Why Tall Tails?
Here are a few reasons that our pups so special:
Mom and dad are our pets. We do not breed for profit, we do it for education. We fell in love with the breed, and our hearts shattered when we realized some breeders do not care about the animals they breed. One of our beautiful girls, Patience, was bred under such conditions, and ended up with a family that didn't know how to care for Great Danes properly. After rescuing her, we decided to breed to show that Great Danes are amazing and beautiful dogs.
At times we have had 6 or more Danes in our home. Our dogs have lived side by side with newborns, toddlers, cats, and all of our visitors and friends. In short, our Danes are family.
When we breed we allow nature to take its course. If it happens it happens.... we don't force it. After one of our females gets pregnant we make sure that she has at least a year rest before the possibility of another litter. We are with mommy to support her as she delivers, all day and night if necessary! We handle the pups from day one and make sure all dogs are healthy and safe. After a few days we introduce the puppies to our daughters (ages 4 and 2). Mama dog must give her approval, but after she does the girls get to pet and talk to the puppies. Our four year old even helps with their cleaning and feeding. Our pups are introduced to kids early on to ensure confidence of the pups and reduce fear or aggression.
We treat our pups with deworming at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks old. We start mush at 3 weeks old and slowly introduce them to different flavors of food to avoid or acknowledge allergies.
From the day they are born they are in the middle of the action in our busy home, not tucked away in a quiet room. We allow them to get use to all the sounds and smells of a working home.
Our pups are evaluated by a licensed vet who specializes in large breed dogs at 4 weeks and 8 weeks, and their first shots are completed at 8 weeks old.
By 5 weeks old we begin working with the pups to break the pack mentality and help each pup grow confident on their own. By week 6 we start training the pups to come to a specific name (if given by new owners) or a specific sound and start to potty train.
We also work with our pups on something I like to call “scruff training.” We help desensitize the puppies to having their paws, tails, ears, and scruff messed with. This allows the puppies to tolerate play with humans and other animals with limited aggressive behavior.
Lastly, before the pups go to their forever homes we microchip them and pay for a lifetime membership of AKC Reunite for you.
To adopt one of our pups, we require an application process to ensure the happiness of both the puppies and you, the new owner.
