AWW MOMENT ALERT ‼️ B Bug 🐞 with our Sunshine 🌞 There have been a few changes this week here at the garden and Sunny, Imogen, and Winnie are back in the big herd. It got a little crowded in the nursery now that the babies have become so poppity. Sunny is back in her apartment on the 2nd level. She is 4 1/2 years old and due to her partial paralysis and age she is not quite as comfortably mobile as she used to be. We are addressing this and potentially getting her a wheelchair. However, somehow she managed to get herself up to the top of the ramp that goes to the upper level. She’s never done this before! 😮 Bug loves her Aunt Sunshine and joined her up there for a nap. 💚

What did you do this morning, Meg? Oh, just delivered a baby guinea pig. 🐣 Carolina had her babies! Four wiggly babies! 💚💚💚💚 We ended up at the vet yesterday because I was concerned she hadn’t had them yet and she was SO huge. At only barely 5 months old so she is a high-risk pregnancy. We did an x-ray to get a better idea of exactly what to expect. Baby 1 was blocking the way, laying across the birth ca**l, with the other three behind. A heart murmur was also detected, which can happen during pregnancies when there are so many babies and/or when the mama is so small. We were prepared for the worst. 😣Fortunately, Baby 1 shifted into the ca**l. She did get stuck, though, so I had to maneuver her out the rest of the way. The other three babies came easily. 🙏🏼 Thank goodness I came into the room exactly at the right moment. 🍀 Bug got to meet a newborn Guinea Pig, as she spent the night in the nursery. She wanted to know why it was so small! 🐞 Carolina’s babies will all be named after cities in the states of north and South Carolina. We will have her heart checked again in a couple of weeks, or sooner if we see increased symptoms. 💗 If anyone would like to contribute to Carolina’s vet bills, or send us some goodies, especially young guinea pig food from our Amazon wish list we would greatly appreciate it. My last picture of Augusta. 🕊️ This one has broken me guys. Too much. I couldn’t fix her. She tried. I tried. We had to help her cross. This is so very not fair. Georgia and her remaining 2 babies are doing well; the only consolation I can find now. See you in the garden, sweet baby Augusta. Guys, I don’t even know what to feel anymore. Saturn, from the Walmart car park rescue, had her baby last night at her foster home. We thought she had 2-3 pups based on her size. Her sister Ceres had 3 babies several days ago. But Saturn had 1 HUGE baby who was stillborn. Titan weighed 145 grams. He was a beautiful copper-brown colour. How barely 6 month old Saturn delivered him and survived is miraculous. Saturn is well. She is eating and seems bright. Titan will be buried in his foster home in a beautiful garden surrounded by flowers, grasses, and fruit trees. 🌳 🌻Humans do better! Animals are living beings just as deserving (if not more) of love and respect as humans.

As if this day could get any more insane. Jersey from the Placentia park piggie rescue had her babies tonight. I tbought sure she had at least another week. This one broke our biggest baby record only recently set by Louis who weighed in at 114grams. This little one is 120! 😯 However, baby #2 appears to have gotten stuck and poor Jersey had a rough time getting him out. Thankfully, based on what I know of physiology, baby was already deceased, so did not suffer. I’ve seen it happen before, but it is still an horrifically traumatic experience to deal with, made all the worse knowing that mama had to go through it. She does seem stunned, but is taking care of surviving baby. Baby will be named after a city in New Jersey. I have named baby 2 Trenton. He will be buried in the garden with Atlanta. 💔

Let’s talk about the birds and the bees. 🐦 🐝 Some years ago, someone told me that they heard Guinea Pigs can change s*x. They can be born a girl and become a boy when they hit puberty. Over time I came to realize why somebody might believe that. Despite a general commonality, animals, including humans, may develope at different rates. A few months ago we rescued baby Carrie. She lived with my big herd for a little while until she was adopted by 🌱 Soon after she got to her new home, Carrie began exhibiting some strange behaviors. Fortunately, TSLF knows enough about piggies to think to check “certain things”. Lo and behold! Carrie needed a new name. 😬 Normally by 3 weeks we can tell with certainty the s*x of Guinea Pig, but once in a while mother nature likes to play hide and seek 😆 Carrie was one of those cases. More recently it happened here with Eloise, who turned out to be a Louis. Now, you might think Meg doesn’t know what she’s doing! I’m pretty comfortable saying that it has happened to a lot of us, in fact, I know that it has happened to other very experienced rescuers. It makes me wonder how many of those mis-s*xed pet store guinea pigs are the same innocent uh-ohs. I know that probably most of them are due to carelessness, and I am not one to give pet retail companies a break, however we need to be fair. I don’t like to call gender before 3 weeks because I know that it’s sometimes uncertain even when it should be obvious. This is why I check repeatedly until they’re ready for adoption, and just one reason why I don’t adopt animals out under the age of 8 weeks. I did for The Smallest Little Farm (Carrie was 6 weeks) because they are experienced with baby Guinea Pigs and I knew they would be on top of ANY issue that can arise with piggies that young. We believe in transparency here at and folks need to be aware of this potential issue, so that’s why we’re having “the talk 🥹🌻

Fleur. ⚜️ ~8/2021 to 8/12/24. My second oldest mouse ever.

