Just like us, pets can develop eye issues that affect their comfort and vision. Common conditions include cataracts, glaucoma, corneal ulcers, and retinal diseases. While your family vet can handle many routine eye concerns, some cases need a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist for advanced care.

When should you schedule an eye exam?
✔ Squinting, tearing, or redness
✔ Cloudiness or color changes
✔ Sudden vision changes

Specialists use advanced diagnostics and treatments, from imaging to surgery, to keep your pet’s eyes healthy. Early detection is key, so don’t ignore those subtle signs!

💡 Fun fact: Dogs and cats see colors differently than we do, they’re not color blind, but their world looks less vibrant.

Dogs may have noticeable seizures causing their bodies to convulse. They may also exhibit more subtle signs such as facial tremors, sudden movements, or unusual barking. If your dog ever experiences a seizure, here are some things to remember:

✅ Stay calm and focused to help keep your pet at ease.
✅ Track the length of the seizure and note the symptoms. If possible, video footage of the episode may be helpful to your dog’s medical team.
✅ Do not attempt to restrain or stop the seizure and keep away from the pet’s mouth, you could get bitten in the process.
✅ To prevent your dog from hurting themselves during a seizure, keep them away from stairs, cushion their head, and gently hold and comfort them until they begin to regain consciousness.
✅ Know that your dog is not conscious or in pain during the seizure, even if they sound or act like they are.
✅ Always call your veterinarian or an emergency hospital ASAP after an occurrence.

If the seizure lasts for 2-3+ minutes or if your dog has more than one seizure in a 24-hour period, this requires immediate medical attention. Bring them to your veterinarian or nearest emergency hospital right away. We are open 24/7 for pet emergencies. Our info is below.

Thanksgiving is almost here! While we’re excited about the delicious feast ahead, it’s important to understand which foods are toxic for pets.

Keep your cats and dogs away from:
- Stuffing – as it may contain onions or garlic
- Ham and other Pork – can cause pancreatitis, upset stomach, or diarrhea
- Turkey – Dogs should only have a little bit of meat, no skin or seasoning
- Turkey Bones – splinters may cause indigestion or bowel obstruction
- Mashed Potatoes – may have been prepared with butter and dairy
- Salads with Grapes/Raisins – can cause kidney failure
- Chocolate Desserts – toxic to both cats and dogs

If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic this holiday call Capital District at (518) 785-1094; we are open 24/7 and our hours on Thanksgiving Day are the same.
