You helped us blast through our goal of $4,000 to help pets in need get spayed and neutered. You raised a total of $5,324.74 to celebrate The Romeo Fund's 2nd anniversary. 🐶🐱

33 families will now be able to give their pets a happier, healthier future and combat pet overpopulation and unnecessary euthanasia. 🙏

Students and staff alike contributed and worked hard to raise $1,898.74 to support us in our mission to save lives and keep pets in their loving homes. 🐾 They have been there for us before, and now again. Today we’re honoring Dr. Rosalie A. Reed for Black History Month! 💙 She is a pioneer in veterinary medicine who shattered barriers in the field of exotic animal care. Fun fact: She kept a deadly tarantula in a tank on her desk to conquer her fear! 🕷

Born in 1945 in Mount Vernon, NY, Reed had a natural gift for nurturing animals from a young age. Reed’s mother never knew her daughter to not be caring for an injured animal. ❤️‍🩹 She pursued her passion at Tuskegee University, where she balanced multiple jobs, was a member of the rifle club, and ultimately earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1972. 🩺

Just a year later, she made history by becoming the first woman veterinarian at the Los Angeles Zoo and the first black veterinarian at a major U.S. zoo. Tasked with caring for over 2,600 animals, she performed surgeries, managed diets, and even helped rehabilitate a California condor. 🙌

Dr. Reed’s groundbreaking achievements paved the way for future generations of veterinarians, proving that passion and perseverance can change the world. 🌍 Happy Black History Month! 🎉

Our top priority is the safety and well-being of the animals in our care. Staff availability plays a key role in how many kitties we can safely take in each day. On days with limited intake, it may be due to staff PTO, continuing education, or team coordination - important steps that ensure we can keep providing excellent care!

Meet Dr. Jane Hinton, DVM, a pioneer in veterinary medicine! 🩺🐾

She broke barriers as one of the FIRST two black women to earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in the U.S., graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1949! 🎓 Even before courageously breaking barriers in veterinary care, she co-developed the Mueller-Hinton agar, the unsung hero in testing bacterial resistance to antibiotics! 🔬🦠

From practicing as a small animal vet to safeguarding livestock health as a federal inspector, Dr. Hinton’s legacy continues to inspire! 💪

When this little feral guy was trapped for neutering, it was clear he had another issue. 🙀 His tail had been degloved - a serious and painful injury that can lead to deadly infections. Thankfully, he was brought to our Community Cat Clinic just in time!

After a thorough exam, our vets determined that a tail amputation was the best course of action. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society, he got the help he needed. 💙

The surgery went perfectly, and we expect him to make a quick recovery!

🚨 IMPORTANT INFO FOR MICROCHIPPED PETS. Please read and share!

If your pet was microchipped with us, we use HomeAgain, so you don’t have to worry. BUT, if your pet’s microchip is registered with Save This Life, this business has closed. It’s crucial to quickly update the registration with another company to ensure your pet stays protected. 🐶🐱

Do this in THREE EASY Steps! 🙏

1. Get the Microchip Number – If you don’t have the vet records or adoption papers, you can get your pet scanned at a veterinary clinic to retrieve the number. We can scan your pet at our Spay & Neuter Clinic as well.

2. Look It Up – Go to bit.ly/microchiplookup to see if the chip is registered with Save This Life.

3. Take Action – If it’s registered with Save This Life, re-register it with another company ASAP. HomeAgain, 24Petwatch, and PetLink are a few options. Some registration services charge a fee and some are free.

❗️ Important Bonus Step – Make sure your info on the chip is current. Outdated microchips are one of the main reasons clinics and shelters reach a dead end and lost pets cannot be reunited. 💔

After new family members temporarily moved into her home, Mochi became stressed and nervous. She’s a bit of a sensitive girl! 😿 She bolted, and despite her family’s desperate search, she was nowhere to be found.

Lo and behold, over a YEAR later, she turned up at our Community Cat Clinic as a trapped kitty! 😲 We scanned her microchip, gave her family a call, and just like that, she was reunited with her humans. 💕 They were overjoyed and ready to help her readjust to home life and her siblings.

THIS is why we say microchips save lives. Without hers, Mochi could have spent the rest of her life struggling on the streets.

💙 Our community cats now have a cozy, custom-built haven thanks to the incredible generosity and hard work of Steve Kohon, Facilities Manager and resident MacGyver at the Nevada SPCA Life-Saving Shelter. 🐾 Now we need a name for it! Let us know in the comments! 🐾 This insulated shelter is a feline paradise complete with cat trees, plenty of food and water, cozy beds, and even warm mini-shelters for chilly nights. 🐾 Prince’s Makeover! 🐾 Meet Prince, the dapper community cat who just got a much-needed spa day! 💇‍♂️ This long-haired cutie was brought in by the amazing Kim Lovelady Henry for an exam and a fresh shave. While Prince is already neutered, fluffy cats like him can sometimes get a little tangled up, so it was time for a little extra TLC. ✨ Out of the 15 cats that Kim, Joyce, and their awesome coworkers care for outside of Las Vegas Paving Corp., Prince is the only one who will brave the indoors to enjoy some AC and indulge in tasty treats. 😎 But don’t get any ideas—he’s still not a fan of cuddles. 😂 We’re so grateful for businesses and individuals like Kim and the Las Vegas Paving team, who are true LIFESAVERS for our community cats.
