An amazing weekend getaway sharing birds with family and friends - a life bird for a few and a deepening connection to the natural world for all.

A black-throated blue warbler was just what the doctor prescribed as the midnight blue and white tumbler seized the spotlight flitting about the cluster of grapes trained on the tangle of branches all the while gleaning insects as we followed along.

Explore the outdoors with family and friends to create endless opportunities for adventure into the natural world. I hope the adventures planned outside will allow our paths to cross in the not too distant future.

The beautiful photographs captured on this day were taken by my good buddy James Hoffman.

Why should you clean out nest boxes?

It’s important to give nest boxes a really thorough cleaning after each nesting season. You need to get rid of any parasites before a new family of birds move in. The best time to clean a nesting box is in October and November when there is no chance of disturbing the previous occupants. Remove the old nesting materials.

Use warm soapy water and a brush to clean the inside of the box. Allow sufficient time for the nest box to dry before closing up the box. You can place a small handful of wood shavings in the box after it’s cleaned - nest boxes will get used for roosting during cold winter snaps by Chickadees and other songbirds.

During these hot summer days backyard birds need fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing. Most birds drink water every day. They also enjoy bathing to keep their feathers clean. A bird bath increases your chances of observing their behaviors close up and provides that cool sip or dip our feathered friends are in need of. Come in and take a look at a few of the bird baths in stock!

We are happy to have in stock our Dove and Quail bird seed blend which is made up of safflower, white proso millet and cracked corn - a favorite of California Quail.

The seed can be offered to these foraging feathered balls on a ground tray feeder that has legs and is raised up off the ground about 4-5 inches.

The raised height will allow sprinkler or rain water to pass through and keep seed dry as air flows about. The height will also afford the quail a lookout as predators may try and surprise the quail as they feed, Meeting the needs of these wary birds, however, can be rewarded with regular visits in the backyard.

Store hours will now include Wednesday!!
Thursday, Friday and Saturday each week:
10:00 am to 6:00pm.

In these high temperature days maintaining your hummingbird feeder is a must. You will need to wash the feeder out in hot water every three to four days. Use a bottle brush to scrub all surfaces then rinse well. Add fresh nectar and enjoy these aerial acrobats.

Nectar 4:1 water to sugar ratio
Boil the water to neutralize impurities that could be in the water. Add sugar to the hot water and stir to dissolve the sugar crystals. Refrigerate to cool. Once cool add nectar to the feeder.

The Black-headed Grosbeak
spends the spring and summer months in mixed woodlands and riverside trees throughout Utah. You might even spot them taking nectar and or jelly from hummingbird and oriole feeders. Black-oil sunflower seed in tube and mesh bird feeders is a great way to offer their preferred seed and have them visit the backyard daily. We have tube and mesh feeders in stock and black-oil sunflower seed to stock your feeders.

An honor to receive the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution
Conservation Award and Medal. I am grateful to everyone who has always been a part of my journey, from my family to friends and especially the memory of my father who took me by the hand as a young man and shared with me his passion for all that is wild

12/25/2018

Merry Christmas to the Wild About Birds Nature Center family - from me and one of my favorite little elves.

11/12/2018

I want to give a big welcome back to the nest to Ann Matthews. Ann has been out close to a year due to surgery and recovery but is doing much better and is excited to be back. The crew and I have missed her greatly - she is a much valued member of the WAB family.

11/05/2018

Had the opportunity to chase a few birds with my good friend Daniel Sachse this weekend and recharge the batteries in Southern Utah.

09/28/2018

Many thanks to Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Conservation Officers David Beveridge and Krystal Tucker and watchable wildlife enthusiast Dan A. for alerting me of an injured Barn Owl not too far from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Wildlife Education Center. With their assistance, I was able to transport the owl quickly up to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah and left the owl in the very capable and caring hands of DaLyn Marthaler.

Just a few minutes available in a busy schedule this afternoon and what to do?? Call Cameron Cox first to borrow a pair of binoculars since I was empty handed and second show me a Great Crested Flycatcher in Utah. Only the second recorded sighting in the state. Matthew Pendleton managed a great photograph of the shy Flycatcher snapping a dragonfly out of the air.

Early October of this year good friend, Phil Douglas will be retiring from an amazing career with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Thank you Phil for sharing unselfishly your knowledge and passion for wildlife and the great outdoors with Utah’s watchable wildlife enthusiasts , hunting communities and the Wild About Birds family over all these years!

My cup runs over with so much love shown from friends and family with birthday wishes. I started my day leading a trip with new friends and my feathered ones on the wetlands of Farmington Bay’s George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Wildlife Education Center. I ended my day enjoying cake and happy memories with family. Thanks to each of you for the birthday wishes. I look forward to the year ahead and getting out with many of you chasing the birds.

Thank you!

