For our old school Lebanon residents…Dr Z found this gem while cleaning out our basement. It’s Dr. Baldwin’s handwritten directions to local farms and houses that he would visit!!! He started the practice in the basement. He visited many farms back then and I’m guessing these notes were middle of the night scribbles on his way to a call! Such a cool find!

It’s time once again for Thank You Thursday! Each week we’re stopping to give a special feature to the wonderful people and local businesses that are working together with us on our brand new (soon to be opened!) Wellness Center.

Today, we want to give an extra special thank-you to Wentworth Civil Engineers! Wes Wentworth is one of our local Lebanon neighbors, and he’s been handling the complicated matter of the engineering around our new building. That includes things like figuring out the best ways to preserve and protecting the surrounding farmlands, ensuring runoff is handled correctly, rain gardens, planning out the parking lots – and a lot more. They’re not always things that you’d consider when you first decide to do construction, but they’re incredibly important for respecting our surrounding area, and we greatly appreciate Wes’s expert guidance! Thank you very much for your hard work, Wentworth Civil Engineers! http://www.wentworthcivil.com/

: Be Prepared with a Go-Bag! 🐾🎒

Do you have a plan to keep your pets safe in the event of a flood, hurricane, or other natural disaster? They can strike without warning, so it’s crucial to be prepared for your entire family—including your pets! Having a pet go-bag ready ensures you can quickly and safely evacuate with everything your furry friend needs.

Here’s what to pack:
•Food & Water: 3-7 days' worth of food (dry bagged, or cans) and bottled water, with bowls.
•Medications: Any necessary medications and a first aid kit (including gauze, tweezers, and bandage wrap)
•Identification: Bring an extra collar with an ID tag, a slip leash, microchip information, and a recent photo. If your pet has medical problems, bring a copy of their records.
•Security Items: A blanket, a leash/harness, and a carrier for small dogs and cats.
•Sanitation Supplies: Waste bags, litter, and a small litter box for cats.

Being prepared can make all the difference in an emergency. Stay safe and ensure your pets are ready for any situation! 🐶🐱

It’s Thank-You Thursday again! We’re taking each week to give a special shout-out to the many amazing people and local businesses that are all working together with us to make our brand new Wellness Center.
Today we’re giving a huge thank you to Bonner Electric! When you’re starting with a 200-year old house as a base, it’s important to make sure that all of the panels and wiring are updated and safe, as well as putting in the framework for more access and capabilities. Bonner Electric has done a great and thorough job tackling this challenge and making sure that our new Wellness Center will be fully capable of handling our computers and medical equipment that we use every day to help provide state-of-the-art patient care. 🐾 Toe Beans Appreciation Post! 🐾
Let’s take a moment to appreciate one of the cutest features on our furry friends: their toe beans! Whether it's a pup’s paws or a kitty’s pads, those tiny, squishy, colorful little toes are just too adorable! 😍
Fun Facts:
• Cushioning: Toe beans aren’t just cute; they help cushion their steps and reduce noise when sneaking around. Perfect for stealthy midnight adventures!
• Temperature Control: Did you know that cats and dogs sweat through their toe beans? It helps them cool down on a hot day!
• All About Texture: Those soft pads are packed with nerves, giving your pet an extra-sensitive sense of touch. It's why they’re so good at navigating different terrains.
Share a pic of your fur baby's toe beans in the comments – we’d love to see those precious paws! 🐾❤️

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR DOGS TRAVELING TO THE U.S.

The CDC has new rules for all dogs that are entering the US, including those coming over from Canada and other “low-risk” countries. These new rules go into effect on AUGUST 1ST, 2024. Going forward, all dogs coming into the US – even if they live in the US and are returning home – must now meet the following requirements, regardless of if they are coming from a “low risk” or “high risk” country:

• Must be 6 months of age or older
• Must be microchipped
• Must have a completed CDC Dog Import Form

Dogs coming from high-risk countries have additional forms and vaccinations that must be completed in addition to the above requirements.

