February is Pet Dental Health Month!

Just like us, pets can also suffer from a broad range of oral problems. In fact, over 80% of dogs suffer from some kind of gum disease while around 70% of cats are affected by dental disease by the time they are three-years-old. So, knowing how to look after their teeth is an important part of keeping your fury friend healthy.

We check your pet’s teeth during their annual visit and if needed we preform dentals right here at Meadow Hill! Give us a call to schedule an appointment.

Happy Ginger Cat Appreciation Day!

Did you know…

-Ginger cats are typically male.
The gene that gives ginger cats their distinctive coat colour is on the X chromosome. Only female cats need two copies of this gene, only male cats need one.

-Freckles can appear on ginger cats
Lentigo, or tiny black freckles, can darken over the course of your cat's life but they don't appear to be related to sun exposure.

Today is National Specially-abled Pets Day!

Whether they're missing an eye or a leg, need daily medications like insulin or thyroid medication, or a wide variety of other quirks these animals hold a special place in our hearts.

In honor of today we would like to share 3 of our magnificent specially-abled hospital cats!

Chloe has been with us since August 2016 when she was seriously injured in an accident and became partially paralyzed. This doesn't stop her from zooming away the moment her front paws hit the floor (that is one of her back legs sticking forward).

Bugs came to us in November 2022 as a tiny kitten fighting to stay alive. His eyes were in such bad condition it seemed like they would need to be removed. With fast action and lots of care, despite how they might look, this handsome fella can see pretty darn well.

Weeble can't help but wobble! For almost 12 years Weeble as greeted the staff with his purrs. Born with cerebellar hypoplasia, the part of the brain that coordinates movement didn't fully develop. Even though he falls over and walks funny he is living his best life blissfully unaware that he's an extra special cat.

April is Heartworm Awareness Month!

Heartworm disease in dogs and cats can result in severe lung disease, heart failure, and other organ damage, potentially leading to death if not treated at the right time. Mosqitos bite an infected animal and carry the baby worms, also known as microfilaria, to a susceptible pet by one simple bite. Once inside a new host, it takes approximately 6 months for the larvae to mature into adult heartworms. Once mature, heartworms can live for 5 to 7 years in dogs and up to 2 or 3 years in cats.
We offer many prevenatives to keep you pets safe: Heartgard, Interceptor, Simparica Trio, and Revolution Plus just to name a few. When was the last time your pet was checked for heartworm?

March 19-25 is National Pet Poison Prevention Week!

There are many items we humans use daily that can be extremely dangerous to our beloved pets. From chocolate and grapes to lilies and Advil, we as pet owners need to be vigilante about what is dangerous and accessible.

The sooner you get professional help, the easier, cheaper and safer it will be to treat the poisoning. If we are unavailable, call the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 or Safety Call International’s Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661. A credentialed veterinary professional will guide you.
