IS YOUR DOG BORED? HOW TO MAKE YOUR DOG’S REGULAR FOOD INTAKE WORK TO YOUR ADVANTAGE (& THEIRS)
You’ve probably heard of environmental enrichment - where we leave our dogs with something to do in their environment while we’re gone.
If you’ve had to spend any time in lockdown, you might know how boring it can get to be stuck at home with nothing to do. Imagine what it’s like for our dogs when we go to work all day!
You’ve probably also heard of food toys like Kongs.
But did you know that a lot of people who have tried Kongs with poor results?
Their dogs either don’t seem interested, or the food falls out and it’s gone in 60 seconds.
So I’d like to share how to get the most out of these food toys and change this, because the benefits are worth it, including:
🦴 Prevent chewing and destruction of your valuables at home because your dog is busy with this task for longer, keeping them away from the things you treasure
🦴 Being busy and more tired, your dog will also have less time to spend on barking
🦴 Satisfy your dog’s chewing instinct - which needs to be fulfilled (especially for puppies)
🦴 Gives your dog’s jaw exercise
🦴 Give your dog mental stimulation
🦴 Clean your dog’s teeth
🦴 Make your dog tired so by the time they’ve eaten, they need a nap
🦴 Keep your dog cooler in Summer
Sounds worth it? Here’s what makes the difference:
Only use a Kong when your dog is really hungry. So many people feed their dog a bowl of breakfast or leave a bowl of food sitting out and then wonder why the dog doesn’t eat the food in the Kong. Why would they put in the extra work required to get the food out if they’re already full?
There’s also a difference between a dog that loves any food in general and a dog that is hungry enough to really work for it. So instead of giving a Kong after breakfast, the Kong IS breakfast.
Use appropriate food. Don’t use kibble - it will fall straight out so it won’t keep your dog busy for long. Fill the Kong with something moist.
Freeze it. Especially in the warmer months, freeze the mince inside the Kong, then give it to your dog frozen. This will take extra time and effort with some dogs taking over an hour to eat this. Then they rest. Winning!
Remove the Kong when you return / when it’s finished with that day. Leaving Kongs out decreases the exciting novelty and exposes them to sun damage. Each day, pick up the used Kong, put it in the wash and refill. Ideally have at least two models and rotate the type each day.
Definitely make sure you choose the right size Kong for your dog. It should be large enough that it cannot fit down the throat. Supervise the first few times if your dog is new to this type of feeding.
I’ve seen this feeding habit make a massive difference to many dog training clients over the years with keeping their dogs busy, happy, healthy, and quieter.
Give it a try and if you previously tried and it didn’t work, try it this way. Your dog will love you for it.
