Greetings from your 94th recipient!
My life actually started here at the AFA shelter when my Mama, “Popsicle” arrived with a secret. Mom is a rather small dachshund Chihuahua mix, so it didn’t take all that long to notice her growing belly. She grew so big that the staff became concerned. An X-ray revealed a large litter of puppies. Shortly after, “Mom” delivered a litter of 7 pups all by herself during the night. It was quite a feat for such a small girl, seven pups in all and miraculously healthy at that. We were given names in Mama’s honor: Cherry, Banana, Lemon Lime, Orange, Grape, Blueberry and me Rootbeer! Now that’s a lot of pups for one little Mom to feed, so AFA staff member, Amanda, stepped in to give my Mom a hand. Amanda is an angel, volunteering to take 2 of my siblings to her home to bottle feed around the clock. Kudos to Amanda for volunteering to take on such a tiring but rewarding job!
Everything was going well with my siblings, but the staff noticed I was having problems with both of my hind legs. An Xray revealed that neither of my leg bones had grown properly into the hip bones, most likely from developing while “squished” awaiting my delivery. Take one look at my Mom’s Xray and its easy to understand!
I am being carefully monitored and at this point, the Dr believes one hip is growing closer to its proper place. The other shows no hope of ever being able to function. The decision will be finalized in a few weeks but it seems my leg may have to be amputated to avoid future problems.
My tiny little heart is full of gratitude for the help my family has received here at the shelter and from Amanda. I am especially thankful to all who support Lauren’s Wing. Your kindness has provided me the medical funds to start 2025 with hope and a bright future.
Happy New Year to all! 🕛 🎉🥳🎊
XOXO,
Rootbeer
