🐑🐐 Tuesday Tip: Managing Sheep & Goats in the Dry Phase

The dry phase is a critical period for setting up ewes and does for a successful next breeding season. Follow the RSG Production Phase Management Guide to optimize body condition and nutrition: https://reprospecialty.com/production-phase-management-guide/

✅ Target Body Condition Score (BCS): Aim for BCS 2.0-2.5 at dry-off to ensure adequate reserves without excess fat.
✅ Adjust Nutrition: Reduce high-energy feed to prevent over-conditioning but maintain quality protein and mineral balance.
✅ Monitor Health: Conduct parasite control, hoof trimming, and any needed vaccinations before the next breeding cycle.
✅ Transition Gradually: If coming off lactation, slowly reduce grain and high-protein feeds to help dry them off naturally.
✅ Provide Quality Forage: High-fiber roughage supports gut health and maintains digestive efficiency.

A well-managed dry phase leads to improved animal health as we work to rebuild the female from the stress of raising lambs/ kids RSG Nutrition

🐑🐐 Tuesday Tip from RSG! 🐐🐑

General Weaning Tips for Sheep & Goats

Weaning can be a stressful time for both young animals and their dams. Here are some key tips to ensure a smooth transition:

✅ Gradual Separation: If possible, wean in stages—out of sight but within hearing distance at first to reduce stress.

✅ Solid Nutrition: Ensure kids/lambs are eating solid feed well before weaning. High-quality hay and a balanced ration are key. We also recommend incorporating RSG Prime either into their water or sprayed onto their feed to help build up immunity.

✅ Clean, Stress-Free Environment: Minimize environmental stressors—provide clean water, proper ventilation, and reduce crowding. Spray RSG Gaudian down on bedding to help fight off any bad bacteria that could cause problems.

✅ Monitor Closely: Watch for signs of illness like coughing, scours, or poor appetite, especially in the first-week post-weaning.

✅ Vaccination & Deworming: Ensure proper health protocols are in place before weaning to reduce disease risks.

✅ Minimize Changes: Avoid additional stressors like transportation, new groups, or major diet changes during weaning.

🎯 RSG Tip: Healthy weaning sets the foundation for strong growth and performance. A little preparation goes a long way!
