Here are the most important lessons every puppy should learn during their early development stage. Tag or share this to anyone with a new pup!

1. Being left alone is OK

Take it from me – separation-related issues is one thing you really want to avoid. Most new puppies cry when left alone and this is not the same as a dog with separation anxiety. Train the puppy early to be comfortable while alone whether in a crate, laundry, back yard or dog run etc. Never go to the puppy and let her out when she is crying for attention

2. Come when called

A reliable recall would have to be THE most important obedience exercise. This is a safety issue. You do not want your dog to think twice about coming when called if there is an emergency – such as your dog running towards a busy road to chase a bird. Make sure that every time your dog comes when you call her, she feels rewarded. Never punish your dog after she has come when called. Even if she has done something wrong beforehand, the last thing she will remember and associate the punishment with is that she came to you when called.

Remember, punishment is what the dog finds undesirable. This may include putting the leash back on to go home.

3. Sit & Stay

A good reliable sit is useful for many training situations. For example, train a solid sit and teach your dog to sit to greet people rather than jumping up. Rather than teaching dogs the word “stay” after we have said “sit,” we teach dogs to hold the commanded position until they hear their release word. Such as, “ok” or “free.”

Stationing training where we teach the puppy to get on a mat and stay there until release is also an extremely useful skill.

4. Crate training

I find a lot of people have never heard of crate training. I too was sceptical at first but now I can’t imagine raising a puppy without crate training! Puppies need strict supervision just like a toddler. You wouldn’t let a toddler roam free in the house without supervision so why would you let a puppy do it? Free roaming allows puppies to practice bad habits such as chewing things and toileting in the house. Crate training is so useful for those times you can’t supervise, great for toilet training, a place for puppy or dog to sleep and also for travel or medical reasons. Teach your puppy to love her crate as her safe haven where pleasant things happen such as games, treats and meals.

5. Leave it

Protect your puppy from grabbing and eating harmful things such as cane toads or unknown edible items on the foot path by teaching your puppy to “leave it” on command. Reward your puppy with a better alternative for leaving the original item.

IS YOUR DOG BORED? HOW TO MAKE YOUR DOG’S REGULAR FOOD INTAKE WORK TO YOUR ADVANTAGE (& THEIRS)

You’ve probably heard of environmental enrichment - where we leave our dogs with something to do in their environment while we’re gone.

If you’ve had to spend any time in lockdown, you might know how boring it can get to be stuck at home with nothing to do. Imagine what it’s like for our dogs when we go to work all day!

You’ve probably also heard of food toys like Kongs.

But did you know that a lot of people who have tried Kongs with poor results?

Their dogs either don’t seem interested, or the food falls out and it’s gone in 60 seconds.

So I’d like to share how to get the most out of these food toys and change this, because the benefits are worth it, including:

🦴 Prevent chewing and destruction of your valuables at home because your dog is busy with this task for longer, keeping them away from the things you treasure

🦴 Being busy and more tired, your dog will also have less time to spend on barking

🦴 Satisfy your dog’s chewing instinct - which needs to be fulfilled (especially for puppies)

🦴 Gives your dog’s jaw exercise

🦴 Give your dog mental stimulation

🦴 Clean your dog’s teeth

🦴 Make your dog tired so by the time they’ve eaten, they need a nap

🦴 Keep your dog cooler in Summer

Sounds worth it? Here’s what makes the difference:

Only use a Kong when your dog is really hungry. So many people feed their dog a bowl of breakfast or leave a bowl of food sitting out and then wonder why the dog doesn’t eat the food in the Kong. Why would they put in the extra work required to get the food out if they’re already full?

There’s also a difference between a dog that loves any food in general and a dog that is hungry enough to really work for it. So instead of giving a Kong after breakfast, the Kong IS breakfast.

Use appropriate food. Don’t use kibble - it will fall straight out so it won’t keep your dog busy for long. Fill the Kong with something moist.

Freeze it. Especially in the warmer months, freeze the mince inside the Kong, then give it to your dog frozen. This will take extra time and effort with some dogs taking over an hour to eat this. Then they rest. Winning!

Remove the Kong when you return / when it’s finished with that day. Leaving Kongs out decreases the exciting novelty and exposes them to sun damage. Each day, pick up the used Kong, put it in the wash and refill. Ideally have at least two models and rotate the type each day.

Definitely make sure you choose the right size Kong for your dog. It should be large enough that it cannot fit down the throat. Supervise the first few times if your dog is new to this type of feeding.

I’ve seen this feeding habit make a massive difference to many dog training clients over the years with keeping their dogs busy, happy, healthy, and quieter.

Give it a try and if you previously tried and it didn’t work, try it this way. Your dog will love you for it.

Want to know why your dog ignores your call or only comes when they feel like it? Simple - there's something better on their radar!

Once you set the rules with coming when called, you need to consistently reinforce those rules. This means that off leash freedom needs to be earned by reliable behaviour over time and if your dog gets rusty on their recall again, freedom is restricted again for a period.

When you leave a recall to chance and just hope for the best when you call, you are allowing your dog to repeatedly see that the command is optional and that there could be more interesting options out there.

That's why we train recalls on a long line in many different environments and situations. This way, if the dog doesn't come on command, we can reel them in like a fish.

Through repetition the dog can start to believe that coming when called is never optional - it simply always happens.

The majority of people I speak to who complain that their dog doesn't come when called have not actively trained a recall in the situations that they want their dog to listen. Actively training a recall means spending the time setting up a variety of situations and using a line to guarantee a successful recall.

The best way to train a recall is to make it a fun game for both you and your dog so that they're always looking forward to coming when called. So if you enjoy playing with your dog, add this game to your play time and practice fun, but non negotiable, recalls.
