DOGS.

These situations are not unique.

We didn't start this rescue to bail you out. I'm sorry, I know that may sound harsh-- and yes, we know that there are absolutely situations in which people can truly no longer care for their dog- and we help with those as much as we can.

But for the love of Dog-- step up for your dog. Show up for your dog. Show your dog the same love and commitment today that you showed them the day you brought them home.

Dogs are being euthanized here, in shelters every single day because the shelter does not have space. FRIENDLY. HEALTHY. HAPPY. ADOPTABLE. DOGS.

Your dog is no different than any of the dogs that have been losing their lives every day and if you give up on your dog-- they could be next.
