Today we are bagging and tagging in preparation for Holiday Open Barn in November. Adding the dried flower ‘bows’ to the smudge sticks is one of my favorite jobs.

1879! Amazing craftsmanship!

Did you know that The Lawrence Dam was built in 1879 too? Consolidated Barbwire Company, which is now Abe and Jakes Landing, which is located next to the dam, was built in 1893.

They don’t make them like they used to!

Perfect weather for rust dyeing. Buffaloes and sunflowers are only taking a few hours to complete. Over the next few days, I will do the finishing touches with some paint and fabric dye. Holiday Open Barn is only three months away!!

We are beet loving people. Pickled beets are served on our table almost every evening meal. I have canned all that I am going to can, and still have some fresh beets to share. When you come to pick-up a melon, if you love beets, I would like to share some with you! 🤗🤗

We are harvesting all of the beets in anticipation of planting the fall garden. Looks like there will be 6 to 8 bushel.
For sale at a very reasonable price per pound, and if you want to buy some for canning, I can hook you up. Send me a PM.

Sorted a few large calves this morning that needed some attention. The guys watch carefully for eye issues and an occasional wart. Of course Beau has to supervise all.

Summer weddings outside…timing is everything!! Plan early evening so dinner is served just as the sun goes down, which in June is around 8:30. If the ceremony is at 7:30 that allows an hour between, to take pictures when the lighting is just perfect. ❤️❤️

We think we might be seeing a trend 🤔.
Just had another tour for a spring wedding in 2025, that won’t be serving alcohol.
The Italian soda bar or Mocktail bar is becoming very popular. These young couples are health-conscious and budget-wise. ❤️❤️❤️

So easy to set up a mix and match soda bar for a party!

Maintenance on a three story barn can be complicated. Scraping and painting the windows and the Cupolas requires a cherry picker and a lot of work hours. Zach hit the ground running and wasted no time. Will keep you posted on progress.

Built in 1879, the barn is considered a ‘banked barn’, meaning it was ‘banked’ into the hillside, so there is one floor below ground that opens up to the west side.

Progress!!

Early morning hours of 5/11/2024 and 5/12/2024

Last handful

Done sorting and doctoring. Now all will find their summer vacation spot on grass in the hills with a few dozen hanging around the home place. Bo knows when the work is done. Lol

Sorting cattle

The key is to keep the cattle calm. The worst thing that could happen during the sorting process is that the cattle get riled up and attempt to jump over or go through the fence ..or go straight through the cowboy! Calm is the key. While taking pictures, I have to stay out of the view of the cattle, so as to not startle or frighten.

Hear how Charlie taps his stick on the fence, just enough to keep them moving and draw a little attention but not too much as to scare them. Cattle whispering. 🐮

Sorting calves/steers this morning. It is a tedious process and the guys have been at it for the past couple of hours. They sort on size, weight and height and even color. They are always on the look out for anything that needs treatment, like a ‘bad eye’. When we finish up (which could be hours) the first load will be headed west to grass in the Flint Hills .

Historic Taylor Barn is unique limestone barn built in 1879 by Eben Baldwin and German masons that once held stalls for 30 head of horse and a capacity of 80 tons of hay. The farm has been owned by the Taylor family since 1947 and is currently a working farm owned by Debi & Charles Taylor.
