07/06/2023

On May 10th Of This Year, We Sent Out An Email Regarding LA County Code 10.20.350 Which Requires All Dogs And Cats Of At Least 4 Months Of Age To Be Spayed Or Neutered (Also Referred To As "Sterilizing" Or "Fixing"). This New Policy Unintentionally Impacted A Large Number Of Our Patients.

We Have Been Contacted By Many Clients Concerning The Enforcement Of This Law. Upon Further Review And With Great Empathy For Our Clients, And Especially Our Patients, We Want To Stand By Our Mission Statement "Where Compassion And Experience Meet". Moving Forward We Will Return To Our Previous Policy Of Treating Patients Regardless Of Their Spay And Neuter Status.

While We Will Continue To Treat Pets Regardless Of Their Sterilization Status We Strongly Believe It Is In Your Pet's Best Interest To Be Spayed Or Neutered.

These Routine Medical Procedures Not Only Help Control Pet Overpopulation, But They May Also Prevent Medical And Behavioral Problems From Developing, Allowing Your Pet To Lead A Longer, Healthier And Happier Life. Spaying Or Neutering Your Pet May Be A Hard Decision To Make, But It Is Crucial For Their Benefit. Spaying Or Neutering Benefits Your Pet Both Medically And Behaviorally.

Below Are The Benefits Of Spaying & Neutering Your Pet.

Your Female Pet Will Live A Longer, Healthier Life.

Spaying Helps Prevent Uterine Infections And Breast Cancer, Which Is Fatal In About 50 Percent Of Dogs And 90 Percent Of Cats. Spaying Your Pet Before Her First Heat Offers The Best Protection From These Diseases.

Neutering Provides Major Health Benefits For Your Male.

Besides Preventing Unwanted Litters, Neutering Your Male Companion Prevents Testicular Cancer, If Done Before Six Months Of Age.

Your Spayed Female Won't Go Into Heat.

While Cycles Can Vary, Female Felines Usually Go Into Heat Four To Five Days Every Three Weeks During Breeding Season. In An Effort To Advertise For Mates, They'll Yowl And Urinate More Frequently—Sometimes All Over The House!

Your Male Dog Won't Want To Roam Away From Home.

An Intact Male Will Do Just About Anything To Find A Mate! That Includes Digging His Way Under The Fence And Making Like Houdini To Escape From The House. Once He's Free To Roam, He Risks Injury In Traffic And Fights With Other Males.

Your Neutered Male Will Be Much Better Behaved.

Neutered Cats And Dogs Focus Their Attention On Their Human Families. On The Other Hand, Unneutered Dogs And Cats May Mark Their Territory By Spraying Strong-Smelling Urine All Over The House. Many Aggression Problems Can Be Avoided By Early Neutering.

It Is Highly Cost-Effective.

The Cost Of Your Pet's Spay/Neuter Surgery Is A Lot Less Than The Cost Of Having And Caring For A Litter. It Also Beats The Cost Of Treatment When Your Unneutered Tom Escapes And Gets Into Fights With The Neighborhood Stray!

Spaying And Neutering Your Pet Is Good For The Community.

Stray Animals Pose A Real Problem In Many Parts Of The Country. They Can Prey On Wildlife, Can Cause Car Accidents, Damage The Local Fauna And Frighten Children. Spaying And Neutering Packs A Powerful Punch In Reducing The Number Of Animals On The Streets.

Spaying And Neutering Helps Fight Pet Overpopulation.

Every Year, Millions Of Cats And Dogs Of All Ages And Breeds Are Euthanized Or Suffer As Strays. These High Numbers Are The Result Of Unplanned Litters That Could Have Been Prevented By Spaying Or Neutering.

Fourth of July is right around the corner! 🎆

Just a reminder to get your pets medication before the festivities so they are nice and comfortable!

Aside from medication, be sure to take extra precautions around this holiday!

Make your your pets are microchipped, the microchip number is registered (you can register the number online at any registry you choose), and your pet is wearing a collar with their info on it at all times!

Keep your pets indoors, and close your windows and doors. Play some nice music or watch a movie to keep their minds off the noise outside that frighten them.

