Today's training session with Star included practicing farrier stuff like holding her hoof between my leg and using the rasp, trailer loading, and jumping around doing jumping jacks and other weird stuff (not included in the video 🤣) to desensitize her.

Star has been doing great! Today she walked over to the arena, my sister and dad picked up her hooves, I practiced some farrier positions with her, and we played with the tarp. 🤩

I'm on break after my first semester of vet school and have my first training horse for the next two weeks.

Meet Star.

I'll be halter breaking her and getting her used to being handled.

Off to a great start tonight, leading around her pen and picking up both front hooves.

Dreamer didn't care about the tarp, plastic bag, or feed bags at all. He wasn't amused with the tarp over his head though. 😂

Stout was fine with the tarp and feed bags. A little nervous with the plastic bag, but figured out quickly it wasn't a big deal.

Stout has been doing phenomenal. My nephew rode him around the roundpen yesterday and did great, and today I rode him down the road to meet up with a friend to trail ride. He handled traffic great, we just need to build confidence on the trail.

Dreamer had his first ride yesterday. Handled everything very well and we made a couple laps around the roundpen to get him used to moving forward with a rider.

Excited to see how these two progress this month. 😍

Stout
Ride 3

I rode Stout last night and afterwards tied him with a bridle on. Chewed on the bit which is typical but otherwise didn't mind it.

Dreamer
Day 5

Introduced the saddle to Dreamer last night. He was so nervous about the saddle pad being put on, that he would shake and get ready to take off if needed. So I took a step back, grabbed my lunge whip, and threw the lash over him several times. Coming back to the pad he was much less nervous about it being put on. With the saddle he didn't mind and walked around with it. Hoping to get a roundpen set up again so I can begin riding him soon. Ended the night by loading up in the trailer several times and eating dinner in there.

Stout
Day 5
Rides: 1

My arena finally dried up from all the rain and I had about 30 minutes to get Stout's first ride done. He tied for about 20 minutes, saddled, and then did some lunging. I like to do the first couple rides in a halter and introduce the bit later when he's being tied.

He did very good for his first ride with me. Walked and trotted, stopped and backed. I think he'll be a super good horse with some consistent riding and exposure. 😍

New horse in for training. This is Dreamer (the sorrel) who's a maternal brother to my barrel horse Star. He's with me to be started undersaddle.

My other horse, Stout, has been doing good. I've been focusing on groundwork and putting the saddle on. So far he's doing very well and handling everything like its nothing.

I haven't had a training horse in a few weeks and the break has been nice! Now summer is approaching - and hopefully dryer weather - so my last training horses for the year are coming in.

This big guy came in today. His name is Stout, he's an older Quarter Horse. He's been off riding for a couple years so he's in to be tuned up for his owner. He's a super sweet horse, but has some ground manners to learn. That'll be the focus of this week before we start riding.

Tonight's session just consisted of me learning what groundwork he knows, and then tying afterwards for about 30 minutes.

Excited to get this one going again!
