Addison/ Rootbeer Update!

I am in good spirits today, although there has been a slight change of plans. My original surgery which was scheduled tomorrow morning, has been postponed due to the winter forecast and road conditions. It has been rescheduled for early February, when hopefully weather conditions will be conducive to safe travels. In the meantime, I will patiently wait while enjoying time spent with the AFA staff.

My little buddy Rootbeer, who is now affectionately being called "Rootie", is showing signs of progress. He started putting some weight on his bad leg. The Doctors continue to evaluate his progress and have a glimmer of hope his leg may be saved after all. While Rootie waits, staff are busy trying to help him overcome his shyness with strangers. It may take some time, but we all know you can do it little guy!

One last update, Wilma, Lauren's Wing 91st recipient has officially started her search for her forever home. Please help spread the word to anyone who may be interested in opening their hearts and home to her. Wilma is currently at the AFA shelter ready to meet visitors! ❤️

More updates to come!

Greetings from your 94th recipient!

My life actually started here at the AFA shelter when my Mama, “Popsicle” arrived with a secret. Mom is a rather small dachshund Chihuahua mix, so it didn’t take all that long to notice her growing belly. She grew so big that the staff became concerned. An X-ray revealed a large litter of puppies. Shortly after, “Mom” delivered a litter of 7 pups all by herself during the night. It was quite a feat for such a small girl, seven pups in all and miraculously healthy at that. We were given names in Mama’s honor: Cherry, Banana, Lemon Lime, Orange, Grape, Blueberry and me Rootbeer! Now that’s a lot of pups for one little Mom to feed, so AFA staff member, Amanda, stepped in to give my Mom a hand. Amanda is an angel, volunteering to take 2 of my siblings to her home to bottle feed around the clock. Kudos to Amanda for volunteering to take on such a tiring but rewarding job!

Everything was going well with my siblings, but the staff noticed I was having problems with both of my hind legs. An Xray revealed that neither of my leg bones had grown properly into the hip bones, most likely from developing while “squished” awaiting my delivery. Take one look at my Mom’s Xray and its easy to understand!

I am being carefully monitored and at this point, the Dr believes one hip is growing closer to its proper place. The other shows no hope of ever being able to function. The decision will be finalized in a few weeks but it seems my leg may have to be amputated to avoid future problems.

My tiny little heart is full of gratitude for the help my family has received here at the shelter and from Amanda. I am especially thankful to all who support Lauren’s Wing. Your kindness has provided me the medical funds to start 2025 with hope and a bright future.

Happy New Year to all! 🕛 🎉🥳🎊

XOXO,
Rootbeer

A letter to Santa from our 93rd recipient:

Dear Santa, 🎅🏻
I am writing with my Christmas wish. It’s not a toy, or a treat, or even a forever home. My Christmas wish is to just get healthy. ❤️‍🩹

Both of my knees ( back legs) need surgeries. I have no family anymore to help me. Found as a local stray, I was taken to Hoffman Kennel but no one came to claim me. I don’t understand why…. I have always been a sweet and obedient pup. It’s so sad to feel unwanted . 💔

I know it’s a lot to ask, and you are very busy these days, but if you can help, I will be forever grateful.
Love,
XOXO Addison🐾💕🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

I am happy to share, I got my Christmas wish early from Santa, aka “ Lauren’s Wing Supporters”.

Thanks to your caring spirits and generosity, 2 surgeries are scheduled to correct my Luxating patellas, (dislocated kneecaps). My first surgery will take place mid January at Ebensburg Animal Hospital.

Please know I am now at Action for Animals, where I am busy spreading Christmas cheer with my sweet personality. The awesome AFA staff is giving me hope that I am worthy of love. As a one year old, I now have a bright future thanks to everyone involved in my rescue and those who support the Lauren’s Wing Fund!

Your Grateful ❤️93rd recipient,
XOXO Addison🐾

Lauren’s Wing wishes to express a heartfelt thank you to the Janessa Fleming Memorial Fund and the entire Fleming Family for a generous gift to the Lauren’s Wing fund. The donation came to us with the following message:
“The Janessa Fleming Memorial Fund was established in loving memory of Janessa (JJ) Fleming to carry on her loving and caring spirit. Janessa, a friend to all, always expressed a love for animals. With this in mind, the Janessa Fleming Memorial Fund presents Lauren’s Wing with a $1000 donation.”
We are truly grateful that the Fleming family has chosen to honor Janessa’s memory through our fund. It is our hope that there is joy in knowing JJ’s vibrant spirit, boundless energy, love and enthusiasm will live on in the lifesaving care animals will receive through this donation. It is a blessing to have known Janessa during her lifetime and witness firsthand her gifts of love, inclusion and compassion to everyone she met. Although her years on earth were short, the moments that she touched the lives of those around her are monumental.
Lauren’s Wing Family wishes to humbly express our deepest appreciation to Paula Fleming (Janessa’s mother) and the entire Fleming Family and extend our gratitude for your support and friendship through the years.

