We have recently had some questions from a dog owner about the mysterious canine respiratory illness that seems to have originated from New Hampshire.
According to an article posted by USA Today on December 4th 2023 (today), Nevada is not currently on the list of states that the Veterinary Association have recorded this illness. However, we have done some research and included an article from the National Geographics at the bottom of this post, in case you are interested in learning more about this new disease.
In summary, while scientists are still trying to find out more about this disease, we know that it can be compared to a common cold for humans. And while the vast majority of cases are not deadly and will clear up by itself within 10 days, this disease can cause coughing and sneezing in dogs. Also similar to the common cold for humans, it is resistant to treatments. The latest advice from veterinarians is to make sure that (s)he is up-to-date with the latest vaccinations, including and especially Bordatella. This disease currently only affects dogs, and will not transfer to other animals including humans.
As you have experienced our abundance of caution during the COVID pandemic, we will operate with heightened vigilance against this new disease, and continue to require each dog that come to us to be up-to-date with all vaccinations including and especially Bordatella. Each dog will also have their exclusively assigned kennel during his/her entire stay, which will be sanitized prior to your dog's arrival and again after his/her departure before being reoccupied. We will once again circulate the air within the shop through a HEPA filter during business hours, and change the HEPA filter weekly to maximize efficacy. Curbside check-in will once again be available if this is your preference (please let us know in advance when you make your appointment, and call us at 541-8822 when you arrive).
As always, thank you for trusting us with your furry family member. Here's the article from NatGeo I referred to:
Scientists are making headway in pinpointing the cause of the condition reported in more than a dozen states. Here’s what we know so far about the illness—and how to protect your pet.
