Sometimes you've got to get creative, but when we poison the food chain we inherit the full time job of natural predators, and end up with more pests long term. It's a great way to learn more about our local ecology first hand and can be fun to take a little time to deepen our understanding vs an "instant fix" with a flashy label.

**Update for anyone curious about our upcoming Tie Dye workshop, we decided to wait until we finish rennovations to a new and improved workspace near the "Cactus Bunker" and native plant section. We recently set up a new shade structure, and have some rearranging that will create a space that works great for future craft and propagation classes. It's been an exciting project to work on! We will update with details and an official date TBA soon!

We are excited for our autumn American Elderberry harvest. We have enough to share and offer pick your own Elderberries when they are ripe and ready!

We also have a garden propagated nursery crop in 5 gallon pots that are well established and adapted to our local ecotype for sale. They make an excellent privacy screen, understory replacement in leui of invasive Bush Honeysuckle, rain garden plant, help with erosion control on slopes, and are perfect for ditches that are too steep to mow.

Sambucus canadensis is an amazing native plant for wildlife and pollinators. It hosts up to 37 species of butterflies and moths, attracts hummingbirds, native bees, and feeds up to 45 different species of songbirds. A wide variety of mammals also eat their fruit, and it is part of a special diet for Eastern Box Turtles! 🐢 The box turtles also help disperse their seeds along woodland edges, ponds, creek banks, and fields.

They are an indigenous edible and medicinal berry used as a natural dye and in many delicious recipes for jams, syrup, pies, wine, and tinctures. *Important note that only the flowers and ripe berries are safe for consumption and the rest of the plant's roots, leaves, and stems should not be eaten.

Still a work in progress with more straight native species to add. But here's a good look at our summer native plant selection! We've got some beautiful monsters of the prairie ready to get in the ground, and are already trying to root through the barrier where they're sitting.

Kansas Plant Farm midsummer native plant crops. June 2024'

06/28/2024

Midday can get pretty hot and muggy this part of midsummer, but it is the prettiest time of year to walk around the farm. It's jungle season here. We have unusual hardy and patio tropicals, well adapted garden favorites, and a sea of prairie natives that are massively established and can be planted all summer long. We also have a fresh batch of tie dyes to blend in with all of this flower power!

We are having a short plant sale tomorrow Sat, 6/29 from 9-12! Come check out the luxuriant rainbow all around. It's even better than a fireworks show, and wildlife friendly too!

No filter used while taking photos of this poppymallow (Callirhoe involucrata) during the hottest hours late afternoon today. It's non plussed with the heat index and currently spilling out from the berm onto the gravel driveway.

It's the perfect wildflower ground cover for verdant green spaces with tough conditions like hot strips along a driveway, country berms, cascading over hot retaining walls, and even tolerates shade! They are smaller with bright pockets of flowers the deeper the shade becomes, and add bright fuschia where color is hard to come by. They do great when planted in full sun with other wildflowers as tenacious as they are. In smaller sunny beds they require seasonal thinning out and trimming to keep them from overtaking smaller plantings.

Poppymallow is also a host plant for Gray Hairstreak and Painted Lady butterfly caterpillars. 🐛💐🦋