Puppy Updates!

We made our trip to Ohio State University early Monday morning thanks to AFA Manager Lu. We were greeted by AFA and Lauren’s Wing alum Eugene, who assured us we were in good hands! He stayed with us for a little visit before he had to leave and go to “work” here at OSU!

I was first to meet with the heart specialist. It was agreed that my heart needs a “balloon proceedure to function properly. The surgery will take place this week. I am a little worried, but have faith the Doctors know best.
XoXo ❤️ Wilma 🐾

Then after a bit of a wait, I heard the call for “Groot” from the orthopedic specialists. More X-rays were taken and the Doctors watched me run up and down the hallway, which I eagerly and energetically performed. There was good news after watching me in action! The Doctors want to hold off on doing surgery. The X-ray showed the bones are growing a bit closer together and there is a chance I will be fine. Time will tell! Lucky me got to ride back to the AFA shelter Monday evening with Lu! 💝

An Update!
It was a wonderful weekend for me. I am officially adopted and beginning my first week in a loving forever home!❤️
Here is my picture leaving the AFA shelter.

After a rough life in West VA, I am thrilled to be starting a new chapter thanks to the wonderful people who support the Lauren’s Wing fund, the compassionate AFA staff, and my NEW FAMILY!

Our Newest Recipients!

Hello friends! My name is Wilma, a black lab mix pup, and my name is Groot, a Cavapoo pup, and we will soon become the 91st and 92nd Lauren’s Wing Recipients!

From Wilma: My mamma was lucky to find her way to the AFA shelter, and gave birth to a litter of pups after her arrival. My siblings are all well, but the AFA veterinarians didn’t like what they heard when listening to my heart. They suspect there is an issue with a heart valve. I will travel to Ohio State University at the end of October to see heart specialist and have surgery.

From Groot: I am a 12 week old Cavipoo pup rescued from a puppy mill. While at the shelter, staff noticed my front leg seemed to pop out of my joint. An examination revealed an issue that will require orthopedic surgery to place a plate to stabilize my joint. The trip to OSU is scheduled for October 15.

We both agree we are lucky pups to be surrounded by such caring and compassionate animal lovers. The generosity from all those that support Lauren’s Wing will enable us to have life changing surgeries.

On a happy note, while we are awaiting our surgeries we are living our best puppy lives in loving homes! ❤️💕❤️💕

XOXO,
🐾Wilma🐶 & 🐾Groot 🐶

Two Lauren’s Wing Updates:

Remember me, “Marbles”, the West VA kitty hit by a car. Just before my scheduled surgery to repair a broken leg, the Dr discovered my lung had collapsed. The surgery was postponed and I was sent to rest for a few weeks before
surgery could safely take place. While staying at a foster home, something magical happened, and I became known as a “Foster Fail”. For those not familiar with the term, it’s when the Foster Family falls in love and wants to adopt the animal in their care. My new family understood the protocols for Lauren’s Wing recipients and agreed to pay all medical bills so I could be theirs. I am so excited to already have a forever home where I can recover from my surgery with a family and environment I am comfortable in. It is so good to loved! I was to be the 89th recipient of the Lauren’s Wing Fund, but no worries for I have found a fellow West Virginian to take my place.
Meet my friend “Bailey”!

My name is Bailey, and I am a young 1 year old black lab mix. Like Marbles, I was hit by a car in Boone County, West VA. My owners never came to claim me leaving me heartbroken and worried about my future. My front leg had to be amputated. Thanks to the wonderful people who support the Lauren’s Wing Fund, my surgery was given the green light. Since arriving at the Action for Animals Humane Society, I have gained the reputation of having one of the sweetest personalities ever!❤️
I know the trauma and hardships are behind me now, and I have faith and trust in the people I am meeting here in my new state of PA! I am most grateful to be your 89th recipient!
XOXO, Bailey 🐾 and Marbles 😺❤️❤️

