I wrote a version of the following, but chat gpt did it better so we’re going to go with that one!
A Climb That Changed Everything
Today, Panda and I had the privilege of honoring a moment in history that forever changed the lives of millions—the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act by President George H. W. Bush. And we celebrated in a way that truly mattered: by *climbing* the steps of the Utah State Capitol.
All 41 of them.
I wasn’t alone. My three companions couldn’t walk—so they crawled. Every step was a statement, every movement a memory of those who fought before us. Three-quarters of the way up, my legs gave out, and I joined them on the ground, crawling the rest of the way in solidarity and strength.
Thirty-five years ago, an eight-year-old girl made a similar” climb” up the steps of the U.S. Capitol. That crawl moved hearts and changed laws. Because of her courage, the ADA became a reality.
I thought of her today, and of my dear friend who is deaf. As a child, she was punished for using her hands to communicate. She didn’t learn sign language until adulthood—because shame had been sewn into her silence. Even today, she hides her native language in public. But today, I met a woman wearing a shirt that boldly declared, *"Disability is not a bad word."* And I believed her.
For those of us with invisible illnesses, it’s easy to mask our struggles. We smile, we push, we hide. But today I learned something that will stay with me forever: we don’t need to hide. We can *rise*, even when we have to crawl.
After the climb, I sat motionless inside the Capitol. My body refused to move. My mind had gone quiet. Panda curled up on my lap, grounding me. Strangers pointed, whispered, stared. And yet—I stayed. Because sometimes, just being visible is revolutionary.
I may pay for that climb with pain for days. But I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Because this journey isn’t just mine—it’s a torch lit by those before me, carried for those beside me, and passed to those yet to come.
We can change the world again… one brave crawl, one visible moment, one open heart at a time!