Fleur came to us through South Bay Rodent Rescue around June of 2022. She’d belonged to an unhoused gentleman who felt she needed a better home than his pockets, so Christine picked her up and I decided to keep her for my own. She was close to a year old then.

Fleur was house mama to many little girlie meeces who came to us and ended up living out their lives with us. Her best friend Shelly passed a couple of months ago. We’re down to 3 elderly girls, now. Fleur is buried in the geranium garden next to some of her friends, and Pohana -a guinea pig dumped in a park last year who we were too late to save.

We have a bug on our lettuce! 🥬 🐞 Little one now demands lettuce to accompany her milk (in addition to the lettuce fed at other times of the day). 118 grams as of last night!

Little sassy bug is 94 grams today! 💪🏼🌱 She (still too early to be sure) was the talk of the town at the vet yesterday with a bunch of folks coming over to see this tiny wonder. 🌟

We’ve still not come to terms with what happened to yet here we are a full year later. The betrayal of the and sending 318 (later found to be 323) innocent animals, pets who were entrusted to their care, directly and knowingly into the evil hands of and his cronies to be mistreated and murdered has forever changed all of the rescuers involved. Only 63 animals came back. Of those survivors, a few died later. Our Una (formerly Guapa) made it back, but she obviously misses her sister Cheesy who was lost to the horror. Tonight we honour the survivors and remember the lost.

Little Io from our Planetary Piggie rescue was adopted this weekend to be pals with Freddy Chocolate 🎉🥳 Freddy was adopted from the SPCA and his new family sought to find him a buddy as soon as possible. Freddy was instantly protective of Io and we just know he’ll teach the little kid how to be a good big boy. Congratulations to Freddy, Io, and their family! 💚🌻💚

First babies from our Planetary Piggies! Ceres is of 10 little piggies left in a box in a Walmart car park that we rescued from the shelter. She had 3 healthy babies night before last. Mama and little satellites are doing well. 🔭🪐

Aunt Imogen and wee Calistoga 💚💚 Immi, who was born blind and deaf, was my first medical rescue. She was in a where no one noticed there was anything wrong with her. She had been there for a couple of months, and every time I went in there to buy cat food I noticed she was looking shabbier and shabbier. No one wanted her because she was white with pink eyes. By the time I got her, she was literally days from death from malnutrition and pneumonia. Imogen is a whole story unto herself. You can read about her in our blog (link in our bio). 🔗 Being a little old lady of 6 1/2 we have put her with our partially paralyzed Sunshine into a retirement apartment. For now, they are accompanied by California and her two now one week old babies from the Placentia park piggy rescue. California needed a quieter environment, too. Everyone seems happy. 🌻

Georgette 💐 from the West LA 17. Georgette came to us with her 2 newborns Wallace and Miriam, and friend little Susie. She was in pretty rough shape. We have no idea how many babies she has birthed in her short lifetime, but we are happy to say that there will be no more. She is not pregnant again! 🙏🏼 We are almost as relieved as she is. Now that all this baby business is behind her Georgette will be having a spa day. 🫧🛀 She and Susie will be available for adoption together as a bonded pair in 5 weeks, once Susie’s baby is weaned and she’s had time to recoup. 🌻

After several weeks of beautiful single blossoms, 🌹the rosebush is producing its amazing bouquets. They have a delicate scent, too. I currently have three stems with between 7 and 10 blossoms on each stem. This plant never ceases to amaze me! I paid $2 for a scraggly 2 foot tall stick with a few leaves 5 years ago at the Lowe’s garden center and she has rewarded me with bright orange joy! 🧡🧡🧡

Our little old lady, Fleur. 🌸 Fleur was rescued by in, I believe, June 2022, and we offered to give her a home with us. She was already at least six months old then, which means she is currently 2 1/2 years old. She looks frail and has become mostly blind, but seems happy and comfortable. All of our mice aside from Leonardo are over two years old now. Fleur is my second oldest mouse ever; my oldest, Stewart, having lived 39 months.
