Winter dormancy is prime timing to create a forest floor effect by adding an inch or two of fresh compost covered by organic leafy materials, and spreading what's left of any old mulch back over the top.

This adds nitrogen to support the breakdown of woody carbon rich materials without extracting nitrogen from your garden soil to breakdown.

It also helps turn organic matter into humus and boost microbial life, the real magicians in awesome soil. The longer this process repeats the more soil texture can go from low nutrient or heavy clay to a rich loam, better than any top soil you can buy. Like fermenting a fine wine or cheese! 🤌
