Winter dormancy is prime timing to create a forest floor effect by adding an inch or two of fresh compost covered by organic leafy materials, and spreading what's left of any old mulch back over the top.

This adds nitrogen to support the breakdown of woody carbon rich materials without extracting nitrogen from your garden soil to breakdown.

It also helps turn organic matter into humus and boost microbial life, the real magicians in awesome soil. The longer this process repeats the more soil texture can go from low nutrient or heavy clay to a rich loam, better than any top soil you can buy. Like fermenting a fine wine or cheese! 🀌

Traditional fall leaf cleanups can be hard to give up completely in smaller spaces or when you have a tidal wave of leaves that are slow to break down from old Oak trees especially.

β€’One tip to find a happy medium when you can't leave them all, is to add a thick layer of mulch in beds farther away from walkways or create hidden compost piles inside forested areas of a property.

β€’If you don't have large shrubs or wild pockets to tuck them away for winter, you can also use inexpensive fencing or chicken wire to create a temporary bed edge to hold them in and keep things tidy.

β€’Most leaves (with the exception of Walnut and Buckye) add amazing insulation for your plants, rich fertilizer teeming with native microbial life, and habitat for creatures like butterflies, fireflies, native bees, frogs, turtles, and so many more species! Unfortunately a lot are becoming sorely missed and displaced. But it's incredible how much we can turn that around with a little kindness one yard at a time, and it's free garden magic that's better than anything you can buy! Leafy excess can be cleaned up without harming wildlife when temps get above 50Β° in spring πŸπŸ‚πŸπŸ¦‹πŸͺ±βœ¨πŸ¦ŽπŸΎοΈπŸ’
