🍄🍄🍄Mushroom Alert for Kansas Pet Owners!

The recent rains have brought a boom in mushroom growth, especially a toxic variety that’s popping up all over Kansas lawns: Chlorophyllum molybdites, also known as the False Parasol.

🍄 These mushrooms look harmless—even edible, but they’re toxic to dogs (and humans too!).
They often grow in clusters in grassy areas and have white caps with scaly patches. If you’re seeing a lot of white mushrooms in your yard right now, it’s time to do a sweep.

🚫 Dogs that nibble or chew these can suffer vomiting, diarrhea, and serious gastrointestinal upset.

🔍 What you can do:
✔ Check your yard daily, especially after rain
✔ Remove mushrooms promptly (use gloves!)
✔ Supervise outdoor time if your dog is prone to grazing

If your dog ingests a mushroom, don’t wait, contact your vet or poison control immediately.

📣 Stop the Problem Before It Starts: What Is Antecedent Arrangement?

Antecedent arrangement is a simple but powerful strategy:
Change the environment so the behavior is less likely to happen in the first place.

Think about it:

✅ A 5-year-old keeps sneaking candy from the coffee table?
You move the jar to a high cabinet.

✅ A toddler runs outside when the door opens?
You install a child lock or baby gate.

Now apply that to your dog:🐾

If your dog rushes the door when guests arrive, don’t wait to correct them—set them up for success instead:
• Use a baby gate or leash
• Provide enrichment like a snuffle mat or frozen Kong
• Ask guests to text instead of knocking

👉 Antecedent arrangement doesn’t “fix” behavior on its own, but it creates the conditions where training can succeed. It’s often the first step, so we can start reinforcing what we do want instead of always reacting to what we don’t.

Set them up. Support their success. Then reward the behavior you want to see more of.
