A winter toxin that many pet owners may not think about is hand warmers. According to Renee D Schmid DVM, DABVT Director, Veterinary Medicine, Pet Poison Helpline Senior Veterinary Toxicologist, hand warmers and similar single-use warming packets contain iron powder. The biggest risk is for an UNUSED product which contains a massive amount of elemental iron. Signs of elemental iron toxicosis can occur within 6 hours of exposure. Typical first signs noted are vomit and diarrhea (which can be bloody). Prompt treatment is very important. If you think or know your pet has ingested a handwarmer please contact us right away or if we closed, PETS in Lancaster is available 24/7 at 717-295-7387. For a fee you can also call the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661.

This little peanut came to visit us for her first puppy check up snuggled in her human’s pocket. Her name is Rita and she is a 9 week old chihuahua. She weighed in at a whopping 1.59 lbs! Rita was a very brave girl and didn’t even notice her vaccine because she was too interested in her treats!
