Valentine’s Day is all about love, but some holiday favorites can be dangerous for pets! Keep these hazards away from your furry family members:
🍫 Chocolate & Sweets – Toxic to dogs & cats, especially dark chocolate and xylitol (found in sugar-free treats).
🌷 Lilies & Roses – Lilies are deadly to cats, and thorny roses can cause injuries.
🍷 Alcohol & Caffeine – Even small amounts can be toxic.
🎁 Gift Wrap & Ribbons – Curious pets may chew or swallow them, leading to blockages.
💡 If your pet gets into trouble, our emergency team is here 24/7!

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, chocolate toxicity is a common emergency we see this time of year. While it may be a sweet treat for you, chocolate can be dangerous—even deadly—for pets. Signs of toxicity include:
🔹 Vomiting & diarrhea
🔹 Restlessness or hyperactivity
🔹 Rapid heart rate or abnormal rhythms
🔹 Tremors or seizures
The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is! Even small amounts can cause serious issues, especially in small dogs and cats. If your pet gets into chocolate, don’t wait—seek veterinary care immediately.
💙 We’re open 24/7/365 for chocolate-related emergencies and any other urgent care needs. If you’re unsure how much your pet ate or if treatment is needed, give us a call!

Heart disease isn’t just a human health concern—it affects 1 in 10 dogs and is also common in cats. Early detection is key, but heart conditions can be tricky to spot. Some signs to watch for include:
🔹 Persistent coughing or difficulty breathing
🔹 Fatigue or reluctance to exercise
🔹 Fainting or collapse
🔹 Weight loss or decreased appetite
While some of these signs develop gradually, others can be sudden and life-threatening. If your pet experiences a cardiac emergency, we’re open 24/7/365 to provide immediate care.
For non-urgent concerns, we recommend reaching out to your primary care veterinarian for an initial evaluation. If advanced cardiac diagnostics are needed, we’re proud to offer monthly consultations with a board-certified veterinary cardiologist right here at our hospital! 🩺💙
📞 For emergency care or to schedule with our cardiologist, call us at 512-817-3474.

Meet Asher: A Survivor and his Hero 🦌💙🐾

This is Asher, a sweet soul who joined his family just a few months ago through Austin Pets Alive! . From the moment he met his new family, including his best buddy and brother Romeo, it was clear he was meant to be part of their lives. But recently, Asher faced a life-threatening situation that could have had a very different outcome if it weren’t for the bravery of his furry brother, Romeo and the love of his humans💙

On a sunny afternoon, in what seemed like the safest place—a fenced backyard—Asher was attacked and continuously dragged by a buck during peak rut season. Tragically, wildlife encounters like these can be more common and dangerous during this time of year, as bucks are highly territorial and aggressive. Despite the unimaginable danger, Romeo didn’t hesitate to leap into action, following the buck, and defending Asher, which gave his family the chance to save him.

Thanks to Romeo's heroic actions, Asher's humans rushed him to our hospital. His injuries were severe, including multiple lacerations, a chest wound, and internal damage, which resulted in the loss of one of his kidneys. Our teams worked tirelessly to stabilize him and perform life-saving surgery. Through it all, Asher’s fighting spirit and sweet demeanor shone through (he was tail wagging and giving kisses the whole time!).

Today, Asher is back home with his family, recovered in the best way possible—with Romeo by his side. His family shared how much love and joy Asher has brought into their lives, calling him a “cuddler with the best personality.” They’re beyond grateful to Romeo for his courage, and to our team for the care and dedication that helped bring their fur baby home.

This story is a reminder of two things: the extraordinary bond between pets and their families, and the importance of being vigilant during rut season here in Texas. Bucks can show up in unexpected places, even in fenced yards, and their behavior can be unpredictable and aggressive! If you see wildlife, give them space and proceed with caution—your safety and your pets' safety depend on it.

We’re so honored to have played a role in Asher’s story & his recovery. Please join us in celebrating his strength, Romeo’s heroism, and the love of a family that never gave up. 💕💙

💔 OUR HEARTFELT TRIBUTE TO TIMBER 💔

Our team was honored to be part of Timber’s journey, even in the face of tragedy. Timber, an 11.5-year-old wolfdog ambassador rescued and cherished by our friends at Alveus Sanctuary, came to us in critical condition after showing signs of a life-threatening condition known as GDV (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus)—commonly referred to as "bloat." This is far more rare in wolf dogs/hybrids than it is in domesticated large breed & deep chested canine breeds.

What is GDV?
GDV is often considered the “Mother of all Emergencies” in the veterinary field. It occurs when the stomach fills with gas and twists on itself, cutting off blood flow to vital organs. Without immediate intervention, GDV is fatal. Despite the rarity of this condition in wolfdogs, Timber’s age and size made him vulnerable.