For more information or any questions, please see the CDC’s website: https://www.cdc.gov/importation/dogs/

Why is this important to know? These new rules are much more detailed than the previous rules, and many people who have travels planned with their dogs are unaware of the upcoming changes. The new rules apply to all dogs, including service dogs. If you regularly take your dog with you to Canada, or if you have a trip coming up, please visit the CDC link above and contact your veterinarian to ensure that you’re fully prepared! Rabies risk is taken very seriously, and dogs who fail to meet the new requirements may be barred entry to the US.

Question to crafty friends- we are searching for Rainbow bridge blankets for our friends who spend their last day here. We want to ensure our animal friends are covered in care before their final goodbyes. Any suggestions on where to find or someone who could make them for us?
As we plan and start to build our Gazebo for goodbyes out back, we are trying to think through each detail. The gazebo will be a large area that families can gather and be with their pet one last time.❤️ Suggestions welcome!!

We are so fortunate to have this in CT!! Way to go Pieper!!!

When your pet has an emergency, they deserve only the best care – and that’s why we’re proud to inform you that our Pieper Memorial ER & Specialty has been certified as a Level I facility by the Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Society since 2021!

Less than 20 hospitals throughout the US, UK, and Canada have achieved VECCS Level I certification, and Pieper Veterinary is proud to be among these prestigious few! A ranking of VECCS Level I is the highest certification that a veterinary ER can achieve and represents true excellence, with strict requirements for medical expertise and ability, staffing, facilities, equipment, education, and more - it's a testament to the amazing people that work here and their compassion and dedication for helping animals in need.

Pieper Memorial has provided emergency and specialty referral services to pets throughout the northeast, and as a teaching hospital we’ve helped share experience and education to veterinary interns, residents, and technicians for over a decade. We’re incredibly proud of the amazing people in our team for their hard work and passion for providing our pets with the very best care.

06/27/2024

One week from today is the 4th of July – are you and your pet prepared for fireworks? 🎆 Around 50% of all dogs and cats find loud noises like fireworks frightening, and will show their stress with behaviors such as hiding, pacing, howling, and trembling. More pets go missing on the 4th of July and New Year’s than any other times of the year! Make sure that your pets are securely contained and have a quiet space to retreat to – and if your pet requires anti-anxiety medications, please check and make sure that you have them NOW! It takes a few days to process a prescription refill, especially if your pet is overdue for an exam and needs to be seen by a doctor before medications can be dispensed. Save your pet (and yourself) the stress by making sure you’re ready to go in advance!

We're in for a hot week - please use caution when it comes to keeping your beloved pets safe!

Any dog or cat can get heatstroke, but if any of the following factors apply to your dog, they are at an increased risk of danger:
-Brachycephalic breeds (short-faced like pugs, bulldogs, Persian cats)
-Long, thick , or darkly-colored coat
-Overweight or obese
-Seniors and young puppies
-Large or giant breeds
-Pre-existing medical conditions (especially cardiac or respiratory problems)

Symptoms of heatstroke include rapid breathing (hyperventilation), red gums/tongue, excessive drooling, vomiting/diarrhea, tremors, loss of balance, and collapse. Pets with these signs should go to the closest ER immediately - heatstroke can be FATAL if not treated.

Please be careful this week - provide lots of shade and water, avoid exercise during the heat of the day, stay off hot asphalt, and most importantly DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG IN YOUR CAR!! Being informed and knowing the signs is the best way to keep your pets healthy. Stay safe!

We're wishing you all a very happy Memorial Day weekend! As a reminder, our hospital will be closed on Monday May 27th in observance of the holiday, and we will resume our regular hours on Tuesday the 28th.

In the event that your pet requires urgent or emergency medical attention, we recommend contacting Pieper Veterinary at either their 24hr Middletown ER at 860-347-8387, or their 7-Day Urgent Care in Madison at 203-245-8511.

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine!

Wow!!! 26! 18! Pets are living longer and longer!! Unfortunately- just like with people, health problems increase with age. Cancer, diabetes, kidney failure- the lost goes on. We are excited that the new Wellness Center will include geriatric care and a veterinary tech room. We plan to have time to address our older pets issues and time to help train pet families in their management!! We want to make their time here as good as it can be for as long as it can!!

05/19/2024

We’ve been talking about Leo lately- as he gets older, he needs more care. What age was/is your oldest pet? Not one that you heard of or saw online but a pet you actually had and knew the age? Please post cat or dog and the age! Please share!
