🐾🐾 PREVENTION IS KEY! 🐾🐾
What can we do to prevent upper respiratory illnesses in our dogs?
1. Be up-to-date on your Bordetella vaccination. While there are some strains it doesn’t guard against, it is a prevention to Kennel Cough.
2. Be up-to-date on your Canine Flu vaccinations. Again, it doesn’t guard against all the strains. Personally, my seniors and super social dogs get the flu vaccine annually. This year, all of my dogs have received it.
3. We have UV-C light sanitization units installed in both HVAC units. It guards against 99% of bacteria passing through the air ducts.
4. We have WEN Air Filtration Systems in both buildings. They are a double filter unit that eliminates 99% of airborne particles.
5. We clean with Top Performance 256 which kills over 50 viruses and pathogens including bordetella and canine influenza.
6. We have an isolation room available if a dog begins to present respiratory symptoms. If your dog begins to show signs, you will be called immediately. Prompt veterinarian care is essential, and transportation to your veterinarian (or a local vet if your veterinarian isn’t available) will be provided.
7. Community water bowls have been removed from play yards for the time being.
8. All dogs are screened for symptoms upon arrival as well as daily throughout their stay. With a cough, Kennel Cough (Bordetella) is a harsh, hacking type of cough. The mystery illness that has a tendency of turning into pneumonia appears to be a more juicy, productive cough.
9. Reduce the interactions your dog has for 14 days prior to boarding in uncontrolled environments, like community dog parks or other facilities that do not provide UV-C air sanitation.
10. I am in communication with several veterinarians in the area. They are all reporting that while there is an increase in respiratory illnesses, it currently isn’t any different than prior fall and winter months.
