National pet dental health month is February but at South Buffalo we care about your pets oral health all year round. As many as 80% of dogs and 70% of cats will have some form of dental disease by the age of 2. Keeping up on oral health can help to give your pet a healthier and longer life. We recommend a dental consult prior to your pets dental cleaning to better asses and provide any answers to questions you might have. Increased dental disease can affect organ function as bacteria from the mouth can travel through the bloodstream, so we require bloodwork within the last 6 months prior to any procedure/dental cleaning and our team is well trained to help keep your pet safe while under anesthesia.

From February 1st- May 31st we offer a complimentary dental consult, $30 off the dental cleaning and a complimentary nail trim.
Please schedule on the Pet Desk App or call and speak with one of our Customer Service Representatives.

Here at SBSAH we have spacious kennels for all sizes and for both our dog and cat family members. While we know you hate to leave your fur babies especially during the holidays we want to ensure you that we are fully equipped to keep them happy, comfortable and healthy while you are away! A few things we would like you to know prior to your boarding reservation during the holidays…

🦃Boarding reservations fill up quickly, we recommend reserving as early as you can.

🦃Make sure your pet is up to date on required vaccines and f***l. Having them up to date on vaccines minimizes risk and helps expidite the check in process. We require all pets be up to date on core vaccines, influenza (k9) and intestinal parasite screen.

🦃 Bring medications, food, and treats for their stay but please leave bowls, blankets, toys and other belongings at home to avoid them getting lost or mixed up.

🦃 We no longer allow raw diets to be fed during boarding. We have a sensitive stomach kibble( Hills Science Diet Sensitive Skin and Stomach) in house if you do not wish to bring food.

🦃A deposit is required upon check-in, feel free to ask about pricing with one of our CSR’s.

🦃 If your pet easily gets stressed during boarding we recommend discussing with one of our veterinarians about ways to reduce stress like utilizing our TLC package, sedatives, probiotics, etc.

🦃 If you have medical concerns about your pet please make sure to let one of our CSR’s know upon check in and a veterinarian can address any concerns while boarding.

🦃 We will be closed Thanksgiving day and Christmas Day and shortened hours on the Eve’s, however we will have staff members there to take care of all boarders and hospitalized pets. Please be mindful of business hours, which will be posted on social media and at the hospital.

Feel free to call the office for any questions or to schedule your pets boarding reservation

🇺🇸🎆Firework celebrations can be a scary time for some pets, so we want to help you prepare for this upcoming American holiday!

🎆 Microchip- if your pet has one make sure your contact info is up to date. If your pet does not have one it is encouraged in case your pet escapes in fear of the fireworks.

🎆 Pheromones/ Music Therapy/ TV- more calming noises and smells to help relax your pet. We recommend “Through a dogs/cats ear” on YouTube and Feliway/Adaptil pheromone spray/collar.

🎆Thunder Jackets- help high your pet just like a weighted blanket to help them feel safe and secure!

🎆Collars and Tags- In case your pet escapes your pets collar should have microchip tag, rabies vaccine tag, +/- GPS tracking tag. These are all great ways to help identify your pet and hope for a safe return back to your family.

🎆 Noise Aversion Medications/Sedatives- now is the time to speak with your Veterinarian about options. We recommend Sileo, Trazadone or in some cases Acepromazine.

For the rest of June we are offering a complimentary exam with consult for firework safety. Schedule your pet on our pet desk app or by calling our office @ 702-333-1770.

The sun is out and we are all about it which means, more outdoor time with our fur babies. Here are 7 tips to keep you and your pet safe from snake bites while out in the desert.

1) Vaccinate your pet! This is a two series vaccine initially then is recommended annually. This vaccine helps buy your pet time and reduces the amount of anti-venom need to save your pets life. You still need to get to a veterinarian immediately if your pet is bit for medical treatment as a rattlesnake bites can be fatal.

2) keep your pet on a leash, no longer than 6ft. This prevents your pet from wandering off to accidentally come across one.

3) Stay on open trails, avoid high brush or rocky areas. Rattlesnakes love to hide in them to stay away from other predators.

4) Snake proof your yard! Snakes can get you in very small spaces fortify your fencing so they can’t get through or under.

5)Know the rattlesnake bite symptoms
If you don’t recognize the symptoms of a rattlesnake bite in your dog, you might delay rushing them to the vet immediately – and that delay could be fatal.

Immediate symptoms almost always include:

puncture wounds (can be bleeding)
severe pain
swelling
restlessness, panting, or drooling
Depending on how much venom the bite injected into your dog, and the size of your dog, any of these more severe symptoms may appear quickly or within a few hours:

lethargy, weakness, sometimes collapse
muscle tremors
diarrhea
seizures
neurological signs including depressed respiration

6) If you encounter a rattlesnake it is important not to provoke or threaten it. Calmly and slowly back away out of striking distance and safely leave the area as there could be others near by. Also rattlesnake aversion training with your pet is a great prevention tool.

