FUN FACT FRIDAY

This week Jess Kirsch did a write up for us about Belgian Malinois and Mondio!

“Belgian Malinois have become more and more popular in recent years, but that is not necessarily a good thing. While the dogs are very versatile, they are not for everyone. Most mals require a full-time commitment and a job, if not several jobs, to keep them physically and mentally happy. The breed is capable of just about anything and they are often used in the military or for police work, but they can also make some really nice sport dogs and participate in a variety of events.

Jess K. owns 3 belgian malinois and they have since become her favorite breed. Her dogs have participated in a variety of sports including mondioring, flyball, weight pull, AKC obedience and Rally, scent work, dock diving, and frisbee. We could do a fun fact friday for each of these sports alone, but let's talk about mondioring.

Mondioring is "world ring" and it is an FCI recognized sport that is played internationally by countries all over the world. It is a newer sport that was developed in the late 1980s by combining French Ring, Belgian Ring, IPO, and KNPV. The first trial was not hosted until the year 2000 and the sport has gained steady popularity over the years with many clubs and trials being offered across the US today. Some of the original US Mondioring members are still alive and trialing dogs today because it is such a new sport; Jess trains with several of them regularly.

FCI Mondioring consists of obedience, jumps, and bitework. Each level gets more difficult and adds additional exercises as you go up, with level 3 being the most difficult. The entire program is done all at once and without any training tools or rewards and without any breaks. There is also a US only program that offers obedience, obedience and jumps, or a brevet (some bitework) that dogs can participate in. The sport is dominated by the Belgian Malinois due to its difficulty both physically and mentally on the dogs, but several other breeds have earned titles in the sport. “

Enjoy some amazing pictures of Hadley!

MEET THE MEMBERS MONDAY 🐶

We haven’t had one of these to post in while 🙂 meet Victoria Elizabeth and Kona!!

Kona is almost 4 years old and Victoria has had her for about 3 years. They saw LHWD at the pet expo in Pittsburgh and have been looking forward to being able to attend the Intro to Weightpull class! Which they just completed!

They have run a couple of 5ks together but Kona acted like it was The Iditarod, so Victoria has been looking forward to getting into something Kona enjoys better!

Kona has become stronger and more confident, and it has strengthened her and Victoria’s relationship after completing the class. They are excited to continue learning about this new sport and getting more involved with dog sports in general!!

Kona also has an 11 year old brother, Jax, and he enjoys coming to swim in the pull after weightpull practice!!

Please welcome Victoria and Kona!! 😊
We’re excited to see you both grow in this sport!!

FUN FACT FRIDAY

This week we’re learning more about Liz Eisaman and her dog, Jager!

“Also referred to as a German mastiff, great Danes were originally bred to hunt wild boar in the 1700's.

They are one of the largest dog breeds standing up to 35" tall. With their imposing size and protective nature, great Danes were thought to protect against evil entities during the middle ages.

Great Danes were first shown in Germany in 1863. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1887 and later became the state dog of Pennsylvania.

There are 6 recognized colors for the breed. Fawn, black, blue, mantle, brindle, harlequin.

Today, great Danes have become low energy family pets. They often excel in therapy work due to their Goofy personalities and calm demeanor.”

FUN FACT FRIDAY

Today’s post features Ashlee Marie and her dog, Stryker!!

“Fun facts about Quicksilver vom Warkonhaus “Stryker”.

He is a working line German Shepard. He loves swimming, dock diving, paddle boarding and hiking. He also likes training for IGP on the side (which is a form of protection sport). Stryker’s parents are both Schutzhund titled.

Stryker is becoming a beast at weight pull. His future plans are to do AKC fetch. Stryker also loves chasing his favorite kitty sibling around the house.

Fun facts about working line German Shepherds: they were originally used for herding sheep for farmers, then they quickly became protection dogs for police and military. The working line German Shepard is different from their show line counterparts as they are bred for working and have a stable temperament. This allows them to excel in so many sports."

Enjoy some fun photos of Stryker working and enjoying the finer things in life!

FUN FACT FRIDAY

Next up is Sophia Valenti and her dog Max!!

“This is Max the lab, and here are some fun facts about him and his breed!

Max likes getting his nails done. He also likes showing them off! He pulls off the color pink best!

Max likes hiking with his brother Stryker, a German Shepherd. He also likes all of his cat siblings, especially the younger ones.

Now for some facts about his breed! Labradors have webbed toes and this makes them great swimmers! Another fact about his breed is that their coat is doubled layered. The bottom layer is short and the upper layer is thick. They have a relatively water-resistant undercoat!”

Enjoy some of these adorable pictures of Max!

FUN FACT FRIDAY

Next up is Kate Renner! Here is her write up about Dutch Shepherds!

“The Dutch Shepherd or Hollandase Herderhond was developed in the Netherlands in the 1800's as an all around herding and farm dog. The first breed standard was written in 1898 allowing any coat color and revised in 1914 to allow only brindle coats and no white markings were allowed. This helped to differentiate the Dutch Shepherds from then-similar Belgian and German Shepherds. Only allowing Brindle and no white markings limited the number of dogs who were bred and the number of Dutch Shepherds declined for decades.

The Dutch Shepherd breed was nearly eliminated during World War 2 due to lack of breeding, starvation, and the German military taking the dogs for their own use. Many bloodlines became extinct. To help shore up the Dutch Shepherd after the war the breed club allowed the use of Belgian Malinois to help diversify the bloodlines. Even today you have almost two versions of the Dutch Shepherd. FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) A smaller dog dedicated to preserving a breed Standard and the KNPV Koninklijke Nederlandse Politiehond Vereniging (Royal Dutch Police Dog Association) which has mixed Belgians and Dutch Shepherds with a focus on creating the ultimate police/working dog. The overall function, form ,and look of the dog has changed very little in 120 years.

No matter which type you have- a Dutch Shepherd is an intense, loyal, extreme dog who is willing to do anything you would like it to do - and give 150% doing it.”
