Landmark (our pensioner) out and about
A short ride with Bourbon on the flat. He seems very comfortable with the new tack selection. I'll be using this set up with him from now on.
Free jumping Vaudeville, 2'3. He's finding his feet.

Bourbon
More from Bourbons test fit ride.
Bourbon is an imported German Warmblood, so he is built large and wide with high withers. He can be difficult to fit. The saddle I'm testing on him is a treeless hunter/jumper style.
The new bit is a three piece egbutt snaffle with a center losange. Previously he had been ridden in a Pelham with a curb chain (not by me) because he tends to be strong in the hands.
I'm attempting to soften him up by simply making sure he's comfortable. So far, he had lightened up in the hands quite a bit and was moving freely. It's possible I've figured out the answer. A couple more rides will tell me.

Serpentines with Vaudeville in the big ring
Test fitting new tack on Bourbon. He's a little stiff to the left with his turn on haunches. The right turn on haunches was better. Over all I'm happy with the test ride. I'll ride him again with the new tack to see if he is genuinely more comfortable or if it was just one good ride.
It's winter here in the desert. Even though we do have hot water in the barn for baths, with highs in the 50's it's too cold. My personal solution has always been to train every horse I have ever owned to tolerate the vacuum. Specifically for these cooler winter months.
