Summer is here! ☀️ While you enjoy the sunny days, make sure your furry friend stays cool and safe. At Wild Acre Kennels, we care deeply about your pets and have put together essential tips to help you keep your dog comfortable during the hot summer months. 🌡️🐾

Always have fresh, cold water available for your dog.
Walk early morning or late evening to avoid hot pavement.
Provide shade and cooling mats during peak heat.
Keep sessions brief and during cooler parts of the day.
Supervise swimming and avoid overexertion.
Use fans, AC, frozen treats, and regular grooming to keep your dog cool.
Watch out for signs of overheating, like excessive panting or drooling, and take action immediately if noticed.

Let’s talk introduction to water for puppies and dogs

We always encourage a slow introduction to water when you bring your new puppy or dog home and here’s why:

1. Water is an unfamiliar surface for puppies and dogs which can be over stimulating.
2. When introducing your canine to water throw a short retrieve for them maybe a couple feet off shoreline, this ensures they can easily get back to shore. You want to make sure you aren’t introducing them to water with current in the beginning.
3. Practice dock and boat safety, do not leave your canine unattended on a boat or dock where they have a risk of falling in. This also goes hand and hand when on the beach, always keep a close eye on them.
4. Do not spray your puppy or dog with the hose if they are terrified of water thinking they will get use to it and love baths or the lake after.
5. We’ve all heard of people doing this but never understand why; tossing your dog out in the water and expecting them to swim. This creates a fight or flight mode which can traumatize your canine.

Some of these tips we know may seem silly, but 90% of the reason dogs are scared of water is because they are not properly introduced to water at a young age. #