Our emergency and critical care team worked tirelessly through the night, performing emergency surgery, administering plasma transfusions, and providing the best critical care in hopes of saving this amazing boy. Unfortunately, Timber’s aging body faced insurmountable challenges during recovery. With hearts full of sorrow, the sanctuary and our team made the difficult but compassionate decision to let Timber rest, free from pain.

Timber’s Legacy Lives On:
Timber’s story is one of resilience, love, and the power of second chances. Though his time with the sanctuary was brief, it was filled with the care and the dignity he so deserved. His passing is a reminder of the incredible work Alveus Sanctuary does for animals who otherwise might not have a voice.

Supporting the Sanctuary:
Alveus is a local treasure, providing refuge and hope to animals like Timber. In his memory, we encourage you to learn more about their mission and consider supporting their efforts. Together, we can ensure that Timber’s legacy continues to inspire and save lives.
https://www.alveussanctuary.org/

A Note on GDV for Pet Parents:
For dog owners, especially those with large or deep-chested breeds, knowing the signs of GDV can save lives. Look for:
⚠️ Non-productive retching or vomiting
⚠️ A distended abdomen
⚠️ Restlessness or discomfort
⚠️ Rapid breathing or collapse

GDV requires immediate veterinary care. If you ever suspect your dog may be experiencing bloat, seek emergency treatment without delay.

To Timber the gentle giant who left pawprints on so many hearts: you will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Rest in peace, sweet boy. 💙

New Year’s Eve Firework Safety Tips From the EC :

As we ring in the New Year, it's important to keep our furry companions safe and calm during firework celebrations. Here are some essential tips to help your pets navigate this noisy night:

1. Secure Your Home & Yard: Ensure all windows, doors and fences are closed tight to prevent your pets from escaping due to loud noises.

2. Create a Calm Environment: Set up a quiet room away from the noise, filled with your pet's favorite blankets and toys to help them feel safe.

3. Use Calming Aids: Consider calming treats, anxiety wraps, or pheromone diffusers to reduce your pet's stress levels during the festivities. ( if your pet is really scared, talk with your rDVM to have a plan moving forward).

4. Distract with Activities: Engage your pets with fun activities, like puzzle toys or interactive games, lick plates, etc. to keep their minds occupied and distracted from the noise outside.

5. Stay with Your Pets: If possible, spend New Year’s Eve at home with your pets. Your presence can offer them comfort and reassurance amidst the loud celebrations.

6. Microchip and ID Tags: Ensure your pets are microchipped up to date on registry. Be sure that they are wearing updated ID tags, just in case they get frightened and escape.

7. Know Their Stress Signals: Watch for signs of anxiety in your pets, such as hiding, shaking, or excessive barking, and respond with comfort and reassurance.

8. Plan for Emergencies: Familiarize yourself with our contact information and location in case your pet needs emergency care during the celebrations.

Your pet’s well-being is our priority! If you have any concerns as the New Year approaches or if your pet experiences any distress, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at Emergency Animal Hospital of Crystal Falls. We are always open and here for you 💙

Wishing you and your pets a safe and happy New Year!

🦃 Thanksgiving Tips for Pet Safety! 🐾

As we gather around the table this Thanksgiving, it's important to keep our furry family members safe and healthy. Here are some things to watch out for during the holiday week:

1. Food Hazards: Keep an eye on what your pets are eating! Foods like grapes, onions, garlic, and chocolate can be toxic to animals. Stick to pet-friendly treats!

2. Table Scraps: While it’s tempting to share, avoid giving your pets leftover turkey skin, bones, or rich gravies, ect. These can cause digestive issues or even more serious complications like vomiting, diarrhea and pancreatitis.

3. Decorations: Watch out for holiday decorations! Tinsel, candles, and certain plants (like poinsettias) can be hazardous if chewed or ingested.

4. Stressful Environments: With guests coming and going, pets may feel anxious. Create a quiet space where they can retreat and feel safe if they need a break from the festivities.

5. Travel Safety: If you're traveling with your pet, ensure they're secure in a crate or seatbelt. Never leave them in a parked car!

6. Emergency Contacts: Always have the number of your emergency animal hospital handy, just in case: (512) 817-3474

We hope you have a joyful and safe Thanksgiving with your loved ones, both two-legged and four! If you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s health this holiday season, don’t hesitate to reach out! 🐶❤️🐱

"I can’t thank EAH enough for the service and care they provided us and our pup during a very difficult 4 days. The front desk, client liaisons, techs, and Drs gladly answered every single question we had with patience and care. We were updated and called by a Dr 2x every day with a status of how our puppy was doing and were always reminded to call the hospital if we wanted updates at any time. Thank you to all the staff at EAH. You truly made a difficult time just a little bit easier."