We are pleased to share an article from the AFA newsletter written by AFA shelter manager Lu Ann Hutchinson. Lu writes a detailed account of life at the shelter, and the journeys of some of our 2024 recipients.
Lauren’s Wing is honored to partner with AFA and our super hero Lu, a devoted animal advocate, whose knowledge of animals and the laws protecting them is surpassed only by her love of rescuing those in need.
While reading the article, there is mention of the finances involved in saving lives of our homeless shelter friends. We don’t typically focus on finances because we feel you can’t put a price on saving an animals life. However, we agree that sometimes it’s good to make people aware of what can be accomplished when
so many kind, compassionate and generous supporters come together to help! Our 2024 recipients totaled $38,000 in expenses thus far. Thanks to our supporters we have never turned an animal away that needed help since our mission began is 2013.
Thanks to all who support our fund in a multitude of ways! You have made a world of difference in the lives of 90 shelter animals and their families!
Special thanks and kudos to Becca Russell and Annette Russell, who
surprised us this summer with their over the top generosity that certainly helped drive our mission forward during these busy times. ❤️The love your parents instilled in you for all creatures great and small burns brightly!

Update from TANK!
Today was a big day for me! I got to ditch my cone because my stitches were coming out!😁
I am in great spirits and had no problem adjusting to life on 3 legs. Now, there is one more hurdle for me. In approximately a week, I will follow AFA protocol and be neutered before the “Forever home” search can begin.
If anyone out there is thinking of adding a sweet little guy into their loving home, please keep me in mind!❤️I would like nothing more than to meet you in person someday soon.

A TANK update!
I had my surgery Friday and Shelter Manager Lu came this weekend to transport me back home at the AFA shelter.

My surgery was a rough one but I am doing well. The standard procedure of neutering while I was already under anesthesia was aborted due to the longer than expected surgery time.

I really appreciate all the wonderful care I am receiving. The AFA staff are very kind and gentle. I couldn’t be in a better place!❤️

Thank you to all the compassionate people
who support the Lauren’s Wing fund. Without you, I don’t know what would have happened to me. I can recover knowing a better life awaits me thanks to all of you!
Check back for more of my story!
XOXO ❤️🐾Tank

An update on Marbles and meet Tank!
Pictures of Tank below! 👇👇

Note from Marbles:
I had surgery scheduled for July. Just before the procedure, the Doctor noticed my breathing was labored. As a precaution, an
X-Ray was taken that showed a collapsed lung. The surgery was aborted and cage rest for several weeks recommended for me.
I am making progress and will soon have my lung reevaluated to make certain the surgery will be safe. In the meantime, I am getting friendlier with the kind people providing me with great care! ❤️
Xoxo Marbles 🐾

Meet TANK!
With a name like TANK, you might get the impression I am a mighty big guy! So you could be in for a surprise if you meet me in person because I am a Chihuahua and beagle/terrier(?) mix. My personality is super chill and sweet!
A West VA Shelter sent AFA manager Lu an Xray of my hip asking if Lauren’s Wing could help. The injury was never treated in the past so I don’t use my leg anymore.
I am proud to be the 90th recipient of the Lauren’s Wing Fund. The next chapter of my story will include surgery, post op care and a search for a family who will provide the love and care I deserve.
Check for updates soon!
With a grateful heart!

Sure to make you smile 😃 - a day in the life of AFA and Lauren’s Wing alum Eugene!

As you can see, I have become quite the busy little fellow since my adoption! A day in my life ranges from working at my desk at OSU, traveling to rabbit shows where I am the unofficial judge that hands out trophies, traveling and spreading laughs and joy as I eagerly supervise everything in my site!

XOXO, ❤️Eugene
P.S. If there are any other Lauren’s Wing recipients that would like to share an update and photos, please send them along. We would all LOVE to hear from you! 💕💝

Meet Marbles!
I am just a little kitty who managed to get myself into some major trouble over the weekend. I may have been on the run from all the scary fireworks but no one knows for certain and I am not telling! I ended up at BARC rescue, who decided to call shelter manager Lu asking if Lauren’s Wing could help a kitty with a badly injured leg. The “Absolutely!” response has given me hope! My surgery is scheduled for the 15th. Unfortunately, after initial exams the Drs don’t think my leg can be saved. But I am a young one and will transition to life on 3 legs if need be. I am just very grateful to everyone who supports Lauren’s Wing! Your generosity and kindness is something I will be forever grateful for!

A surprise visit! 🐾

Remember me???? I am Liam, the 37th recipient of the Lauren’s Wing Fund. (2018)
I surprised everyone recently when I stopped by AFA for a visit. As you can tell from my photos, I am happy, healthy and couldn’t have found a more wonderful family to share my life with!

And speaking of family, I left the shelter that afternoon with a brand new sister puppy! 💝 Yay, let the good times roll!