Thank you to all who came out to celebrate the opening of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Wildlife Education Center.
Many thanks to KSL Newsradio Tim Hughes, Russ Smith and Mike Navidomskis for spotlighting the Center and allowing the Center’s team to share our passion for wildlife with the community. I also want to thank Adam Eakle and Reece Stein for sharing their excitement for the Center and allowing us to do the same with their audience. The opening would not be complete without our feathered friends and the handlers of HawkWatch International (HWI) , Ogden Nature Center - Mary McKinley, Matt Klar, Adam D. King, Annette Gibert Hansen and Nikki Price Wayment. Lastly, thanks to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources employees and friends who came out over the many months to help ready the Center and share their talents. I look forward to the days ahead and sharing the resources of our great facility with all of you. I am fortunate to be a part of something so wonderful and am especially excited to share my love for the outdoors with our youth as my father did for me at an early age.

09/07/2018

Our final small mountain owl banding adventure of the season capped off an amazing and educational odyssey this summer. Many thanks to Markus Mika, Nikki Wayment and friends for coming out and sharing their knowledge and passion for wildlife. I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to share these experiences with so many and take in the knowledge that is shared with me so freely. I look forward to continuing our adventures in the years ahead with all of you and securing our wildlife’s place on our amazing planet.

07/22/2018

An amazing evening with Markus Mika, great friends and a family of Flammulated Owls in the mountains of Northern Utah. Many thanks to Markus Mika for taking the time to share his passion for the small mountain owl with our group. I believe on this trip a few of the younger folks were bitten hard by the nature bug and the future looks bright for all things wild. We have one last trip coming up shortly where we will be banding a family of Northern Saw-whet owls. Those interested private message me. I am excited to be seeing many new faces and sharing my love for the birds with all of you.

07/12/2018

I’m honored to announce that I have been selected as the new George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Wildlife Education Center Coordinator located at the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area. I am thrilled about the new partnership with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and look forward to sharing my passion for the outdoors and its wildlife with our community.

A gift of love given to me from my family. The original photograph revealed only the Rosy-Finches and myself lost in the frosted landscape. An artist drew my father into the piece - with loving hands on my shoulders like a guardian angel at my back reassuring me that I will be fine in the days ahead. Happy Father’s Day to all those special someone’s!

06/12/2018

I’ve had the opportunity to bird with many great folks over the years and I once again had the opportunity to venture out with an extraordinary lady - my mother. We spend quite a bit of time together, but birding is an activity we have seldom shared (my father was generally the one at my side). It was a treat to retrace a few of those birding paths once traveled and reminisce about past birding adventures with my father - how I/we miss him.

An amazing few days in the mountains of Northern Utah with friends Markus Mika - a leading authority of small mountain owls in the western U.S., Annette Gibert Hansen, Claire Sykes and James Hoffman. We had the opportunity to be up close and personal with Northern Saw-whet and Flammulated Owls. I am excited to have assisted Markus on his owl studies - much of his work provides data necessary for the long term survival and understanding of the small mountain owl species. I hope to include many of my Utah peeps on future adventures this summer in Utah's rocky hills!

05/30/2018

A few shots of the recent afternoon thunderstorms rolling past as we depart Deseret Ranch - the sweet smell of dampened sage drifting across the flats was ever so pleasant.

05/27/2018

An amazing day to be out with friends Daniel Sachse, Evan Buechley, Danielle Finlayson and Monte Neate-Clegg enjoying great birds and taking in the beautiful landscapes of the high Uintas and Deseret Ranch.

05/22/2018

The last Deseret Ranch Trip of the 2018 Great Salt Lake Bird Festival is the bookend for a number of amazing birding adventures. I am so happy to have made so many new friends and have had the opportunity to visit with old ones reminiscing of good times in the field. A few highlights of the trip - a Peregrine Falcon hunting the high mountain plateau ponds and snagging a Wilson’s Phalarope off the water’s surface for a lunchtime snack as our group watched on. Another gem on the adventure - a Long-eared owl capturing the hearts of the group as she laid atop her nest awaiting the hatching of her young. Thank you to John Bellmon for your friendship and sharing your knowledge with our group. Lastly many thanks to the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival family and our feathered friends for making these adventures so memorable!

05/20/2018

Another amazing field trip with old and new friends for the 2018 Great Salt Lake Bird Festival to East Canyon State Park! The morning started early for Greater-Sage Grouse viewing with George Archibald, Weston Lee Smith and the festival family. After a short visit with the grouse, we transitioned over to East Canyon Reservoir and the surrounding riparian habitat being entertained by a variety of Warbler and Sparrow species. The highlight of the trip was a behind the gate walk down to the East Canyon Dam where amazing landscapes awaited us and a Canyon Wren serenaded our descent to the spillway. Many thanks to East Canyon State Park Manager Chris Haramoto for allowing our group to have a memorable morning - we missed you today!