If you plan to leave home and watch any colorful firework shows, it’s best to leave your fur babies at home in the quietest place in the house, far from windows.

If you don’t have any plans, stay home with your pet and comfort them! They’ll appreciate the love and cuddles 🥰

Please give us a call if you need medications to help your fur baby!

*as a reminder, we will be closed July 4th but we will be open Monday July 3rd and Wednesday July 5th! 🤩

You said goodbye today.

It was time.
She was old and her body couldn’t handle it anymore.
You had given her a great life.
And this is part of loving her,
being able to say goodbye.
You didn’t want to stay for the final injection.
So, you kissed her one last time, through the tears you told her you loved her.
You entrusted me with her final moments.
You trusted that I would take care of her
To make sure she wasn’t in anymore pain.
And I did.
I promise I did.
I fed her treats while we waited for the sedation to take affect.
I pet her gently, talked to her and loved on her.
I even shed a few tears.
I treated her like I would my own.
I comforted her during her final breaths, until she was ready to cross the Rainbow Bridge.
I promise I did.
And then she was gone.
She was finally at peace.
She had gotten her wings.
This might be my job, I might do this daily, but it hurts us too. We aren’t immune to feelings.
She isn’t just another dog
on my list of appointments.
She had a name.
A favorite toy.
A favorite food.
A life full of memories.
A family who loved her.
And I treated her as such.
I promise I did.

Breaking News!! 🩺🐶🐱

Los Angeles County signed one of the nation's toughest laws on pet sterilization. (Los Angeles County Code §10.20.350)

This states that, in the city of Los Angeles, all cats and dogs over the age of 4 months must be spayed or neutered unless certain conditions are met. 👀

Fines for noncompliance can reach up to $500 per animal, and repeated failure to comply is a misdemeanor. 🚨

The ordinance is aimed at reducing and eventually eliminating the thousands of euthanizations conducted in Los Angeles' animal shelters every year due to overpopulation. 🥺

Veterinarians will always suggest spaying or neutering your pet, not only for the health benefits, but also to prevent or resolve behavioral issues. Through the removal of their hormone-producing reproductive organs, a large number of medical conditions can be prevented. There is also the benefit of lowered aggression in animals, which is often caused by these hormones.

Because of these benefits, and to maintain compliance with this law, we are now requiring that all of our patients over 4 months of age be spayed or neutered.

If your pet is currently not spayed or neutered, consultations for scheduling a spay or neuter for your pet will be held during your next visit at Lawndale Pet Hospital. 🤩

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to us!

⚠️caution, last photo is a pet during surgery!⚠️

Has your pet ever gotten into something they shouldn’t have? Have you caught them swallowing bits of their toys or other foreign substances? If owners don’t see their pet eating strange things they will start to move through the digestive tract and cause GI problems which may require them to undergo an exploratory surgery! 🩺

An exploratory surgery (usually an exploratory gastronomy) is when pets come in with unusual GI issues and we find strange things in their bellies. X-rays will usually indicate what may possibly be inside, where the doctor may then suggest doing the exploratory where we will go into your pets tummy and check their stomachs and intestines inch by inch until we find the offending substance. Once located, the object(s) will be removed and the pet will be sutured up and sent home to recover! 🩻

This procedure can potentially be lifesaving, albeit expensive because of the tediousness and intricacy of the surgery. We never hope to get here, so we advise keep an eye on your pets chewing habits and take precautions now before they undergo an exploratory surgery! 👍🏽

Here is an x-ray of a pet who ate a ring and other things we’ve found from exploratory surgeries and the last is a photo of Dr. Lynch in the middle of an exploratory! 👨‍⚕️🔎

PSA to our fur baby owners!

⚠️‼️CAUTION‼️⚠️

Swipe right to see how it looked inside her mouth (she is under sedation, intubated and has a heart rate monitor attached to her tongue)

This case is a perfect example for why you should NOT give bones to your pets. Not only can the shards possibly cause internal damage but the larger pieces like this one can get stuck in the throat or even the mouth.

This baby had this bone lodged between her upper molars and couldn’t get it out. She came in as an emergency because she could not close her mouth and was having difficulty breathing.

We managed to remove the bone under sedation and she was lucky enough not to have any damage. 😊
