For sheep and goat breeders...Now is the time to prepare for kidding and lambing season.

-Check eyelids and body condition on pregnant animals and deworm those that score poorly...Lots of rain this year; parasite burdens are higher than normal and will negatively affect dam health/fetal growth

-Make sure they always have access to a free choice balanced trace mineral supplement (and not plain white salt)

-Ideally, they should have a CD/T booster 1 month prior to kidding/lambing. This provides immunity via colostrum to newborns

-Save your best hay for their last trimester and early lactaction...their nutritional demands are much higher at that time

Please be careful with heat lamps! Many of our clients and friends have had barn fires over the years because of heat lamps.
-Use deep, dry bedding and a blanket instead of a heat lamp if possible
-Have lamb/kid blankets ready before birthing season
-Adults most likely don't need a heat lamp
-If you must use a heat lamp, hang it high enough so that animals can't chew or get tangled in it.
-Don't leave extension cords dangling in the stall

Hi Folks! With winter fast approaching, be sure your animals have appropriate shelter to remain comfortable with the weather that comes with. Sheds, trees, and fences serve to protect from strong winds. Sufficient bedding will keep animals dry and insulated from the cold ground, but beware: bedding soiled with waste can cause ammonia to build up and leave your animal more susceptible to respiratory infection. Keep bedding as dry and clean as possible, and be sure to have good ventilation to keep ammonia from building up.
