04/22/2024

Male cats can easily develop an obstruction of the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder and out of the body). Male cats are at greater risk for urethral obstruction than females because their urethra is longer and narrower. Obstructions are often the result of plugs of crystals or small stones. If you suspect your cat is suffering from this (symptoms below), contact your veterinarian immediately. Once the urethra becomes completely blocked, the kidneys are no longer able to remove toxins from the blood or maintain a balance of fluids and electrolytes in the body. Without treatment, these imbalances can lead to heart failure — often in less than 24 to 48 hours.

Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may include:

🐈 Straining to urinate with little to no amount
🐈 Frequent and/or prolonged attempts to urinate
🐈 Crying out while urinating
🐈 Excessive licking of the ge***al area
🐈 Urinating outside the litter box
🐈 Blood in the urine
🐈 Increasingly distressed

If you suspect your cat has an urethral obstruction, immediately contact Stoney Brook Veterinary Hospital at 603-448-4448.

Why do we recommend monthly heartworm prevention and yearly screenings?

Heartworms are spread to cats and dogs by mosquitos who are infected with baby heartworms (they’re the vector). As they bite your pet, the baby worms pass into your pet’s blood stream where they make their way to the heart and mature into adult worms that reproduce and cause a heavier burden. Infected dogs and cats who are then bitten, pass along baby worms to the mosquito and then to another dog/cat. Untreated heartworm infections often lead to cardiac arrest, liver failure, kidney failure, blood clots, and other life-threatening conditions. We follow the American Heartworm Association’s recommendation for annual testing. While treatment is possible for dogs, it is less effective in cats and therefore prevention is key!

You can learn more about the basics of heartworm disease and the signs in dogs, cats, and even ferrets here: https://www.heartwormsociety.org/pet-owner-resources/heartworm-basics

If your pet is due for their heartworm test or not currently on preventatives, contact Stoney Brook Veterinary Hospital at 603-448-4448 to schedule an appointment.

Happy Easter! Amongst all the fun, it’s important to remember there are potential health hazards awaiting your pet. Chocolate and some candies contain theobromine and xylitol which are toxic to pets. Artificial grass, candy wrappers, plastic eggs and decorations are a few items we see pets ingest which later can cause obstruction among other issues. Please be mindful this Easter and keep these items out of reach for your pets.

If your pet does ingest any of these or other toxic items, call either the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 or SAVES at 603-306-0007.

It is National Pet Poison Prevention Week!

Here are our top 3 tips:
1) Gain knowledge on the common items that can harm your pets. This is a great resource provided by the AAHA: https://www.aaha.org/your-pet/pet-owner-education/ask-aaha/Household-Toxins/

2) Now that you know what items in your household can harm your pet, pet proof your home and immediate surroundings. Throw these items away or ensure they are out of paws reach.

3) Sharing this valuable information with your friends and loved ones will also help keep their pets safe from possible dangers.

BONUS TIP! 🌟 Be prepared by saving our contact information along with the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 and SAVES at 603-306-0007 in case you experience a poison related emergency (or any emergency) with your pet.
