Hello All- We aren't great FB posters, but wanted to share a quick Public Service Announcement....The average hay quality is poor this winter, due to drought/stressful conditions during the growing season. We have already seen several starvation cases and true winter hasn't even begun. Here are a few recommendations for getting your animals through the winter in good condition. PS- the recommendations are even more urgent for pregnant animals or animals who are already unthrifty.
1. Use your hands to check body condition and ensure there is adequate muscle and fat covering the spine.
2. If you have a big herd, separate into groups according to Body Condition to reduce bullying/ competition at feeders.
3. Ensure that animals can get out of windy and wet conditions. Provide ample deep bedding, especially for thin animals.
4. Eliminate diseases that will increase their nutrient needs....worms, lice, foot rot, etc.
5. Ensure access to good quality vitamin and mineral supplement.
6. Ensure hay quality is good. Have forage tested if unsure of quality. Supplement with appropriate concentrates if needed.
7. If you need our help, call early! It is difficult to save animals that are already down.
