A 16 year old quarter horse gelding, used for team roping, presented for non weight bearing lameness of the right hind limb. Instability of the stifle joint was noted upon manipulation of the upper limb. Palpation of the stifle revealed copious amounts of effusion present in the medial femorotibial joint and the lateral femorotibial joint. Radiographs were unremarkable. Ultrasound showed synovitis, effusion, and a partially torn meniscus in the medial femorotibial joint and hemarthrosis in the lateral femorotobial joint. Based on this information, a torn cranial cruciate ligament was suspected. The joint was aseptically prepped, tapped, and injected with corticosteroids and Hyaluronic acid to provide comfort to the patient while he awaits arthroscopy. Video of the lateral joint tap posted in the comments. #darkhorseequine
