As we work through the winter storm this week and prepare for the extremely cold temperatures forecast into next week, please keep in mind the impact it has on cattle nutritional needs and management implications.

Included here are several excellent cold stress resources you may find helpful including the January Beef Tips and a recent discussion from Ag Today

Key Points to Consider/Remember:

Energy is the only nutritional component that increases with cold stress (1% for every degree below lower critical temp with a dry winter coat, 2% with a wet coat). Protein, vitamin, and mineral requirements do not increase.
The greatest impact will be on thinly conditioned cattle, and on cattle that have no or little wind protection or bedding.
Cattle must have sufficient access to water and it is best to provide feed and water in close proximity so a lack of water doesn’t decrease feed intake.
Putting out bedding helps provide insulation from snow and ice on the ground surface and is particularly important for cattle in pens or in areas with little forage covering the ground.
Refer to the KS Mesonet for current cattle comfort conditions and forecasts (https://mesonet.k-state.edu/agriculture/animal/).

Estimated lower critical temperatures (◦F) for beef cattle
Wet or summer coat, 59
Dry fall coat, 45
Dry winter coat, 32
Dry heavy winter coat, 18

Most importantly, please be safe and use good judgement.