7) If your pet gets bit by a rattlesnake it is best to carry them if able to back to the car. The less movement on them the slower the travel of venom through their system. Then get to a veterinarian immediately for the anti-venom injection and other life saving emergency drugs and supportive therapy for a greater chance of survival.

03/26/2023

Today is Epilepsy Awareness Day, while we know it is more about humans, we still want to make aware how more and more pets experience neurological disorders, Epilepsy being one of them! Plus we’ve seen a few cases recently so let’s talk about it!

What is epilepsy? Epilepsy is a disorder in which nerve cell activity in the brain is disturbed, causing seizures. Sometimes we truly don’t know what is causing the seizures and we call that idiopathic epilepsy. Other times we looks at these few causes.

Let’s start with puppies and kitten’s . The number one cause of epilepsy in a young animal is generally due to hypoglycemia (meaning not enough sugar). We recommend immediately placing Nutrical or Karo Syrup on the gums and contacting your veterinarian. Often times it’s a matter of nutritional support but sometimes it can be a genetic anomaly.

Metabolic Disorders like Diabetes, Addison’s Disease, Kidney Disease , Liver Disease, etc all can be a contributing factor as to why your pet may have seizures. For this reason we recommend comprehensive bloodwork with any case that has epilepsy.

Infections like blood borne infections/parasite infections and viruses can lead to epilepsy as well. Leptospirosis, distemper and high overload of intestinal parasites are the more common ones we will see. Again running further diagnostics are necessary to help on finding the root cause of epilepsy. Often times epilepsy is a secondary issue to something underlying.

Brain tumors or brain injuries can cause seizures or odd neurological behaviors. These do have to be diagnosed with an MRI after a proper work up. If your pet has one of these symptoms progress rather rapidly unfortunately.

In any case of seizures a full diagnostic work up is recommended and there are many steps we can take to help manage our neurological pets. At home care may include anticonvulsants, nutritional support, pheromones(collars, sprays to reduce stress),etc. In a consult we will also discuss monitoring length of seizures, how often and what to do to protect your self and your pet from injury during a seizure.

03/10/2023

Spring season is approaching and we will begin to see a lot of pets suffer from seasonal allergies. In the Las Vegas area we see only two season’s, spring and fall really effect our pets. The seasons where plants bloom and die. We also live in a valley (surrounded by mountains) that can create a “dust bowl” when the wind kicks up, which it does often.

Many breeds suffer from allergies however the most common are our Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Pitbulls.

It is important to understand when we have a pet with allergies only 7% of pets treated with immunotherapy are cured of allergies 🤧 the rest are managed. Having an allergy pet means consistent care and working with your veterinarian to come up with the best regimen for your pet. It’s not a one size fits all situation.

If you notice your pet
•Pruritic
•Odorous
•Licking
•Scratching
•Hot Spots
•Watery Eyes
•Ear Infections
•Redness

The sooner you begin treatment the quicker and more comfortable your pet will be! Some pets may give themselves a secondary bacterial or yeast infection from scratching which can lead to more costly treatment.
A few treatment options may include:
•Oral antihistamines, antibiotics, steroids and/or antifungals, depending on severity.
•A Cytopoint injection which helps prevent the urge to itch. •Nutritional support or immunotherapy (testing required).
•Topicals like ointments, creams and sprays.
•Shampoo and Conditioners.

For more information or to see about your pet please schedule a consult with one of our veterinarians to get your pet ready for allergy season.

Schedule through the or by calling 702-333-1770.

03/04/2023

We want to bring awareness to hopefully prevent your pet from ingesting or contacting one of these common toxins that are around the house.

1) Household chemicals- most household chemicals are either irritants or extremely dangerous, please keep chemicals up and away.

2) Plants- there are a lot of plants that may be an irritant if ingested or cause some kind of allergies, but there are a few plants that are common in or around the house that can cause organ disfunction like lillies of the Lillium spp., sago palms, Oleander, lantana etc. Know the plants that are in or around your home, and be cautious if you have a pet that likes to chew on plants, especially cats!

3) Human Medications- Heart medications, thyroid medications, anxiety medications and NSAID’s are common human medications that pets tend to get into. If you or a loved one takes medications it’s wise to keep all medication up and out of reach and be very careful if your pet shows interest while you are grabbing your medications for all they know it could be a treat.

4) Human Foods- Garlic, Onion, Pits/Seeds of certain fruits or vegetables, Chocolate, Grapes etc. all should not be given to your pet. This includes foods that are cooked with it. If your unsure don’t give!

5) Rodentacides- Rat or Mouse poison traps will give your pet a guarded to poor prognosis if not treated and even with treatment. Be extremely cautious if this is around your home. Recommend keeping pets indoor and away.

If your pet ingests or comes in contact with any of these common toxins please contact your veterinarian, the sooner the better! Sometimes decontamination can save your pets life!
